New Xiaomi Health App will Measure Heart Rate with Camera

29th September 2020
"Xiaomi Health Heart Rate Detection can monitor Heart Rate with no additional hardware"

Today MIUI on Weibo announced that the Xiaomi Health app is upgraded to version 2.8.6 and added heart rate detection function, which is the first system-level heart rate detection in China. It is understood that Xiaomi Health’s heart rate detection without additional hardware, through the camera can measure the heart rate.

In terms of the principle, through the flash next to the camera as a continuous light source, the finger lightly pressed against the camera, you can get images of blood flow, and through image analysis, you can collect a stable pulse wave signal, to get the heart rate value.

According to the report, Xiaomi Health Heart Rate Detection can monitor Heart Rate with no additional hardware, will measure heart rate through the camera. It features as below:

Heart to Heart:  presents classified test reports according to different exercise states for more scientific heart rate evaluation.
Accurate and secure: Self-developed local AI heart rate recognition algorithm, accurate recognition, and protect your privacy at the same time.

Due to external factors such as temperature, skin color, arm shaking, there may be inaccurate test data or failure to generate results. Please take multiple measurements. The data is for reference only and is not a substitute for medical equipment.

In terms of supported models, except for the following models (Mi CC9e, Mi CC9Pro, Mi CC9 Meitu Custom Edition, Redmi 6A, Redmi 10X Pro), MIU12 models all support Xiaomi’s healthy heart rate detection function. The official said that the performance of the camera is different on different models. After testing, it is found that the unstable rate of the camera when collecting images will cause the result to deviate greatly from the true value. For better user experience, Xiaomi closed the heart rate test entrance on the above five models. Xiaomi will still find solutions and solve the problem as soon as possible.

Garmin adds pregnancy tracking to Connect app

10th November 2020
"It’s a long-requested smartwatch feature"

Garmin is adding pregnancy tracking to its smartwatches and Connect app. The feature will let users track pregnancy-related symptoms like fatigue and monitor their progress toward their due date. It will also let them pause updates on their training status, which typically uses metrics like the amount someone exercises to classify their fitness level and progress.

The feature will also let users adjust heart rate alerts (heart rate can increase during pregnancy) and change hydration goals. An additional app will let users monitor contractions during labor.

Pregnant users have criticized smartwatch and wearable companies in the past for not including pregnancy modes on the devices. Apple Watches would continue to nudge people to close their Activity rings, for example, even if doctors told them to limit exercise. Swapna Krishna wrote about her frustrations with the alerts back in 2018 in Engadget. “I couldn’t tell the app, ‘Hey, this is actually what is healthy for me right now,’ and because of that it had become completely useless,” she said. “More than that, it’d become a constant source of anxiety, reminding me that I wanted to be more active than I was physically able to be.”

Posts on Fitbit’s feature suggestions board dating back to 2013 ask for the company to include a pregnancy setting. Both Apple and Fitbit users can (finally) track their menstrual cycles but still can’t note a pregnancy, which would skew the cycle tracking data. Withings has a pregnancy tracker that works with its smart scale, allowing users to monitor weight gain during the course of their pregnancy. “Helping people understand what’s natural, what you can do, and what you should talk to a doctor about is really important,Susie Felber, global content director of Withings, told Krishna in 2018.

The Garmin pregnancy feature will allow users to keep using their smartwatch during the course of their pregnancy. “It’s our hope that this pregnancy tracking feature helps women make sense of how their pregnancy ties into their active lifestyles and overall well-being,” Susan Lyman, Garmin vice president of global consumer marketing, said in a press release.

Fitbit adds Google Assistant support to Sense and Versa 3 smartwatches

21st October 2021
"Plus automatic SpO2 tracking at night, and new phonecall functionality"

Google Assistant support is coming to the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 thanks to a new update rolling out starting today in the US. Alongside it, Fitbit OS 5.1 also adds new blood oxygen monitoring features, support for audible replies from Alexa, and enhancements to the watches’ calling and messaging features.

Both smartwatches already support Amazon’s Alexa, but with the addition of Google Assistant Fitbit says they’re becoming the first smartwatches to offer a built-in choice between the two voice assistants. Support for Google Assistant has been on the cards since the company announced the smartwatches earlier this year. It’s unlikely that these will be the last Fitbit devices to support Google’s voice assistant, given the search giant is currently in the process of buying Fitbit. If you want to switch which voice assistant you use, Fitbit says you can do so from the companion app.

ALEXA IS ALSO GETTING SOME UPDATES

That doesn’t mean Fitbit is ignoring its Alexa functionality, however. Fitbit OS 5.1 also adds the ability for Alexa to audibly reply to your queries via the smartwatch’s speaker, rather than just displaying its responses onscreen.

The watches’ calling and messaging functionality is also being improved with the update. The Fitbit Versa 3 and Sense can now answer calls directly when a phone is nearby using their built-in speakers and microphones. Previously the watches could be used to accept or reject calls, but users still had to speak into the phone itself. Fitbit also says the watches will now support voice-to-text commands for responding to text messages on Android.

Finally, the watches’ SpO2 blood oxygen tracking is receiving some improvements, with Fitbit saying you’ll no longer need to use a special clock face to see blood oxygen data. However, if you’re someone that does want to get this information from a watch face, the company says it has new SpO2 clock faces coming to the watches by the end of the year.
