Let’s Encrypt renewed its partnership with IdenTrust for the next three years

23rd December 2020
"The Extended Partnership for 3 Years is said to Provide Safe Web Browsing on Android 7 or Older DeviceThe official website of Let's Encrypt shared the development."

Let's Encrypt, is an open certificate authority that gives digital certificates to websites to enable HTTPS. It recently has extended its Android compatibility for its certificates so that the older phones continue safe Web browsing. The Extended Partnership for 3 Years is said to Provide Safe Web Browsing on Android 7 or Older DeviceThe official website of Let's Encrypt shared the development.

The certificate authority said it was able to come up with a solution to allow for older Android phones to visit websites that use Let's Encrypt certificates for three more years. Originally, Let's Encrypt partnered with another certificate authority, IdenTrust, to allow its certificates to work on older platforms, but the IdenTrust root certificate that would offer that functionality was set to expire next year.

Let's Encrypt and IdenTrust partnered to provide support for older Android devices and were supposed to part ways next year. This could have caused HTTPS websites inaccessible for phones running on Android 7.1.1 or older.  But now as the partnership has been renewed, things will keep running smoothly on older Android devices for another three years. Let's Encrypt says on its website that some innovative thinking from the association and IdenTrust will allow the partnership to continue.

IdenTrust has agreed to cross-sign for Let's Encrypt's ISRG Root X1 certificate from its DST Root CA X3 certificate for the next three years. This allows Let's Encrypt's to provide its users “a chain that contains both ISRG Root X1 and DST Root CA X3, ensuring continuous service to all users and bypassing the potential damage we have been concerned about.”

Google wins EU approval to take over fitbit for $2.1 billion

18th December 2020
"Google wins fitbit deal after agreeing restrictions on how it will use customers’health related data"

Alphabet’s Google took over European Unions' antitrust approval for its $2.1 billion bid for Fitbit( a company that produces wearable fitness trackers and watches ) after the tech titan agreed to conditions including not using health data from European users for advertising.

When Google announced the acquisition in November 2019, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh said that the Fitbit purchase was “an opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market.” But regulators quickly got involved, and in August, they formally began investigating Google’s purchase of Fitbit over data privacy and antitrust concerns.

The deal had triggered criticism from privacy advocates on both sides of the Atlantic, consumer organizations, and Google rivals about the company’s market power and the use of people’s health data in targeted advertising.

Once Fitbit was a leader in the wearable devices market. But in recent years it has lost market share to Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung, and Huawei.

The European Commission said it had agreed on concessions with Google, valid for 10 years with the possibility of another 10-year extension, addressing competition concerns.

For the approval of the deal, Google has agreed to a number of concessions to ease EU concerns. Among the concessions, Google has agreed not to use Fitbit data, including GPS and health data, gathered from any user in the European Economic Area (EEA) for targeted advertising. Also, Google will store Fitbit user's data separately from Google's data used for advertising, and will not use data from Fitbit for GoogleAds. Users can store their health data either in their Google or Fitbit accounts.

The tech giant is said to maintain access to users’ health and fitness data to software applications through Fitbit Web API software, without charging for access.

Google says that it believes this deal will encourage the innovation of wearable devices and enable them to build products that will help people lead healthier lives.

Intel Evo mobile computing platform upgraded by Intel

22nd December 2020
"The latest upgrade to noticeably improve laptop power efficiency and lengthen battery life."

Recently, Intel launched its latest upgrade to its Intel Evo mobile computing platform. An AI-powered coprocessor by Intel is said to noticeably improve laptop power efficiency and lengthen battery life.

Intel calls the new chip, 'The Intel Visual Sensing Controller'. Also, the code Clover falls calls it "a secure companion chip that helps make PCs more smart and secure through the power of Intel artificial intelligence".

Initially, the chip is said to ship in commercial laptops as an enhancement to the Intel Evo mobility platform - which is a partnership between Intel and manufacturers to streamline a laptop's entire hardware platform, not just the CPU, to be more energy-efficient - and will presumably ship in consumer-market laptops sometime after that.

"The co-engineering effort involves Intel’s dedication to tackling unique product challenges together and taking the entirety of the system into consideration – all so we can deliver amazing new platform features to business users," said Dell Latitude and Mobility Products' vice president, Meghana Patwardhan.

This new chip senses the presence of a user in front of the screen and adjusts the screen brightness accordingly.

A laptop display definitely has one of the biggest appetites of any component of the machine, so reducing power to the screen by reducing brightness when you're not actually looking at it would be a huge battery saver.

Intel is said to add security in its new chip that points to security features like facial recognition and similar tasks that can be well in line with an AI coprocessor.
