Google committed to India's new IT rules, assures CEO Sundar Pichai
"As it has done with regulatory frameworks in several countries prior to India, Google CEO Sundar Pichai says the company is committed to complying with the new rules"
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has expressed his company's support for the Government of India's new regulatory frameworks. Pichai stated that the company is committed to following local laws and will work cooperatively with the government.
Pichai made the remarks during a virtual press conference with Asia Pacific reporters. Pichai stated at the conference, "It is obvious that we are in the early stages, and our local teams are very engaged... we always respect local laws in every country we operate in, and we work constructively. We have clear transparency reports, and we highlight when we comply with government requests in our transparency reports."
Pichai went on to highlight Google's similar efforts around the world to adapt to changing regulatory frameworks governing technology and its applications. He stated, "We fully expect governments to properly scrutinize and implement regulatory frameworks. We see it as a natural part of societies figuring out how to govern and adapt themselves in this technology-intensive world, whether in Europe with the copyright directive or in India with information regulation, for example."
Pichai also stressed the significance of a free and open internet. He stated that Google advocates for the same and works constructively with regulators all over the world to make this possible for its users.
The comments are in response to the GOI's new information technology rules for social media companies operating in India. The new laws, which go into effect on Wednesday, are intended to hold digital platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, and Google more accountable for the content hosted on their platforms.
New mandates have been enacted under IT laws to address this accountability. Among these are the appointments of a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person, and a resident grievance officer for each of the country's digital platforms. They also want to create a complaint redressal mechanism for these platforms, which would require them to have a physical contact address in the country. These businesses will also be required to submit a monthly compliance report detailing the complaints received and the actions taken, both in response to the complaints and proactively in response to any illicit content.
