Facebook becomes the largest buyer of renewable energy
"The company set a goal in 2018 to support its global operations through 100% clean energy by 2020. "
According to Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA) Facebook was the largest US-based corporate buyer of renewable energy in 2018 and 2019.
The company set a goal in 2018 to support its global operations through 100% clean energy by 2020.
On Thursday Facebook has said it had procured enough new renewable projects to meet 100% of energy needs for its global operation in 2020.
It was 75% of the way toward that goal in 2018, and it was up to 86% in 2019.
More tech giants like Google, AT&T, and Microsoft have focused on powering their data centers sustainably.
As of the end of 2020 Facebook has left Amazon, Google, Verizon, and McDonald's as the largest buyers of renewable energy.
Facebook has contracts in place for more than 6.1 GW of wind and solar across 18 states and five countries.
The social network company has invested $8 billion into green energy projects.
Among the energy contracted Facebook currently has 2 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of the wind online, along with 720 MW of energy storage.
To mark this event Facebook is launching volunteering sign-ups for environmental organizations on its social network.
Corporate interest in procuring renewables and storage is expected to continue expanding as more companies work toward their sustainability goals.
Facebook continues to work toward a net-zero emissions goal for its entire value chain in 2030.
