Samsung plans on moving gigantic amount of smartphone production to India

16th August 2020
"Samsung planning big move of smartphone production to India"

In reference to a new report from The Economic Times, Samsung is preparing to move a massive amount of its production line to India. As per the sources close to the matter, Samsung already disclosed plans to the Indian government under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) to produce phones worth over $40 billion (Rs 3 lakh crore) during the next five years in India. The majority of phones made in India with a price above $200 (Rs 15,000) will be exported.

The move will come at the expense of Vietnam, which is another hub in Samsung’s production efforts and is currently its second-largest exporter of smartphones behind China. Last year, Samsung closed off its last remaining factory in China. Prior to that, the Korean tech giant opened its largest smartphone factory in existence in Noida, India which will remain a leading production hub going forward.

Samsung’s 6G White Paper Lays Out the Company’s Vision for the Next Generation of Communications Technology

13th July 2020
"Samsung defines three categories of requirements that have to be met to realize 6G services – performance, architectural, and trustworthiness requirements."

Samsung’s vision for 6G is to bring the next hyper-connected experience to every corner of life. To accelerate research for 6G, Samsung Research, the advanced R&D hub within Samsung Electronics’ SET Business, founded its Advanced Communications Research Center in May of last year.

Samsung released a white paper entitled “The Next Hyper-Connected Experience for All.” outlining the company’s vision for the next generation communication system, namely 6G. The white paper covers various aspects related to 6G, including technical and societal megatrends, new services, requirements, candidate technologies, and an expected timeline of standardization.

Samsung 6G network research

In the white paper, Samsung expects that the completion of the 6G standard and its earliest commercialization date could be as early as 2028, while mass commercialization may occur around 2030. Both humans and machines will be the main users of 6G, and 6G will be characterized by the provision of advanced services such as truly immersive extended reality (XR), high-fidelity mobile hologram, and digital replica.

“While 5G commercialization is still in its initial stage, it’s never too early to start preparing for 6G because it typically takes around 10 years from the start of research to commercialization of a new generation of communications technology,” explained Sunghyun Choi, Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center. “We’ve already launched the research and development of 6G technologies by building upon the experience and ability we have accumulated from working on multiple generations of communications technology, including 5G. Going forward, we are committed to leading the standardization of 6G in collaboration with various stakeholders across industry, academia, and government fields.”

Samsung 6G network research

Whereas 5G requirements mainly focused on performance aspects, Samsung defines three categories of requirements that have to be met to realize 6G services – performance, architectural, and trustworthiness requirements. Examples of 6G performance requirements are a peak data rate of 1,000 Gbps (gigabits per second) and air latency less than 100 microseconds (μs), 50 times the peak data rate, and one-tenth the latency of 5G.

The white paper also introduces candidate technologies that could be essential to satisfy the requirements for 6G. These include the use of the terahertz (THz) frequency band, novel antenna technologies to enhance the coverage of high-frequency band signals, advanced duplex technologies, the evolution of network topology, spectrum sharing to increase the efficiency of frequency utilization and the use of AI in wireless communications.

The architectural requirements of 6G include resolving the issues arising from the limited computation capability of mobile devices as well as implementing AI right from the initial phase of technology development and enabling the flexible integration of new network entities. The trustworthiness requirement addresses the security and privacy issues arising from the widespread use of user data and AI technologies.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra launched in Nepal

5th August 2020
"Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra unveiled with upgraded screens"

Samsung Electronics hosted its first-ever Galaxy Unpacked virtual event live-streamed from Korea to introduce a new suite of power devices. Five devices were revealed during the event, in which it unveiled the Galaxy Note 20 series alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable phone, Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+ tablets, Galaxy Watch 3 smartwatch, and Galaxy Buds Live earbuds.

The 2020 generation brings improvements on all fronts, from software to hardware, to make the S Pen even better. The Galaxy Note20 Ultra is built on the S20 Ultra platform. It has the same screen, a 6.9” Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 1440p+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

The S Pen and the supporting Wacom layer on the screen have been updated to achieve 9 ms latency. Samsung says that at this point the experience is very much like writing on paper. Notes you take can be converted to Microsoft Office formats and synced with your other devices via Samsung Notes.

The rear camera still features the large 108 MP main sensor. It produces 12 MP photos with binning, records 8K videos at 24 fps with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio (this ratio is also available for 1080p at 120 fps videos) The Note20 Ultra still boasts a periscope lens with 5x optical magnification as opposed to 4x. There is now a 12MP sensor sitting behind it, replacing the 48MP sensor of the S20 Ultra.

The chipset divide remains, with a partial upgrade. Much of the world will get the Snapdragon 865+ chipset, which is 10% faster than the 865 found inside the S20 phones.

The Note20 duo is the first phone with special optimizations baked into their software. There will be over 100 Xbox titles available in mid-September with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The screen's 240 Hz touch sampling rate matches dedicated gaming phones.

This is a 1080p+ panel with the old Gorilla Glass 5 (even the Note10 used GG6). Those aren't the only downgrades compared to the Ultra either. The one that hurts the most is the refresh rate, a standard 60 Hz.
