Toyota has teased a brand new SUV that it is going to launch soon. According to the Japanese carmaker, this will be its first new-generation fully electric SUV based on the e-TNGA platform, a structure that will allow the development of electric cars and will also be modular.

Toyota took to Twitter on Monday to share some ideas about the brand new electric mid-size SUV. The carmaker shared a video of the sketch of the model. Issuing a statement on Monday, Toyota said that further details about the electric SUV will be announced in the coming months. Going by what can be seen, this upcoming electric SUV seems to have a size comparable to that of the RAV4 SUV.

“Toyota will shortly take the next step in the rollout of its forthcoming battery-electric portfolio by first previewing an all-new mid-sized SUV in the coming months. The versatility and flexibility of e-TNGA technology allow us to design and create vehicles that are not just battery-electric, but also exciting to drive and beautiful to look at," said Koji Toyoshima, Deputy Chief Officer, ZEV Factory, Toyota Motor Corporation.

Toyota said the upcoming SUV will be its first step in the release of a portfolio of battery-electric products.

Toyota claims that the new platform is both highly versatile and easily adaptable for a range of product types. The new platform e-TNGA can be used to manufacture front-, rear- or four-wheel drive cars with a wide range of battery and electric motor capacities to suit various vehicle types and usage profiles.

Toyota also revealed that it is developing its own in-house batteries. Making use of the know-how it has acquired after more than two decades of evolution of hybrid systems, Toyota is working towards reducing the weight, volume, and especially the cost of batteries, as well as increasing their life cycle.

For this, it collaborates with partners such as Panasonic. And it is developing new technologies such as solid-state batteries, which are smaller and lighter in structure and recharge faster than liquid-type batteries.

Toyota on Wednesday launched the Urban Cruiser SUV in the Indian market. The company has announced that the deliveries of the new SUV will start from mid-October.

The Urban Cruiser has been launched in three variants - Mid-Grade, High-Grade and Premium-Grade.

The Urban Cruiser SUV comes out as the second installment under the Toyota-Suzuki alliance in India after the Glanza which is a rebadged Maruti Baleno. The Urban Cruiser is a spin-off of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and sports the same exterior design and styling.

Its color palette comprises 6 monotone color options - Blue, Brown, White, Orange, Silver, and Grey, and three dual-tone colors - Blue/Black, Brown/Black, and Orange/White.

The Urban Cruiser gets a new bold and dynamic grille, LED projector headlamp, and LED fog lamps. It rolls on diamond-cut 16-inch alloy wheels which look premium and lend it a sporty appeal. Some of its other highlights include a smart play-cast touchscreen, dual-tone premium interiors, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control (standard across all variants), cruise control, and an electrochromic rear view mirror.

The Urban Cruiser also gets features such as torque assist, regenerative braking, and an idle start/stop system.

It runs on a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol powertrain with an advanced Li-on battery featuring ISG (integrated starter generator).The motor is capable of producing 104bhp and 138Nm of power figures and is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. Toyota Motor Corp and Suzuki Motor Corp (SMC) signed an agreement in 2018 for supplying hybrid and other vehicles to each other in the Indian market. Toyota had already sourced Baleno premium hatchback from Maruti Suzuki India, which is retailed as Glanza. 

The price of Toyota Urban Cruiser starts at Rs. 8.88 Lakh and goes up to Rs. 11.58 Lakh. 

The SUV will take on Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, and the Mahindra XUV300.
