Google Pixel 4a to release at affordable price

3rd August 2020
"Pixel 4a finally to be available."

Google has started selling a long-delayed budget smartphone boasting the same high-quality camera and several other features available in fancier Pixel models that cost hundreds of dollars more.

The Pixel 4a unveiled Monday will be available Aug. 20 after months of delay caused by supply problems triggered by the pandemic.

It will cost $349, a $50 discount from a cheap Pixel released last year. It’s also a major markdown from other higher-end models in the existing product line-up that start at $799. The next versions of Google’s top-of-the-line Pixel phones will be released sometime this fall, Google said, without revealing their price.

The budget-minded Pixel 4a is coming out four months after Apple released a discount iPhone, the SE, priced at $399. The low price helped spur iPhone sales at a time of soaring unemployment, as the economy plunged into a deep recession that is causing millions of households to curb their spending so they can pay rent and buy food.

It’s doubtful the Pixel 4a will reel in as many consumers as the iPhone SE, based on Google’s inability to make significant inroads as a device maker so far, despite generally positive reviews for the devices, especially their cameras.

Google so far has been selling fewer than 10 million Pixel phones a year since rolling out the product line in 2016, barely making a dent a market where more than 1 billion phones are shipped annually, according to IDC.

Google search getting new AI tools to decipher your terrible spelling

15th October 2020
"1 in 10 search queries on Google is misspelled"

Google detailed a host of new improvements at its “Search On” event that it will make to its foundational Google search service in the coming weeks and months. The changes are largely focused on using new AI and machine learning techniques to provide better search results for users. Chief among them: a new spell checking tool that Google promises will help identify even the most poorly spelled queries.

According to Prabhakar Raghavan, Google’s head of search, 15 percent of Google search queries each day are ones that Google has never seen before, meaning the company has to constantly work to improve its results.

Part of that is because of poorly spelled queries. According to Cathy Edwards, VP engineering at Google, 1 in 10 search queries on Google is misspelled. Google has long tried to help with its “did you mean” feature that suggests proper spellings. By the end of the month, it’ll be rolling out a massive update to that feature, which uses a new spelling algorithm powered by a neural net with 680 million parameters. It runs in under three milliseconds after each search, and the company promises it’ll offer even better suggestions for misspelled words.

Another new change: Google search can now index individual passages from webpages, instead of just the whole webpage. For example, if users search for the phrase “how can I determine if my house windows are UV glass,” the new algorithm can find a single paragraph on a DIY forum to find an answer. According to Edwards, when the algorithm starts to roll out next month, it’ll improve 7 percent of queries across all languages.

Google is also using AI to divide broader searches into subtopics to help provide better results (say, helping find home exercise equipment designed for smaller apartments versus just providing general workout gear information).

Lastly, the company is also starting to use computer vision and speech recognition to automatically tag and divide videos into parts, an automated version of the existing chapter tools it already provides. Cooking videos, for example, or sports games can be parsed and automatically divided into chapters (something Google already offers to creators to do by hand), which can then be surfaced in search. It’s a similar effort to the company’s existing work in surfacing specific podcast episodes in search, instead of just showing the general feed.

"Fitbit has finally revealed its new fitness tracker, after a flurry of leaks"

Fitbit has finally revealed its new fitness tracker, after a flurry of leaks. Fitbit Luxe is a new fitness tracker designed for fashionistas. In this article, we'll look at the Fitbit Luxe's specifications, features, estimated price, and availability in Nepal.

Fitbit Luxe Overview:

Design and Display

The Fitbit Luxe is made of stainless steel using a metal injection molding process, which is similar to how jewelry is made. Graphite, Platinum, and Soft Gold are the three color choices available. The last two have a high-quality mirror finish. The tracker comes with a silicone band, but you can easily replace it with something more appealing to you.

The tracker has an AMOLED panel that serves as the sole control system, which means there are no buttons. There are several different clock faces to choose from. Similarly, the monitor will change its brightness automatically.

Features

The Luxe facilitates 24/7 continuous heart rate tracking and SpO2 monitoring thanks to Fitbit's PurePulse technology. It will also tell you how many Active Zone Minutes (AZM), Cardio Fitness Score, Breathing Rate, and Heart Rate Variability you have. It can also monitor your sleep and give you a Sleep Score based on how well you sleep. The Fitbit Luxe also includes a variety of stress-reduction aids, such as breathing guides, meditations, yoga, and more.

Up to 20 different workout modes can be tracked with this fitness band. It also has automatic exercise detection, so you won't have to manually trigger them every time. The tracker can be used to track swimming since it is water-resistant to a depth of 50 meters.

The Luxe is said to have a battery life of up to five days on a single charge, according to Fitbit. A Special Edition of the Fitbit Luxe is available, which includes a stainless steel Parker Connection Bracelet, a Laguna Beach-based jewelry company.
