Petrol additives also referred to as gasoline supplements, are usually chemicals that are mixed in fuel as they appear to boost the motorcycle's performance over a certain amount of time. There are various types of fuel additives on the market that can be used for petrol, such as absolute engine cleaner, octane booster, and injector cleaner. You will find nearly all of these items at a lubricant supermarket, any of the petrol stations, or a shop for performance parts/accessories.

After repairing an engine, some of the workshops and service stations also sell fuel additives. They also say that the product would boost your two-fuel wheeler's efficiency and performance. Now the question is, are these fuel additives actually working and enhancing vehicle efficiency or mileage? The response, for the most part, is no, and here we will tell you why.

Many of the fuel additives available here are either the type of engine cleaner or the type of injector cleaner, actually used for cleaning purposes. The additive form of engine cleaner helps minimize deposits on the internal parts of the engine and clears the vehicle's fuel delivery chain. The kind of injector cleaner, on the other hand, is formulated for cleaning the clogged injectors to get them back into proper service. This leads to a smoother response, lower long-term maintenance costs, and decreased emissions from engines. They do not, however, have a direct impact on your vehicle's efficiency.

In addition, you must first ensure the type of fuel additive you are going to use, as some of the service stations supply all customers with injector cleaner type fuel additives. For all types of additives, the technician on duty advises everyone the same advantages and sells the injector cleaner style additive to the consumers who are persuaded. While some of them have a two-wheeler fuel supply with a form of the carburetor, there is no injector in the system. So, before investing in such goods, be patient.

In reality, octane booster-style additives are intended to increase efficiency by increasing the gas's octane content. However, like high-performance cars, they are normally made for use. 

Manufacturers recommend the use of high octane gasoline in certain high-performance bikes.  And we know that high octane fuel isn't readily available. So, for a high-performance fuel, you can use octane boosters to meet the appropriate value. However, long-term use of such products can have a detrimental effect on engine components, and if you can easily get high octane fuel, we will encourage you to avoid such products.

Of course, it might not be time for your family to purchase a new vehicle yet, or you may have just purchased a vehicle with great fuel mileage, but are looking to increase it just a little more. Here are a few tips for maximizing your fuel efficiency without investing anything extra.

 

Plan a trip and share a ride

You can combine all your trips to accomplish some task out of the home. Make a list and plan your ride of destinations for yourself or your family member that will be covered in one trip and save you from extra mile ride. Speed control

The fuel could be saved by shutting off the engine but people often don't shut the engine. When you are at a red light or if you pull off the road to make a call, turn off the engine. Restarting needs about the same amount of fuel as 30 seconds of idling, so it makes sense to shut off the engine when your stop lasts longer. Idling for one minute uses the same amount of gas as it takes to start your car in the first place, and it creates a lot more exhaust.

Park in shade/ cooler place

When you’re out in the warmer months, try to park your car in the shade i.e cooler place. Not only does this make your vehicle more comfortable, but it minimizes the evaporation of fuel in your tank from the heat and leaves you with more fuel to use while driving.

Keep your car light as much as possible

Minimize the weight of your vehicle and the unnecessary burden from vehicle storage. Clean out your vehicle and get rid of things in it that might be weighing you down. If you have roof storage, like a box which will increase the acceleration of your car while on the drive, therefore consider making room for those items in your vehicle or switching to a rear-mounted box to reduce drag caused by that extra stuff, With a cargo box on the back, your fuel efficiency is saved and so is your money!

Regular maintenance of your cars

Keeping your vehicle in best condition is also incredibly important. Your tires should be properly inflated and your alignment should be perfect at all times. Regular inspections of tire rotations and alignment checks are essential in maintaining good fuel economy. When your tires are properly inflated, the amount of drag that your engine has to work through is reduced. When it’s time for you to get new tires, ask for low rolling resistance tires to help your engine even more.

Some of the side hacks that might not drastically show the result but these things might be considered to increase the value of money you pay on your fuel is by buying fuel early in the morning during hot seasons because fuel is cooler and denser in the early morning. As the temperature rises during the day, the fuel expands, its density decreases, and you get less of it for the money you pay. You won’t increase your mileage from 20 to 70, but if you do these things then you’ll hopefully see an increase of a few more Kilometres per litre.

Fuel-injected motorcycles are quickly taking over carbureted ones, which ruled the roost until the beginning of the new millennium. Almost every premium motorcycle comes fitted with a FI system, as things stand today. Let’s find out the difference between a carburetor vs a fuel-injected motorcycle.

Carburetor

The most basic and until recently, the most prevalent fuel system used in two-wheelers, especially in Nepal, is the carburetor. To explain the basic working of a carburetor, think of it as a tube that feeds an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder from one end, with an air filter attached to another. Now, somewhere in the middle of this tube, the air passage area is restricted to increase the velocity of the air passing through. This little area or part of the carburetor system is known as the venturi. By increasing the velocity of the air through the narrow area, a low-pressure pocket is created, which in turn facilitates drawing fuel from a jet placed near the venturi through suction.

The fuel jet mounted near the venturi draws its fuel directly from the fuel tank through a float chamber, which is a small fuel reservoir, with a float valve that when it is completed, cuts the fuel supply and resumes when the jet draws fuel from it. Then the resulting mixture of air-fuel is supplied to the cylinder where combustion takes place.

This is a very simple description of how a carburetor functions, while modern carburetors are usually more complicated in nature, like constant velocity or CV carburetors. To control the air-fuel mixture, these carburetors make use of components such as a diaphragm, needle valve, and pilot jet.

Advantages of carburetor

• They cost less and are easy to manage.

• Carburetors allow the users to tune them to their requirements.

Disadvantages of carburetor

• Not efficient system.

• Old dated design.

• Air-fuel mixture fluctuates, affecting engine smoothness.

Fuel injection

A Fuel Injection system is composed of a complex series of electronics and sensors, unlike carburetors. The fuel is pulled from the tank in carbureted systems, while in a Fuel Injected system it relies on a fuel pump mounted within the tank for fine-grained control over the fuel flow. In the combustion chamber, the fuel injection nozzle also goes directly inside. In the case of FI devices, the pressurized fuel is very well atomized as a homogeneous mist, facilitating very efficient and safe combustion.

Advantages of fuel injection

• Optimized air-fuel mixture and atomization allow for cleaner, more efficient combustion.

• Better throttle response.

• Better fuel efficacy and more power.

• They do not easily breakdown.

Disadvantages of fuel injection

• They are more expensive than a carburetor.

• Cannot be repaired by a simple tool, which is expensive

So though, considering its cost, the benefits of a FI system are pretty obvious, you'd still be one of the millions who still put their trust in the good old carb. It’s all about the preference of the people after all.

Fuel wastage

Sure, everyone hates standing in lengthy road queues or traffic signals. Yet we leave the engine going most of the time and that results in needless fuel wastage. If the traffic timer indicates more than 30 seconds for it to turn green, it's still easier to shut off the bike. For heavy traffic scenarios, the same holds. If you are caught in a bad traffic jam, try switching the ignition off.

Habits of riding

There would be a dramatic change in fuel economy due to a change in riding patterns. Don't use the brake levers when accelerating, for instance. Calculate the next movement for riding. Don't unnecessarily brake. The more you brake, the more you need to accelerate and the more power you use.
