Chrome Android iOS can now alert you when your passwords are compromised

8th October 2020
"Not just that, but it will take you straight to the right 'change password' form after you've been alerted that the password is compromised, on whichever service you used it for."

Google is improving the security and usefulness of mobile Chrome - for iOS and Android. Starting today(6th October 2020), the mobile versions of the browser will alert you if any of the passwords you've asked it to remember have been compromised, and if so, how to fix them.

Not just that, but it will take you straight to the right 'change password' form after you've been alerted that the password is compromised, on whichever service you used it for. To check whether any of your passwords have been compromised, Chrome sends a copy of them to Google using a special form of encryption, that doesn't allow Google to figure out what your usernames or passwords are.

Safety Check is also coming to Chrome mobile, in a future version of the browser. This can manually check for compromised passwords, let you know if Safe Browsing is enabled, and whether the version of Chrome you're running has the latest security protections. On iOS, you will also be able to use Chrome to autofill saved login details into other apps or browsers. And to improve security on iOS, you'll get a biometric authentication prompt before Chrome fills any passwords.

Coming to Android soon is Enhanced Safe Browsing, which proactively protects you against phishing, malware, and other dangerous sites by sharing real-time data with Google's Safe Browsing service. The company says that among people who have enabled this on desktop, its predictive phishing protections lead to a roughly 20% drop in users entering their passwords into phishing websites. The downside, of course, is that now you're sharing even more real-time data on your usage with Google.

Apple, Google launch contact tracing platform

20th May 2020
"When the crisis has disappeared, the system must be taken down."

A report in AFP states that, US tech giants Apple and Google said Wednesday they were offering health authorities around the world their platform for coronavirus contact tracing, a key tool in trying to tame the pandemic.

"The work public health officials are doing around the world humbles us all," the two companies said in a statement.

"Google and Apple are clear that this is not a panacea but we do believe Exposure Notifications can make a contribution to the broader work of contact tracing," they said.

Under the notifications system, someone exposed to a person who tests positive for COVID-19 will receive an alert on their phone.

"Public health authorities will take the lead with this technology, and we will continue to support and advocate for it."

They said they would release software updates for health authorities to use to deploy their own apps, developed by their own technical staff.

In Europe, most countries are leaning toward the use of the Apple-Google platform but France and Britain have opted to develop their own systems, currently being tested.

The two US firms said 22 countries had so far asked to use their platform and they expect more to come on board in the coming weeks.

Amid concerns about the security and use of the personal data such tracing apps will generate, Google and Apple laid down several conditions for the use of their technology.

The first is that any app based on it must be voluntary, not gather geolocation data, and not be used for commercial purposes.

In addition, only one app per country is allowed so that there is no competition involved while it will be up to the individual user to declare if they have been infected with the coronavirus or not.

When the crisis has disappeared, the system must be taken down.

Google Pixel 4a to release at affordable price

3rd August 2020
"Pixel 4a finally to be available."

Google has started selling a long-delayed budget smartphone boasting the same high-quality camera and several other features available in fancier Pixel models that cost hundreds of dollars more.

The Pixel 4a unveiled Monday will be available Aug. 20 after months of delay caused by supply problems triggered by the pandemic.

It will cost $349, a $50 discount from a cheap Pixel released last year. It’s also a major markdown from other higher-end models in the existing product line-up that start at $799. The next versions of Google’s top-of-the-line Pixel phones will be released sometime this fall, Google said, without revealing their price.

The budget-minded Pixel 4a is coming out four months after Apple released a discount iPhone, the SE, priced at $399. The low price helped spur iPhone sales at a time of soaring unemployment, as the economy plunged into a deep recession that is causing millions of households to curb their spending so they can pay rent and buy food.

It’s doubtful the Pixel 4a will reel in as many consumers as the iPhone SE, based on Google’s inability to make significant inroads as a device maker so far, despite generally positive reviews for the devices, especially their cameras.

Google so far has been selling fewer than 10 million Pixel phones a year since rolling out the product line in 2016, barely making a dent a market where more than 1 billion phones are shipped annually, according to IDC.

Google Maps update includes more detailed colorful images

18th August 2020
"Google maps to be more distinguished and detailed to help differentiate streets, crosswalk, pathways, etc."

In addition to helping you find your way, the latest Google Maps update will help you know more details about any given area at a glance. Starting this week, Google will shade maps with colors based on satellite imagery so you can easily tell the difference between forests and beaches. The update will be available worldwide and will cover a variety of natural and manmade features.

While the refined color palette is meant to help you understand regional features, a future update will offer more detail on a much smaller scale. Google says it will roll out more granular info on streets so you can see their exact size at scale in addition to the locations of sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian islands.

The more detailed street images will start rolling out in London, New York and San Francisco in the coming months.

Google announced both changes in a blog post on Tuesday, but didn't offer a timeline on a broader rollout of the more granular view.

The color mapping update will supposedly not just be for large landscape features either. Google will use computer imagery to show more coloration on areas such as cities, suburbs and rural towns.
