Self-Driving Software Startup Oxbotica Raises $47million.

6th January 2021
"The Startup said the funding will speed up commercial deployment of its software platform "across multiple industries and key markets "

On Wednesday, Oxbotica, a self-driving tech startup, said it raised $47 million in its new funding round led by the oil giant BP's investment arm, including Halma Plc, the manufacturer of health and safety products, and Tencent.

The Startup said the funding will speed up commercial deployment of its software platform "across multiple industries and key markets."

The company based in Oxford said its software works "with any vehicle, any time, and in any place."

It has proved more difficult than initially expected to develop the technology for completely self-driving cars and robotic taxis, as it requires the development of sensors capable of working with pedestrians on urban streets. Yet industry analysts predict that automated driving could be feasible by the middle of this decade on roads.

As it should be simpler and cheaper to carry out, experts claim, autonomous technology for freight trucks on highways has attracted investor interest, thus offering a clearer advantage.

Last year, there was a series of deals involving manufacturers of lidar sensors, including Lidar Inc, Velodyne, Luminar, Aeva, Innoviz and, deemed necessary by several car manufacturers to make cars capable of driving themselves.

Elon Musk Tweets Tesla Will Achieve Full Self-Driving Capabilities

19th August 2020
"Elon Musk had earlier claimed that he had a major program under work at Tesla about which he didn't share details."

Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk recently announced on Twitter to share a variety of updates on Tesla Autopilot and Full Self Driving (FSD). The Dojo Neural Net training centre. Since 2019 April Tesla has been working on a "DOJO", a supercomputer to train neural networks (NN). Elon Musk had earlier claimed that he had a major program under work at Tesla about which he didn't share details.

The mighty super training computer is now called Dojo. The aim behind Dojo is to take in vast amounts of data and train at a video level and do unsupervised training of massive amount of video data with the help of the Dojo program.

The dojo will be enabling faster Neural Network learning. The dojo is used to increase training speed and enable self-supervised learning. But then what is the issue with the existing Autopilot that the new update will be enhancing.

Tesla is developing a NN training computer called Dojo to process truly vast amounts of video data. It’s a beast! Please consider joining our AI or computer/chip teams if this sounds interesting.

When / what do you think will be the next big public release that shows a massive leap in Autopilot FSD? I feel like when Navigate on Autopilot came out that was a huge leap, will there be another one like that soon?

Our main engineering locations are Palo Alto, Austin & Seattle, but working remotely is acceptable for exceptional candidates

Tesla will be releasing an improved Autopilot which will be a limited release in 2 months. Tesla had announced that they were doing a rewrite of the program. As we all know the current Autopilot/FSD is great. In fact, Musk claimed that he has been running an "alpha" version of the update on his personal vehicle.

Tesla has 10 billion km of real-world driving data. This brings to our common curiosities whether the regulatory authorities will find Tesla's autopilot safer for robotaxis to ply on roads.

Zoox, a Self-driving car launched by Amazon

15th December 2020
"Zoox's vehicle is a departure from most self-driving vehicles"

Amazon's self-driving vehicle startup revealed a prototype of its robotaxi, Zoox. The cube-like vehicle is loaded with sensors, no steering wheel, and a moonroof that is capable of transporting four people at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. The vehicle can drive bidirectionally and has four-wheel steering. One can spend 16 hours a day offering rides in cities.

Zoox's vehicle is a departure from most self-driving vehicles, which resemble the cars of today. For it has gotten rid of the steering wheel and brake pedal. Seats for four passengers are arranged to face each other to make conversation easier. The doors on Zoox's vehicle slide open, similar to the Origin from Cruise, the self-driving arm of GM.

For easy maneuvering in cities, Zoox's vehicle is a few feet shorter than small sedans like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. It also has an unusually large battery — 133kWh — roughly twice the size of many electric vehicles sold today. The large battery also contributes to its hefty weight for its size, 5,401 pounds.

Zoox won't be selling its vehicle and instead intends to operate a ride-hailing service to help public transportation in cities. Zoox's vehicle doesn't have a steering wheel or brake and accelerator pedals, so testing it is more complicated.
