Kia recalling 2,95,000 vehicles due to risk of engine fires

6th December 2020
"The recall comes just a week after Kia and affiliated Korean automaker Hyundai were fined by the U.S. government for allegedly delaying recalls."

Kia is recalling nearly 295,000 vehicles in the U.S. because the engines can stall or catch fire.

The recall comes just a week after Kia and affiliated Korean automaker Hyundai were fined by the U.S. government for allegedly delaying recalls.

The recall covers certain 2012 and 2013 Sorento SUVs, 2012 through 2015 Forte and Forte Koup cars, and 2011 through 2013 Optima Hybrid cars. Also included are 2014 and 2015 Soul SUVs and 2012 Sportage SUVs.

Kia says in documents posted Saturday by the U.S. government that no manufacturing defect has been found, but it’s recalling the vehicles to mitigate any risk of fire.

The recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating Kia and Hyundai engine fires in 2019. The agency opened the probe after the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety filed a petition seeking the investigation. When the inquiry began, the agency said it had owner complaints of more than 3,100 fires, 103 injuries, and one death.

Kia will notify owners starting Jan. 27. Dealers will inspect the engines for fuel or oil leaks and replace them if necessary. The company also is developing a knock sensor software update.

Last week, the NHTSA announced that Kia and Hyundai must pay $137 million in fines and for safety improvements because they moved too slowly to recall more than 1 million vehicles with engines that can fail. The fines resolve a three-year government probe into the companies’ behavior involving recalls of multiple models dating to the 2011 model year.

Kia must pay $27 million and invest $16 million in safety performance measures. Another $27 million payment will be deferred as long as Kia meets safety conditions, the NHTSA said.

Kia denied the U.S. allegations but said it wanted to avoid a protracted legal fight.

Engine failure and fire problems with Hyundais and Kias have plagued the companies for more than five years.

Kia Seltos Diesel Recalled Silently In India Over Faulty Fuel Pump

19th November 2020
"Kia has issued a recall on all of its diesel units of Seltos."

Kia Motors India has silently recalled diesel units of Seltos over some faulty fuel pump issue. This recall hasn’t been revealed by the company in public yet but a technical service bulletin from the Kia confirms the same.

 Kia Seltos recall

The document dated October 5, reveals that Kia has issued a recall on all of its diesel units of Seltos. The units in question have been manufactured between 1st October 2019 and 13th March 2020. The bulletin provides procedures to inspect and replace the fuel pump if it is found to be defective.

In a damaged fuel pump, a hole is found on the lower end of the filter. In other cases, there can be a crack in the plastic at the cylindrical head of the filter. In either or both cases the fuel pump would be replaced under warranty at no extra cost from the consumer. If no damage is found, it will not be replaced.

The fault fuel pump would make the car vibrate more than usual, have problems in starting and/or reduce the car’s pickup. Owners of diesel Seltos have reported no proactive communication from the company’s side. They have come to know about this through customers who underwent the same procedure whilst visiting Kia service stations for regular servicing.

Seltos is offered with a 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine which cranks out 115 PS of power and 240 N of peak torque. This unit comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Kia Motors press statement; “At Kia Motors, there is a regular practice of upgrading the product. On the feedback received from customers and various sources, necessary improvements are done keeping customers in mind. For vehicles already on road, a communication/guideline is released to the dealers giving details of the inspection process and repairs to be carried out. The recent communication involves inspection of fuel pump & in-case of any observation dealer is required to carry out repair/replacement as the case may be. There is no recall which is announced, it is basically a Service Action Campaign being done on the Kia cars to ensure that our customers do not face any inconvenience.”

KIA Motors Nepal has launched the Seltos on 20th December 2019.

Tesla recalls more than 9,500 Model X and Y vehicles because of manufacturing issues

22nd October 2021
"The cars have problems with weak adhesives and loose bolts"

Tesla has issued recall orders for 9,537 of its vehicles in the US, including 9,136 Model Xs from 2016 and 401 Model Ys from 2020, Reuters reports. The issues were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Tesla intends to recall the vehicles for testing and fixes.

The larger of the two orders affects 9,136 Model Xs from the 2016 model year. The NHTSA report says the cars feature cosmetic appliques that may have been applied without a primer, which could cause the trim on the roof of the car to fall off while driving at high speeds. Tesla says it will apply a retention test to the potentially affected cars and reapply primers and adhesives so the trim attaches properly.

It’s not the first time roof fixtures have caused headaches for Tesla. In one recent incident, a Model Y lost its entire roof due to a poorly applied seal, although the failure seems to have been unrelated to the issues that spurred today’s recalls.
A second, smaller recall was issued for 401 Model Y vehicles from the 2020 model year, which may feature loose bolts in the front upper control arm that connects to the car’s steering knuckles. Without the bolts properly tightened, the arm could detach from the steering knuckles, affecting the driver’s ability to steer the car. This is also not the first time steering has been an issue for Tesla cars — the company previously recalled 123,000 cars from its Model S line over a power steering problem.

Tesla says in the NHTSA report that it knows of only three vehicles affected by loose bolts, and overall it’s not aware of any accidents or injuries tied to either recall. The recall is unlikely to have much impact on Tesla’s recent financial success, which saw the value of the company’s stock increasing by more than $40 billion ahead of its anticipated listing on the S&P 500.

Tesla says it will test and fix affected vehicles free of charge if they are eligible for the recall. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
