Semiconductor Shortage Forces Automobile Production Cuts

10th January 2021
"Officials at Volkswagen, Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan all say they have been hit by shortages and forced to postpone the production of some models in order to keep other factories going."

A increasing global shortage of semiconductors for auto parts is forcing major car companies to stop or delay the production of vehicles just as they were recovering from factory shutdowns due to pandemics.

Officials at Volkswagen, Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan all say they have been hit by shortages and forced to postpone the production of some models in order to keep other factories going.

Ford

Industry officials say that semiconductor companies diverted production to consumer electronics during the worst of COVID-19 sales slowdown last spring. Global automakers have been forced to close plants to prevent the spread of the virus. There wasn't enough chips when automakers recovered.

The industry needs six to nine months of lead time to get chips through a complex supplier network.

When overseas factories producing the chips were forced to shut down in the early phases of the pandemic, the problems began. After the Trump administration placed sanctions on 11 Chinese firms for alleged labor violations, the issue was worsened last July.

At a factory in San Antonio, Texas, Toyota was forced to delay production of the full-size Tundra pickup. Next week, Ford had planned down time at its assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky, but pushed it forward to this week.

Fiat Chrysler briefly shut down factories in Brampton, Ontario, and a small-scale SUV factory in Toluca, Mexico, while Volkswagen said it faced production slowdowns due to the shortage in December. Nissan said it had to shift production in Japan, but in the U.S. it has not seen a big effect so far.

Automotive manufacturers have also stopped manufacturing slower-selling cars to switch the chips to targeted market regions.

Fiat said "This will minimize the impact of the current semiconductor shortage while ensuring we maintain production at our other North American plants.”

New vehicles that have electronic features such as Bluetooth communication and driver assistance, navigational systems and electric power systems, the automotive industry uses more semiconductors than ever before. Semiconductors usually are silicon chips that perform memory and control functions for items from computers and mobile devices to cars and microwave furnaces.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the global demand for semiconductors is projected to hit approximately USD 129 billion in 2025, almost three times its size in 2019.

The scarcity of chips needed in increasingly automated cars is the latest example of how the ebbs and flows of the semiconductor industry can have product ripple effects.

Nissan Magnite Subcompact SUV launched in Nepal

24th March 2022
"The Nissan Magnite comes into a crowded segment which has some really strong contenders."

The Nissan Magnite comes into a crowded segment that has some really strong contenders. As first impressions go the car comes across as a feature-rich, practical package.

The Magnite subcompact SUV has made its global launch in India and it enters a segment that has seen positive growth even in these trying times. The last few months have seen 2 new cars being added to an already long list in the segment and the Nissan Magnite which has just been unveiled globally will be the third new model to be added to that list and yes India will be the first market to get the car. The Nissan Magnite is powered by an all-new, 1.0-liter turbocharged engine that is one of the most powerful in the class.

Nissan Magnite production version has been finally unveiled after months of teaser images and specs being released by the Japanese carmaker which is betting big and hoping to storm the extremely competitive sub-compact SUV segment. Magnite indeed carries the weight of a whole lot of expectations for Nissan and will seek to challenge established players like Hyundai Venue and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza as well as relatively new challengers like Kia Sonet.

Magnite's face is flanked by extremely sleek LED bi-projector headlights, LED streak turn indicators, LED L-shaped DRLs, and LED fog lamps. While the blackened front grille bears a slight resemblance to the Dastun cars, the bonnet is sculpted with character lines and there is a silver skid plate to complete a sporty front visual profile.

From the side, Magnite's design benefits from square wheel arches and a ground clearance of 204 mm. The vehicle gets 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels while the functional roof rails mean that the owner would actually be able to use these to store and transport luggage or even cycles.

The windows are sufficiently large - the roof tapering slightly towards the C-pillar - while the doors close with a reassuring thud courtesy extra seals to ensure a check on NVH levels. There is also a very visible silver body cladding on the sides which begin from the front wheel arch and stop just short of the wheel arch at the rear.

The rear profile of Magnite manages to keep things simple while still attempting to grab eyeballs. This is because of the small but sleek LED tail lights and the 'Magnite' badge just under the rear wiper. The silver skid plate makes a comeback here and there is a brake light mounted on the rear spoiler as well.

Nissan Magnite

There are 336 liters of cargo space - the rear seats can be folded in 60:40 split - which is sufficient for a vehicle in this segment although it appears that the lifting angle could be a little too high, especially for heavy luggage.

An eight-inch infotainment screen almost instantly catches attention and offers wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This also puts out a rear parking feed as well as a side camera feed which may be helpful during parallel parking.

There are six speakers inside the Magnite while Nissan is promising an optional Tech pack at launch which would replace these with premium speakers. The same pack would also ensure the wireless phone charging system inside the Magnite, among other features like air purifier, puddle lamps, and ambient mood lighting.

Since the doors open wide, getting in and out of Magnite may not be much trouble and the drive and ride position appears to be sufficiently high.

Nissan has also equipped Magnite with a Drive-Eco function which rates the driving by assigning scores while also suggesting ways to improve drive efficiency.

Nissan is also promising an engaging drive experience with a Turbo HTA0 engine option while buyers may also choose the company's much-acclaimed X-Tronic CVT transmission option. Magnite also claims to have the best-in-class turning radius of 5.0m.

Nissan Magnite

The carmaker says Magnite will come with a host of safety features which include dual airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) for safer manoeuvering in tight spaces, Hill Start Assist (HAS), Traction Control, Anti-Roll bar, and ABS with EBD.

At launch, Magnite will be offered in multiple color options but Nissan is primarily highlighting the four-coat flare garnet red color which assumes slightly different shades when reflecting different lights at varying levels.
