Apple resisting EU push for common phone charger

26th January 2020
"Last week the European Parliament made an amendment to a draft law that would make a common charger essential for phones and other wireless gadgets followed by response by Apple."

EU has been pushing for a common charger plug. Recently they proposed for the Type-C to be the common charger but one company that is opposing and has been opposing for a while is Apple. Last week the European Parliament made an amendment to a draft law that would make a common charger essential for phones and other wireless gadgets followed by response by Apple.

Apple in response warns that a common charger will hamper innovation and be troublesome for consumers. To prove its point, Apple showed a study done by Copenhagen Economics commissioned by Apple that the consumer harm from a regulatory-mandated move to a common charger would cost at least 1.5 billion euros, outweighing the 13 million euro in associated environmental benefits.

Apple also said, “We believe regulation that forces conformity across the type of connector built into all smartphones stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, and would harm consumers in Europe and the economy as a whole.”

The European Commission will publish a study on the impact of a common charger around the end of the month or early February. In the present, they are considering the best way to create legislation for requiring a common charger.
