European Parliament votes in favor of a common charger
"European Parliament has voted in favor of a common charger and passed the resolution with 582-40 votes."
European Union has been in the process of standardizing common charger in all the phones for a while now. Recently they were preparing to hold a vote among European Parliament members to determine a common charger for the phones to reduce electronic waste to which Apple was resisting reason being it will hamper innovation and be troublesome for consumers.
Now, the European Parliament has voted in favor of a common charger and passed the resolution with 582-40 votes. European Commission has also urged to adopt new rules by July so that buyers don’t necessarily get a new charger with each new device.
Talks of the common chargers have been going on since a decade when the EU got major phone makers (Apple included) to voluntarily move towards a common standard. As a voluntary approach did not work out, new legislation had to be passed.
