Ford’s first electric pickup truck will be called the F-150 Lightning
"The F-150 Lightning is the name of Ford's upcoming electric pickup truck"
The F-150 Lightning is the name of Ford's upcoming electric pickup truck. The new electric vehicle will be unveiled on May 19th at an event held at the automaker's headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. It will also be broadcast online.
For more than 40 years, the Ford F-150 has been the most famous truck (and vehicle) in the United States, so its impending electrification is important. As a result, Ford is treating the unveiling as a big event, with hundreds of ways to watch it on various channels. In addition, the company is hosting 18 live events around the country, including ones in Times Square and Las Vegas.
Prior to today's announcement, the Lightning name had been leaked, and as Car & Driver pointed out, it's a name that Ford has used on its SVT F-150 street trucks since the early 1990s.
Although we'll get a closer look at the truck in the coming weeks, the F-150 Lightning won't be available until 2022. Ford recently broke ground on a new $700 million manufacturing plant in Michigan, which will produce the F-150 Lightning.
The F-150 Lightning's dual-motor setups, mobile power generation, “hands-free” driver assist options, and over-the-air software updates are among the information Ford has let slip. The 2021 F-150 PowerBoost is Ford's first plug-in hybrid version of the iconic F series, with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg on 4x2 models.
Ford, like all manufacturers, is working on an expensive initiative to improve its high-tech offerings, which include hybrid cars, partially and completely autonomous vehicles, connected-car services, and shared vehicles such as electric scooters.
By 2025, the company plans to invest $22 billion in the creation of over a dozen electrified models (including EVs and gas-electric hybrids).
Ford's electric and hybrid F-150s are only one part of the company's electric vehicle campaign. Despite some early setbacks, the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV is now being sold to its first customers. Ford has also invested more than $500 million in Rivian, an electric truck project, and is collaborating with them on a Lincoln electric vehicle. In addition, the company has formed an alliance with Volkswagen, which will see the American automaker use Volkswagen's battery technology in an electric vehicle set to hit the European market in 2023.
