Hyundai Nepal Focuses On EV Infrastructural Development & Service Setup

Laxmi InterContinental P. Ltd., the authorized distributor of Hyundai Automobiles is betting big on Electric Vehicle space.Hyundai Nepal is not only focused on selling its EV brand but is also investing extensively in the installation of Charging points.

Hyundai understands that the future of automobile is shifting towards electric vehicles and hence, it is aggressively expanding its product portfolio. The customers worldwide and in Nepal too, have become conscious of the environment and they want to contribute to its sustainability in some meaningful way. Switching to electric vehicles happen to be one of the effective way to contribute.

The last budget introduced by Nepal government had levied additional duties on electric vehicles that led to skyrocketing of the price. However, in the recent budget presented for 2078- 79, the duties on electric vehicles have been substantially reduced and Hyundai believes, this will push the consumers to switch to electric vehicles.

Hyundai currently boasts of 21 charging points spread across different parts of Nepal. Hyundai owners will have priority on charging their vehicles with free of cost however for other brand EV, charging cost may differ as per charging points.

Hyundai currently has 2 models of electric vehicles- namely Kona and IONIQ. Within a short span of launch, both these models have been well received and accepted by auto enthusiast in Nepalese market. Currently Hyundai has Kona (100 kW battery) priced at NPR. 56.96 lacs, Kona (150kW battery) priced at NPR. 71.96 lacs and IONIQ (100 kW battery) priced at NPR. 57.96 lacs.

The company sees a lot of potential in EV space and is counting on selling higher units of its EV portfolio. Keeping in mind the need to focus on developing infrastructure for EV, the company is planning to install substantial number of charging points across major cities and national highways of Nepal to make EV journey stress free.

Budget 2078/79 highlights | Automobile sector

"Finance Minister, Bishnu Poudel unveiled the budget for fiscal year 2078/79 of total Rs 16,47,57,00,000 yesterday."

Finance Minister, Bishnu Poudel unveiled the budget for fiscal year 2078/79 of total Rs 16,47,57,00,000 yesterday. Following are the highlights from the budget related to auto and transport sector of Nepal:  

Budget 2021-22 automobile

  • All the vehicles registered within the country will be provided with an embossed number that includes radio frequency identification, GPS service to be regulated to cargo and other vehicles.

  • E-ticketing services to be introduced to public transportation.

  • Minimum of 100 electric buses to operate in Kathmandu through Sajha Yatayat 

  • The local administration in major cities will be provided extra aids in order to operate big sized electric bus for public

  • To increase and promote the usage of electric vehicles, 500 charging stations, terminal buildings and other necessary infrastructures to be built all across the country. 

  • Excise duty tax on import of electric vehicles has been cancelled, previously 30% excise duty was applicable for EVs with a capacity of 50 KW, and 40% for 51 to 100 KW, 50% for 101 to 150 KW and 60 to 80% for 151 KW and above 

  • Custom duty for EVs have also been deducted to a maximum of 40% which was 60% in the last year’s budget.

  • Excise duty for imports of tires has also been reduced from 20% to 10%.

  • For the preservation of the environment, the government has planned to replace lightweight fuel supported vehicles with EVs by BS 2088.

  • 40% excise duty to be charged for both hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, previously hybrid cars needed to pay 60%.

  • The government is planning to bring 10 international EV manufacturing companies to Nepal

  • Production of auxiliary materials for vehicles to be done within the country, the land necessary for such production companies to be leased by the government for free.
