Samsung Camera App teardown suggests 8K Video Recording, 108MP sensor and many more features coming in future

16th November 2019
"Samsung will be using its own 108MP camera sensor in an upcoming device supporting 8K recording"

Samsung recently rolled out One UI 2.0 to its phones and Xdadevelopers team teardown the new version of its camera app to find what the company is working on. Xdadevelopers team in the teardown article wrote “An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.”

In the teardown they found hints that Samsung will be using its own 108MP camera sensor in an upcoming device. They also found new camera features which includes Director’s View, Single Take Photo, Night Hyperlapse, and more. Further more they found evidence that Samsung will bring 8K video recording support to a future device. Future Galaxy device having a 20:9 aspect ratio and 108MP camera sensor.

In their first find from the APK teardown, they found Samsung Camera app in One UI 2.0 beta 4 added 8K video recording support. Samsung’s latest SoC the Exynos 990 which it recently announced supports 4K@120fps and 8K@30fps video. This chipset and feature is likely for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S11 which should be launching in early 2020. They also found that to record in 8K, Samsung will be using their own 108MP sensor as small sensors wont be able to capture enough pixels for 8K.

Another feature xda team found was the 20:9 display reference. They are not sure in which device this feature will come. But this reference shows the company is working in a device which will feature 20:9 aspect ratio display.

Those were the features of the camera. Xda team along with features also found new camera modes in the teardown. These modes are Director’s view, Night Hyperlapse, Single Take Photo, Vertical Panoramas, and Custom Filters.

Director’s view will allow users to shoot a video with different lens simultaneously. Another mode is Night Hyperlapse and that is what it sounds like. It will allow users to take hyperlapse but with night mode.

Next up is Single Take Photo, this feature will allow users “Start shooting to capture the scene in a series of pictures and short videos.” After panning the camera for 15 sec, phone will process all the photos and videos what it just took and then you will be able to see a collection of it.

Another mode is Vertical Panorama. As the name suggests this mode will allow users to take vertical panorama instead of common vertical panorama.

Lastly the Custom Filters, Xda team was not able to find many information about this but they expect this mode to take certain aspects of the picture you like such as saturation, exposure, and brightness and turn it into a filter.
