Wi-Fi 6 officially launches: This faster Wi-Fi technology will save you time, money and boost your phone's battery life

16th September 2019
""Wi-Fi 6 will make browsing and downloading faster, boost the battery life of phones, tablets and other devices, and save energy""

The Wi-Fi speeds in your home, at football matches, at gigs, in hospitals and just about anywhere that has a public network are about to get a whole lot faster.

Wi-Fi 6 – the next-generation of Wi-Fi standards – has been officially launched by the non-profit Wi-Fi Alliance. This industry group sets the minimum standards that all devices that connect to a Wi-Fi network, as well as the Wi-Fi routers and networks themselves, have to meet in order to be certified.

As the name suggests, Wi-Fi 6 is the sixth generation of Wi-Fi technology. Its official name is 802.11ax and it follows on from 802.11ac, 802.11n, and 802.11g, but given how complicated and confusing these names are, the alliance has rebranded them as part of the Wi-Fi 6 launch.

What devices are compatible with Wi-Fi 6?

We've seen a handful of devices being launched in recent months that are Wi-Fi 6 Certified. This includes the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and the iPhone 11 range.

Netgear was one of the first to sell a range of Wi-Fi 6 routers, under its Nightgear AX brand and other manufacturers, including Asus and TP-Link, have also joined the roster.

Now that the Wi-Fi 6 standards have officially launched, expect to see more devices and routers carrying the Wi-Fi 6 Certified badge.
