Basic bicycle repairs you need to know

28th December 2021
"You can save some cash and time by learning how to do a few basic repairs on your own"

Over time your bike is going to break down to everyday wear and tear, especially if you riding on rough terrain and the cost of maintenance can quickly add up. You can save some cash and time by learning how to do a few basic repairs on your own.

Here are some basic and simple bicycle repairs you need to know for an emergency:

Fix a flat

Nothing ends a ride faster than a flat tire. No one wants to have to call a lifeline for something as simple as a flat tire.

Changing the entire thing out on the trail is probably not an option unless you have a spare saddled to your back while you ride, but something as small as a puncture is an easy fix.

There are plenty of tools that’ll help you take off the tire, but in most cases, you can get the job done with a little ingenuity and elbow grease in an emergency.

Always remember to let the remaining air out of the tire before you begin your repairs and, after removing the old tube and slipping in the new, make sure you shut the quick-release valve.

Chain Repair:

The chain is the one that takes on the toughest load. It’s responsible for making sure things are working smoothly and is also one of the first parts to yield to excessive use.

Having a chain break out in the wild or on a back road will leave you stuck on two feet if you don’t know how to repair it when it breaks.

You can find them at your local bike shop, along with a chain breaker, which makes it possible to hold a link in place so you can push out the little pin that connects it with its neighbors.

Consider practicing on an old chain before you apply your skills to a bike you’re currently riding, as a broken chain is a real pain when you’re out on the trail.

Change your brake pads

Like cars, the brake pads on bikes don’t always have the longest shelf life.

Luckily they’re so tiny there’s no reason to not have a couple of spares in your pocket when you’re out.

Changing them is a simple process and you can generally get the jump done with nothing more than a simple flat-head screwdriver.

Sometimes the process is easier if you remove the wheel, but a lot of riders find it works just fine with it still on.

Replace a broken spoke

Spokes are what make wheels strong enough to carry our weight, not to mention able to withstand physical forces like pedaling, braking, and whatever you’re riding over on the trail or road.

So when one breaks, there’s more strain on all the other spokes.

All kinds of things can cause a spoke to brake: landing hard on those rims, getting something caught in the spokes.

Carry the right tools

Carrying the right tools for the job is a skill unto itself.

Depending on how far you’ll be riding the repair kit you’ll need to carry varies, but there are a few essentials that might be helpful while the ride.

A spare tube, two or three plastic tire levers, and a hand pump or several CO2 cartridges are crucial since they’ll get you home after a flat.

It’s also a good idea to carry a patch kit in case you’re unlucky enough to get more than one flat.

Bicycle Maintenance Tips for Beginners

1st December 2021
"Maintenance skills are Important for everyone!"

Maintenance skills are Important for everyone! So today in this article we will be talking about the basic maintenance tip of bicycles for beginners.

Chain

The main and important thing to maintain your bicycle is to always wipe off and clean your chain after a ride.

Chain

Doing so will allow time for the lube to sink into the chain. Some people like to lube before a ride, but this can attract dust and dirt. When using lube, add just a tiny amount and wipe off any excess.

Brakes

Good brakes are essential for a bicycle to be safe and in a good condition. Brake pads wear down over time, so be sure to check your brake pads regularly. All you need to do is take a quick ride at home and pump your brakes.

Brake

Moreover, if you can feel that your brakes are soft, your brake pads need to be replaced.

Tyres

The most important thing that has an effect on the quality of your bike ride is tire pressure. The rear tire should have more pressure as it is taking more of the rider’s weight than the front. Make sure you check your tire pressure at least once every two weeks.

Tyre

Moreover, if you’re not going to ride your bike for a long time, like six months or a couple of years, try to remember to keep the tires inflated even during the pause.

If this is not possible, take the tires off completely. By doing this you prevent cracks on the sides of the tires.

Bolts and Nuts

Don’t let your bike fall apart while you ride! Check your bolts and nuts of the cycle regularly.

Moreover, you can keep things intact by quickly checking for any loose bolts, screws, or nuts before you head out. If you do notice that you’ve lost some nuts or bolts while on your ride, ensure you can fix things right away by carrying some spare nuts and bolts with you.

Bolts

Keep all the screws, bolts, and nuts in your bike where they belong by checking regularly if they are loose. Also, make sure when you are buying a new bike, ask your bike shop to give you a bag of spare nuts and bolts. You should get them for free because they are dirt cheap.

 Fix a Flat Tyre

If you ride alone, this is one of the best tips for you. Learn to fix Flat tyres!

Tube

YouTube has tons of good videos in all languages guiding you on how to prepare, glue the patch on and remount the tire. Ensure you don’t get stranded out in the middle of nowhere by learning how to patch tubes. YouTube has some helpful videos on the subject.

Also, if you start getting many flats with the same wheel, check your tire and the inside of the rim for sharp objects or protruding spoke.

Ways to Stop Your Mountain Bike/Bicycle From Rusting

5th December 2021
"Mountain bikes/Bicycles are huge investments. So you want to make sure it lasts for a long time but there are different things that occur like rust."

Mountain bikes/Bicycles are huge investments. So you want to make sure it lasts for a long time but there are different things that occur like rust.

Yes, rusting can shorten the lifespan of many mountain bikes. So here are some tips to prevent your bicycle from rusting:

Keep Your Bike Oiled and Lubricated

Lubricant acts as a barrier between the elements and the metal on your bike. So as a bicycle owner, you should always have a supply of bike lubricant.

As long as there’s a layer of lubricant on exposed metal and your mountain bike chain it won’t rust.

Lubricant

Remember. To always keep your bicycle parts oiled and lubricated as this will prevent rusting. Make sure to apply lubricant to the chain, nuts, and bolts, basically anything that is exposed metal.

Keep Your Bike Covered if Outside

Leaving your bicycle outside means giving it a chance of rusting. Storing bicycles inside is important when not in use but this isn’t an option for everyone.

Moisture is the catalyst for rust or corrosion, so leaving your bike outdoors, where dew, rain, or snow can collect on it is never a good idea.

Moreover, Rust can cause parts to seize up and the gears and chain won’t be as smooth. If the frame begins to rust it will lose its structural strength.

Bike cover

Ideally, a shaded, climate-controlled environment is the best storage solution. Also, if you’re planning on leaving your bike outside at night then I would highly recommend getting a bike cover to place over your bike.

You need a cover that is big enough to keep moisture, fog, snow, or rain from getting on your bike. A nice cover will keep your bike dry.

As a bonus – it can keep the sun off your bike too which can cause the coloring on bicycles to fade and any plastic pieces to become brittle.

Keep Your Bike Clean

Dirt, soil, and mud are the major elements that can help rust begin on your bicycle. If your bike is getting dirty from riding then take the time to give it a quick wipe down to remove any dirt from it.

bike wash

It’s good to give your bike a cleaning every time you ride is the best solution to keep your bike dry and free of rusting elements.

Install fenders and frame protection on your new ride

Mountain bikes take a lot of abuse. Tires hurl dirt and rocks against the frame and splatter mud and grime onto the suspension and drivetrain. While you can’t completely protect your bike from the elements during a ride, using fenders and frame protection will greatly reduce the harm done.

fender

Debris can penetrate suspension internals as stanchions compress while soaking up bumps in the trail, and fenders serve to deflect dirt and mud away from sensitive parts.

Frame protection prevents rocks or other debris — which can create chips in the paint that expose the bare metal to the elements, leading to rust or corrosion — from hitting your frame.
