Electrical Safety Tips for your Home

2nd December 2021
"Electricity should never be taken lightly. Not at all!"

Electricity should never be taken lightly. Not at all! We are all aware of this but sometimes even after knowing we tend to make some mistakes which result in unfortunate problems and situations.

So to avoid those situations, today in this article we will be talking about basic electrical safety for our home:

Keep a Fire Extinguisher

This thing is not generally found in a Nepalese home. But remember this is one of the most important things you need to have in your house because you never know when you might need it!

Avoid Using Electrical Items in Wet Areas

This mistake is done by half of us we use electrical items with wet hands or in wet areas. Remember, Electricity and water do not mix, so don’t allow them to come in contact with each other.

Dust Your Appliances

We all know how much we ignore these things but they shouldn’t be ignored at all!

Dusting your appliances from time to time is very important because dust can cause blockages in your appliance and result in a breakdown and even cause fire sometimes! So, keep your electrical appliances free from dust.

Don’t Overload PowerPoints

Overloading your sockets with multiple appliances is never a good idea. Each socket has a maximum level of amperage it can handle.

Moreover, the more plugs that are connected to one socket, the more power you’re demanding from just one outlet and there is a chance that it could result in a short circuit and even a fire.

Replace Damaged Plugs

This is the most important thing you need to think about and check from time to time.

Plugs should be monitored for damage, particularly for older appliances that might have experienced more wear and tear from regular use than your newer appliances so that you and your house is safe from unfortunate electrical situations.

Turn It Off when not in use

This should be the strict rule to be followed by you and your members in your home. If you are not using an appliance, turn it off or unplug it completely.

Also, never, ever leave heat-based appliances unattended. This includes heaters, hairdryers, and hair straighteners because these could easily overheat, potentially causing a fire.

Safety measures to consider while using a room heater

7th November 2020
"Do not forget to turn the room heater off before sleeping!"

Room heaters are inevitable to survive through chilly winters. They warm up our space and help us focus on our work easing us from the inconvenience of cold. They can be of many types- infrared, convection, fan heaters, and many more. You can also get yourself a portable heater if you like to have warmth around you wherever you move. Basically, room heaters have eased our lives and helped us survive the icy cold winters.

Room heaters can be as harmful as they are convenient if used improperly. You may have heard about several accidents and deaths caused by improper use of heaters. On one hand, if used with proper precautions, heaters help you to survive the cold. And, on other hand, if used improperly, you will be shocked if you hear the damages done by a simple heater. Many lives have been taken by the Carbon Monoxide fumes, an odorless, invisible yet poisonous gas, generated by the room heaters. So, make sure to use them with proper precautions.

Here are a few safety measures to consider while using a room heater.

Keep it in an open space far from inflammable objects

It is best if you place your heater on a flat open floor. As it is burning hot, especially the infrared heaters come with a hot heating element that is hot enough to burn papers if they contact. So, to avoid any kind of fire accidents, it is best to place the heater in an open space at least 2-3 feet away from furniture, papers, blankets, etc.

Look out for the broken cord

Before using the heater, take a few seconds out to inspect the heater to check if it has any broken cord. Broken cords or bars may lead to higher health problems if avoided. Moreover, do not let any dust get piled up in the heating element as well. If the health of the heater gets bad, do not avoid it and either has it repaired by a professional or replace it with a new one.

Place the heater away from the reach of children and pets

Do not experiment

Often times, there have been accidents when people tried to dry clothes with the help of a room heater. The room heater was made to keep you and your room warm and nothing else. Do not run experiments with your heater, unless you want to burn your house down.

Avoid overloading power

The heater consumes a lot of power; so, make sure that it is not plugged with any other electrical appliances. It may cause overloading of power which leads to shortcircuit as well.

Turn it off before sleeping

You may have heard people dying in their sleep because of the carbon monoxide that accumulates in the room. If you do not want to suffocate yourself to death, do not forget to turn the heater off before sleeping or leaving the room.

Do not place it in humid places

It is pretty tempting to place a heater in your bathroom during showers in the winter. But, this temptation might cause significant hazards. Do not place a heater in humid places and avoid liquids at any cost. Also, avoid touching the heater with wet hands to avoid electrical damages.

5 Safety measures while using a Gas-Geyser

8th November 2020
"Beware of the Carbon Monoxide!"

Water heaters nowadays have become an indispensable part of our day-to-day life. Especially during winter and cold seasons, they are used largely and help us survive the winter. Be it for bathing, washing dishes, or washing clothes, a water heater eases our lives by taking away the pain caused by cold from our hands. Gas geyser is quite common in Nepalese households. Even though it is widely replaced by solar and electric geysers nowadays, many houses are still using gas geysers. Gas-based Geyser uses Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) to heat water. The LPG can be supplied through the pipeline connected to your house, or through a gas cylinder. As LPG is highly flammable, thorough precaution is required for safe heater operation.

Ventilated room

It is very vital to place the gas cylinder in a ventilated room. If you can, place the cylinder somewhere out and use a gas pipe to pass the gas into the geyser. It helps you avoid the damages and harm caused by gas leakage. Moreover, make sure your room where the geyser is placed is also properly ventilated so that the fumes can get away to release outside rather than getting all gathered up inside the house.

Install a carbon monoxide monitor

Every year about 200 people lose their lives to this deadly colorless and odorless gas. As it is odorless, you won't even know if the air you breathe in is filled with carbon monoxide or not. You won't have any idea about when the oxygen in the bathroom converts into Carbon Monoxide and when you start to suffocate. It really is a disastrous and deadly gas that is emitted by the gas geysers as well. So, it's best to install a carbon monoxide monitor in order to track the amount of carbon monoxide filled inside your room and get yourself out of harm's way.

Gas leaks

You should always be aware of gas leaks of your LPG cylinders. It's best if you have a gas leak detector. Even though LPG gas has a strong smell, if it is not addressed at the time, it may lead to disasters. Make sure the gas pipe you use is of high-quality and is certified with international standards.

Check temperature settings

Water heaters are often specially sized to match the size and heating needs of a house. The tank that doesn't correspond with the requirement of your house may cause several harms because they can reach unsafe temperatures at unsafe pressure levels. It is advised that you should never set the water heater’s temperature above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Degrees are typically only available on commercial tanks, so check the temperature on your residential tank with a meat thermometer. Anything above 130 degrees can cause scalding and is a breeding ground for the legionella bacteria.

Test temperature/ pressure relief valve

The temperature/pressure relief valve is designed to keep your water heater from exploding if the temperature or pressure goes higher than a safe limit. As the pressure relief valve is prone to failure, you should check and inspect the temperature/ pressure relief valve at least once a month by pulling the handle. Water should flow freely, but stop when you release the handle. If there is no water flow or minimal drips, the valve needs replacement. The drain lines should also go down and out, not up. The failure of the valve may result in catastrophic explosions as well.
