Galaxy S21 unlocking options to include Bixby Voice

24th October 2021
"we're also incredibly curious to find out why Samsung thinks this is something people might want or use, regardless of how well it could work"

Breaking news: Bixby still exists. Not just that, but it will still exist in 2021, as well. According to a new report, the S21 family will ship with Bixby Voice on board next year. So if you were hoping for an unceremonious burial of the failed assistant platform, that's still some way off, it seems.

In the meantime, Samsung wants to extend Bixby's reach and as such, in the S21 series, Bixby Voice will be a biometric unlocking option, alongside fingerprint recognition and face unlock.

This sounds even less secure than face unlocks, and given how reliable Bixby Voice is at understanding what you want from it, we can only imagine how 'seamless' the process of unlocking your phone with your voice could be. But hey, we're eager to be proven wrong here, although we're also incredibly curious to find out why Samsung thinks this is something people might want or use, regardless of how well (or badly) it could work.

Bixby Voice unlocking will apparently be part of One UI 3.1, the version of Samsung's skin that will make its debut on the S21 devices. The feature will make it to other Samsung handsets as they get updated to One UI 3.1.

Nokia takes a hit as Samsung secures Verizon 5G deal

7th September 2020
"Verizon uses several suppliers for building various parts of a network."

Finnish telecom firm Nokia (NOKIA.HE) has suffered a setback after a source close to the matter confirmed it had lost out to Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) on a part of the contract to supply new 5G equipment to Verizon (VZ.N) in the United States.

With this $6.64 billion contract win, Samsung has reinforced its position as a challenger to the dominance of Nokia and its Nordic rival Ericsson (ERICb.ST) in selling telecom gear, after China’s Huawei was barred from bidding for 5G contracts in the United States.

The loss for Nokia comes after its new Chief Executive Pekka Lundmark took the top job in August, but the source said negotiations were going on before he took charge.

A Nokia spokeswoman declined to comment on the loss.

We play a critical role in enabling Verizon’s 3G and 4G networks and continue to work with them to accelerate innovation in 5G,” she said. “They remain a top-three global customer.”

Major telecom firms such as Verizon uses several suppliers for building various parts of a network with radio contracts accounting for a big part of the spending.

Liberum analyst Janardan Menon said the contract loss could impact Nokia’s ability to invest in technology at the same rate at its competition, and rival Ericsson might have even increased its share at Verizon. Liberum has a “hold” rating on Nokia shares.

An Ericsson spokesman declined to comment.

Nokia shares were down 1% in morning trade.

The shares had fallen in July when brokerage JPMorgan said there was a real risk Verizon would reduce its dependence on Nokia as its primary RAN (radio access network) supplier going forward and shift towards Samsung.

Amazon’s voice assistant alliance still hasn’t attracted any of its rivals

9th September 2020
"Amazon’s biggest rivals in the voice assistant space — Apple, Google, and Samsung — have yet to join."

Last September, Amazon announced a voice assistant alliance ahead of its yearly fall event with the goal to ensure smart devices are compatible with multiple digital assistants concurrently. Nearly a year later, the coalition has over 70 companies pledging support, including Facebook, Garmin, and Xiaomi, which recently joined. Yet, Amazon’s biggest rivals in the voice assistant space — Apple, Google, and Samsung — have yet to join.

Amazon’s Voice Interoperability Initiative’s goal is to have companies create smart devices that support multiple voice assistants like Alexa or Cortana concurrently. But without Apple, Google, and Samsung’s voice assistants (Siri, Google Assistant, and Bixby), the biggest competitors to Alexa, the idea feels empty. They’ve got 70+ companies on board, but it seems like they’re missing the ones that matter?

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE THREE NEW MEMBERS DON’T SEEM THAT BIG OF A DEAL FOR AMAZON’S INITIATIVE, EITHER
The announcement of the three new members don’t seem that big of a deal for Amazon’s initiative, either, as each company already supports Alexa:

Facebook’s Portal devices have Alexa integration
Garmin’s GPS devices include Amazon Alexa
Xiaomi has an Alexa skill that allows the voice assistant to connect and operate its smart devices
Oddly enough, Apple and Google have no issues collaborating with Amazon to work on an open-source smart home platform, which is expected to launch next year. But that initiative doesn’t require Apple and Google to potentially let additional assistants like Alexa onto their smartphones.

The e-commerce giant also announced today that it had released new guidelines to help manufacturers create new devices that support more than one voice assistant.
