Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra launched in Nepal

5th August 2020
"Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra unveiled with upgraded screens"

Samsung Electronics hosted its first-ever Galaxy Unpacked virtual event live-streamed from Korea to introduce a new suite of power devices. Five devices were revealed during the event, in which it unveiled the Galaxy Note 20 series alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable phone, Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+ tablets, Galaxy Watch 3 smartwatch, and Galaxy Buds Live earbuds.

The 2020 generation brings improvements on all fronts, from software to hardware, to make the S Pen even better. The Galaxy Note20 Ultra is built on the S20 Ultra platform. It has the same screen, a 6.9” Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 1440p+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.

The S Pen and the supporting Wacom layer on the screen have been updated to achieve 9 ms latency. Samsung says that at this point the experience is very much like writing on paper. Notes you take can be converted to Microsoft Office formats and synced with your other devices via Samsung Notes.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra Overview

The rear camera still features the large 108 MP main sensor. It produces 12 MP photos with binning, records 8K videos at 24 fps with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio (this ratio is also available for 1080p at 120 fps videos) The Note20 Ultra still boasts a periscope lens with 5x optical magnification as opposed to 4x. There is now a 12MP sensor sitting behind it, replacing the 48MP sensor of the S20 Ultra.

The chipset divide remains, with a partial upgrade. Much of the world will get the Snapdragon 865+ chipset, which is 10% faster than the 865 found inside the S20 phones.

The Note20 duo is the first phone with special optimizations baked into their software. There will be over 100 Xbox titles available in mid-September with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The screen's 240 Hz touch sampling rate matches dedicated gaming phones.

Key Specs at a glance: Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G

  • Display- 6.90-inch; Dynamic AMOLED 2X capacitive touchscreen; 1440 x 3088 pixels; 120Hz Refresh Rate
  • Chipset- Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+
  • CPU- Octa-core (2x2.73 GHz Mongoose M5 & 2x2.50 GHz Cortex-A76 & 4x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55)

  • Battery- 4500mAh non-removable; 25W fast charging; 15W fast wireless charging

The battery has been bumped up to 4,500 mAh, which is 200 mAh more than the Note10+ but 500 mAh less than the S20 Ultra. The phone is bundled with a 25 W charger, which is the fastest supported. The phone will be available in three colours at launch: Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black and Mystic White.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra starts at $1,300/€1,266/£1,180 for the model with 256GB of storage. There is a 512GB option as well. Shipments will start “in select markets” on August 21. There will be both 4G and 5G (with mmWave) models available, but availability will differ by market.

The Phone is available in the Nepalese market from September 7, 2020. The 8GB/256GB storage variant is available in Nepal at the price of Rs. 139,999.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Overview

The Galaxy Note20 comes with a larger screen than its predecessor – 6.7”, up from 6.3” – making it only slightly smaller than the Ultra. However, it is a flat panel rather than a curved one. This is a 1080p+ panel with the old Gorilla Glass 5 (even the Note10 used GG6). Those aren't the only downgrades compared to the Ultra either. The one that hurts the most is the refresh rate, a standard 60 Hz.

Titanium version of the Samsung Galaxy Watch3 unveiled in Germany

2nd September 2020
"Premium version appears is nowhere to be seen outside of Germany for now"

Samsung quietly unveiled a more premium version of the Galaxy Watch3 – one that uses titanium for the body instead of the usual stainless steel. Samsung Germany posted the press release, saying that the watch will be available online starting on September 18.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch3 Titan will only come in 45 mm size (there’s no mention of a 41mm option) and will be painted in Mystic Black exclusively. The bracelet is made out of stainless steel, by the way, only the watch body is titanium.

This premium version appears is nowhere to be seen outside of Germany for now so we don’t know which other markets will get it (the rest of the EU, presumably). You can see it in the online store.

Now, for the price - €633. That’s quite a premium over the €447 that the regular 45mm watch costs (note: the Titan model is Wi-Fi only, there’s no LTE option). You can always get a Galaxy Fit2 smart band for €47 (available October 2).

Nokia takes a hit as Samsung secures Verizon 5G deal

7th September 2020
"Verizon uses several suppliers for building various parts of a network."

Finnish telecom firm Nokia (NOKIA.HE) has suffered a setback after a source close to the matter confirmed it had lost out to Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) on a part of the contract to supply new 5G equipment to Verizon (VZ.N) in the United States.

With this $6.64 billion contract win, Samsung has reinforced its position as a challenger to the dominance of Nokia and its Nordic rival Ericsson (ERICb.ST) in selling telecom gear, after China’s Huawei was barred from bidding for 5G contracts in the United States.

The loss for Nokia comes after its new Chief Executive Pekka Lundmark took the top job in August, but the source said negotiations were going on before he took charge.

A Nokia spokeswoman declined to comment on the loss.

We play a critical role in enabling Verizon’s 3G and 4G networks and continue to work with them to accelerate innovation in 5G,” she said. “They remain a top-three global customer.”

Major telecom firms such as Verizon uses several suppliers for building various parts of a network with radio contracts accounting for a big part of the spending.

Liberum analyst Janardan Menon said the contract loss could impact Nokia’s ability to invest in technology at the same rate at its competition, and rival Ericsson might have even increased its share at Verizon. Liberum has a “hold” rating on Nokia shares.

An Ericsson spokesman declined to comment.

Nokia shares were down 1% in morning trade.

The shares had fallen in July when brokerage JPMorgan said there was a real risk Verizon would reduce its dependence on Nokia as its primary RAN (radio access network) supplier going forward and shift towards Samsung.
