Nokia 3.1 Android 10 update now rolling out :How to update

7th October 2020
"Nokia phones should be the fastest to get the Android 10 update but the Nokia 3.1 seems late to the party."

Nokia 3.1 is the latest Android One smartphone from the house of HMD Global to get the Android 10 version. Android One programme has many perks, which nearly all Nokia-branded phones come with, including Android upgrades for about three years. Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 so it has still not hit the end of the road when it comes to Android updates. The Android 10 update is rolling out to units select countries as a part of the first wave, while more markets will be covered later.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nokia 3.1 is now getting the Android 10 update in select markets.

  • The Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 under the Android One programme.

  • HMD Global recently rolled out Android 10 to a series of Nokia phones.

If you own a Nokia 3.1 in one of these markets, you will soon receive the Android 10 update in the first wave: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, or Vietnam. The second-wave countries have not been announced yet, but they mostly will be more mature markets, the ones where Nokia is not relatively aggressive.

Android 10 was released last year so Nokia 3.1 is around a year late to the party. While the Android One programme ensures yearly Android version updates, it is not technically clear what updates these are going to be. Ideally, Nokia 3.1 should be receiving Android 11 as the final nail in the coffin for the software updates on it, but as weird as Google’s Android One programme is, it is never certain. Anyway, it is good news for Nokia 3.1 users.

To update your Nokia 3.1 to Android 10, you should:

  • Go to the Settings app
  • Now, navigate to About phone section
  • Tap on System updates and check for the new software
  • If available, you will need to manually provide authorisation for Android 10 update on your Nokia 3.1

That is all you need to do to update your phone. Make sure your phone is adequately charged and that all your data is backed up before you begin with the update process.

Nokia tops the Global Ranking in updating Android OS

31st August 2019
"Talking about the time taken by the company to update its devices, again Nokia took the no. 1 spot."

Nokia was the household name in the past, almost everyone either owned a Nokia or had heard about Nokia. But due to other competitors, bringing better hardware and software experience to the customers, it lost the battle to iphones and android devices. But now Nokia is gaining its popularity again. Nokia has been constantly launching their take on every phone segments specially on budget to mid budget phones. Due to this, they already have a couple of phones in the market to take care of.

Now, a new report by Counterpoint Research has ranked Android phone manufacturers by their ability to deliver updates. And according to the same report, Nokia is placed at the first position in providing updates to its phones and currently 96% of its phones are running Android Pie followed by Samsung(89%, Xiaomi(84%), Huawei(82%) and Lenovo(43%).

To determine the result of the report, Counterpoint looked at the phones sold cumulatively since Q3 2018 by the brands and then checked whether the phones are running on the Android Pie if not has it been updated to Android Pie or not.

Talking about the time taken by the company to update its devices, again Nokia took the no. 1 spot. Nokia updated 94% of its devices in just 12 months followed by Xiaomi(62%), Lenovo(52%), Huawei(40%) Vivo(28%) and Samsung(23%).

Will Nokia claim back the former glory it once lost? From the looks of it Nokia is in right path of doing so.

Nokia and Finland’s Tampere University join forces to develop 5G chipsets

6th October 2020
"A joint venture creates a foundation for the long-term development of silicon-based processors."

Nokia today announced that it has joined forces with Tampere University to establish a ‘Center of Excellence’ to enhance the development of System-on-Chip (SoC) custom processors for its ReefShark chipset portfolio.

The partnership, which will be based at the University campus, aims to accelerate the introduction of the technology into Nokia’s ReefShark chipset portfolio. It will also enhance Nokia’s silicon capabilities and development of proprietary SoCs. The Center of Excellence is expected to open in November this year.

The purpose of the partnership is to accelerate the development of proprietary SoC chipsets, including their design and manufacture, to improve time-to-market and to build a long-term SoC development competence and a foundation for technology leadership. The joint venture will also target an annual chip cadence with ecosystem partners, and see Nokia contribute to the module and physical implementation.

Nokia will also explore areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and security hardware development as well as open-source hardware-based SoCs. Nokia’s global reach will support Tampere University with future research projects as well as guide them in their approach to educating the engineers of the future.

The project is supported by Business Finland through Nokia’s Veturi initiative that drives industrial 5G and ecosystem development with industry partners and leading universities. Nokia has maintained a close partnership with Tampere University since its ‘Nokia Innovation Center’ was co-located with the University in the 2000s.

Jyrki Vuorinen, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University: “We are excited to partner with Nokia to develop custom silicon System-on-Chip solutions for 5G infrastructure. This is an exciting joint project that accelerates silicon innovation and ultimately enables operators to realize the benefits of 5G. We have recruited a professor of practice and started the recruitment process of two international professorships.”

Ari Kynaslahti, Head of Product Management at Nokia said: “This important collaboration highlights our continued commitment to developing our ReefShark chipset portfolio and ensures that Nokia 5G solutions deliver best-in-class performance to our customers. We look forward to working closely and collaboratively with Tampere University on this exciting venture.

Nokia is a global leader in 5G with the industry's only end-to-end portfolio that is available globally. With more than 150 commercial engagements underway, our 5G solutions, software, and services allow our customers to take advantage of the promise of this next generation of network technology.
