Separate driving license with QR code from next month
"The department believes that such a card will reduce traffic violations"
The government is going to issue separate licenses for drivers who have passed the pilot test of driver’s license from Shrawan (mid July).
The Department of Transportation is about to issue a separate card with a QR code for the first one-year period after passing the trial. Earlier, preparations were made to issue such a card from June, but it was postponed for two months due to the Corona epidemic. Director-General of the department Namaraj Ghimire informed that a separate PVC card with QR code is being introduced and it can be used for a trial period of one year.
According to him, the driver who has passed the trial will be given a smart license only after one year and a license with a QR code will be issued for that period. Stating that the traffic will check the driver’s license based on the QR code, he said, “Traffic will know all the necessary details of the driver on the card through its mobile phone.”
The department believes that such a card will reduce traffic violations. Traffic has made more than five holes in the card and after one year, smart driving will not be allowed and the license test will be re-introduced.
Along with this, the department will now distribute two types of driver’s licenses. A provisional period will be provided to the drivers who have passed the trial and a smart driver’s license will be distributed to the drivers who have passed the trial period.
He said, ‘PVC cards do not have a chip like a smart license. PVC cards have a barcode. The barcode contains all the details of the driver. ‘After scanning the barcode, the police find out whether the license is fake or genuine.Similarly, such cards will be distributed to the persons who have applied for renewal of driver’s license till they get a new smart license.
Director-General Ghimire said that it was not a trial period due to the use of chips in smart cards. These cards will be distributed from 19 offices of the Department of Transport Management across the country including Kathmandu.
