Things to know about engine oil drain interval

Engine Oil is one of many substances consisting of base oils improved with different additives, especially anti-wear additives, detergents, dispersants, and viscosity index improvers for multi-grade oils. For the lubrication of internal combustion engines, fuel oil is used. Engine oil is the vehicle's blood, basically. It flows through the motor to clear up the debris and other unwanted contaminants and allows the motorbike to run smoothly. There's nothing like moving the oil too much. The more you do this, the more the engine runs. But that doesn't mean you're too frequently compelled to change them. Through oil drain periods, here are five things you have to remember.

drain-oil

1. Engine type and recommendations from the manufacturer

Manufacturers sell multiple engine models and subtypes, and it can be a difficult challenge to pick the engine oil that fits your engine. What the manufacturer advises for the engine oil and oil drain periods is fair to go for. To protect the engine and its warranty, the factory set intervals are planned.

2. Capacities

Always follow the exact amount of oil for the engine recommended by the manufacturer. Don't ever go cheap and scarce for your oil pump. The quantity of oil in the engine influences the wear and function of the engine components. Use bigger oil filters if necessary, which will increase the filtering capability.

3. Type of fuel

While the type of fuel used in the engine or its efficiency can not be monitored, you can certainly be conscious of its impact on the engine. Once again, obey the advice of the producer and behave accordingly. Bear in mind that premium fuel forms do not necessarily have improved performance.

4. Temperatures

The temperature outside can control the capacity of the oil to do its job. Under cold climates, engine oils begin to become dense and thin under high temperatures, thus affecting their lubrication performance. As recommended, always follow the right viscosity range.

5. Changing Cycle

When to top up the oil and when to change it, you always do. Without proper cleaning and oil change, topping up of engine oils repeatedly can lead to severe trouble.

Regularly cleaning the bike makes it work at its best and guarantees you can enjoy healthy and trouble-free cycling. It's convenient enough to do much of the simple service work yourself.

What is maximum power and peak torque?

23rd December 2019
"There is a piston that gets power from the fuel that is burned to run the motorcycle. The piston is connected to a rod and the rod is connected to a crankshaft."

Being a review team, we often use technical terms like maximum power and peak torque. But what is it really? Why is it one of the most important factors of any automobile to determine the character, feel and ride? We will try explaining it to you in the simplest form.

There is a piston that gets power from the fuel that is burned to run the motorcycle. The piston is connected to a rod and the rod is connected to a crankshaft.

Motor running GIF

Picture a bicycle. The more force you apply in the pedal, the faster the bicycle runs. Similarly, more force from the piston moves the crankshaft faster. Confused?

cycle pedaling

The distance between the pedal to the rotation point is comparable to the distance between the crank and the middle point of the crankshaft, and in the same way, as in the bicycle example, the distance "counts" for 100% when the point of the crank that is connected to the rod has an angle of 90 degrees with the direction of the piston, and for 0% when that point is in the highest or the lowest position. Still, confused?

In simple terms, the more you rev the throttle, the pistons move rapidly which rotates the crankshaft to reach a higher speed.

Bike Engine

The power we feel is the torque. It is expressed in Newton Meter (Nm). The power and revolution per minute provided by that power is the number we state during the engine specification. (Nm@rpm)

The torque provided by the piston varies from rpm to rpm. The torque at any rpm is the average power the piston delivers at the revolution stroke. The amount of power tells how fast the engine can rotate the wheels. Simply putting, torque is the pulling power of a vehicle.

Difference between power and torque

Power is the expression of how fast a motorcycle can run when accelerated. It is delivered by the combination of torque and the revolution per minute. When buying an automobile, only looking at the power is not enough. The power collapse after it reaches its limits, and it is the torque that defines the real character and feel of the bike. The advantage of high torque is that you get power from low rpms too.

Or else,  when you ride a motorbike, you will have to change gears a lot, to keep the engine in the high rpm's all the time: in the narrow area where there is power. You will also have to use the clutch when accelerating from a standstill: the engine needs a high rpm to be able to do that.

Power is required in the city streets to cross the traffic in a jiffy and the torque is required when you are cruising down the highway with power in low rpms.

What is Hill Start Assist? How does it work ?

29th February 2020
"What to do when you are in traffic on an inclined road?"

Imagine getting stuck in a traffic jam on a steep road. You have vehicles in front of you and behind you, and the road is inclined. You can’t accelerate hard enough for the car to move forward because of the car in front of you. And if you give less power, chances are that you would hit the car behind you.

Hill Start Assist

What to do when your car is stopped on a steep road?

You need a Hill Start Assist.

What is Hill Start Assist?

Hill Start Assist is a feature that helps prevent roll-back when starting up again from a stopped position on an incline.

How does Hill Start Assist work?

This feature can prevent rollback on an inclined road by holding the brakes while you switch between the brakes and hitting the gas. Some versions can also prevent your car from rolling forward on a decline.

What is the science behind Hill Start Assist?

Sensors in the vehicle are used to detect when a vehicle is on an incline. The hill start assist maintains the brake pressure for a set period of time as you switch from the brakes to the gas pedal. Once you press the accelerator, it releases the brake.  In cars with a manual transmission that has this feature, the hill start assist will also maintain brake pressure until the driver lets up on the clutch.

Hill Start Assist working

How to make Hill Start Assist work?

Continue to approach and drive up includes such as hills as you normally would. When stopping on an incline, such as at a stop light, hold the brake using the same pressure as you normally would. As you shift your foot away from the brake pedal momentarily, the car should remain stopped instead of rolling back slightly.

We have simplified it for you in three steps:

1) STOP ON A SLOPE

Come to a complete stop on an incline, such as a hill.

2) HOLD THE BRAKE

Continue to hold the brake as you remain stopped.

3) SWITCH PEDALS

Hill-start assist holds the brake for you while you switch your foot away from the brake pedal to begin driving again.

Tip: Be sure to be aware of your surrounding while attempting the hill start assist.

Things to know about Motorcycle Drive Chain and Its Maintenance

23rd December 2020
"Here are some ways to maintain your Drive chain of a motorcycle."

Some of the most critical elements of a motorcycle drive train are chains and sprockets, and their maintenance is a vital aspect of healthy riding. For a very important job, they are used to deliver power from the gearbox to the rear wheel. A defective chain set can cripple your motorcycle, or the condition can even get unsafe occasionally. That implies that we have to take special care of this part, and we need to know about chain maintenance for that. So, here are some ways to maintain your Drive chain of a motorcycle.

Before going for its maintenance, we first need to know about the motorcycle chainset. Most of Nepal's motorcycles have a non-sealed style chain, while some of the luxury models have an O-ring type chain. Compared to the latter, the former one requires a lot of care, and the cause is the O-ring style chain's self-lubricating and cleaning technique. If your motorcycle has a non-sealed form of a chain, for washing, lubricating and wearing, you need to keep a closer eye on it. An O-ring style chain, though, comes with a little o-ring between the chain's rollers and attachment plates, which prevents the grease from locked for a longer period and keeps dirt out.

Inspection

We should inspect and adjust the normal chainset after every run of around 700kms. Place the bike on the main stand such that the rear wheel is free and you can rotate the wheel to check the whole chain. By touching it, you can verify the dryness of the chain and visually check the dirt and dust on it. You will determine, based on the amount of wear and tear, how long the device can continue to operate, or how long it has to be modified immediately.

Cleaning

cleaning

Grease on the chain meets dirt and creates the matter of a gunk form, which appears to build up around the chain and increase its wear. So finally, We need to get this gunk regularly separated from the chain. To clean the non-sealed style chain, we should use a very hard or a wire brush with mild soap, while an o-ring type chain should be washed with a very soft brush. A Quick Solution Grunge brush is indeed a good option for the fast resolution of the target. If you're using soap water to clean the chainset, after cleaning, you need to dry the chain properly with a cloth or blower.

Lubing

lubing

We need to lubricate the chain with fresh grease after washing to making sure the lube goes well inside any pin and roller. When turning the rear wheel forward, you should apply grease on the inner side of the chain, which will ensure the proper lubing of the system. After that, using a towel, you can remove excess lube from it so it won't absorb any dust and dirt. You should also use a chain lubricating spray for the job if you want to make the operation smoother. After cleaning and lubricating your motorcycle's chainset, you can feel the smoothness of the power transmission.

Replacing

Even after cleaning and lubing. If your chain is still not functioning properly then, there is no other option than to replace the old motorcycle chain with a new one. Excessive tension or low tension may damage your new chain-set, so it should be balanced properly. After getting it replaced, take a test ride first and ensure that the tension in the chain is proper and power delivery is happening smoothly.
