5 hacks to improve fuel efficiency of your car

30th August 2020
"Don't be cruel, conserve your Fuel"

One big concern that people have when looking for a vehicle is the fuel efficiency of any vehicle that might be on the list of options. Of course, it might not be time for your family to purchase a new vehicle yet, or you may have just purchased a vehicle with great fuel mileage, but are looking to increase it just a little more. The more efficient your vehicle is, the more money you save at the pump. It’s a win-win scenario!

Here are a few tips for maximizing your fuel efficiency without investing anything extra.

Plan a trip and share a ride

You can combine all your trips to accomplish some task out of the home. Make a list and plan your ride of destinations for yourself or your family member that will be covered in one trip and save you from extra mile ride. Sharing a ride is great solutions to lower your car's emissions. These types of planning will save you money as well as time.

Speed control

Strange as it may seem, steady and smooth driving can help you save up to 20% of fuel. Try to avoid quick acceleration from the stop light and fast-breaking. Experts advise you to imagine you have an egg under your foot when accelerating, to maintain the light and steady pressure. Our first tip for getting that MPGs up is to not speed your car. Speeding is, first of all, illegal, and secondly, it can bring your MPGs down drastically. When you are speeding, you’re accelerating a lot more than you normally would be which is a waste of fuel. To combat this, don’t speed!

Stop the engine when the car is inactive

The fuel could be saved by shutting off the engine but people often don't shut the engine. When you are at a red light or if you pull off the road to make a call, turn off the engine. Restarting needs about the same amount of fuel as 30 seconds of idling, so it makes sense to shut off the engine when your stop lasts longer. Idling for one minute uses the same amount of gas as it takes to start your car in the first place, and it creates a lot more exhaust.

Park in shade/ cooler place

When you’re out in the warmer months, try to park your car in the shade i.e cooler place. Not only does this make your vehicle more comfortable, but it minimizes the evaporation of fuel in your tank from the heat and leaves you with more fuel to use while driving.

Keep your car light as much as possible

Minimize the weight of your vehicle and the unnecessary burden from vehicle storage. Clean out your vehicle and get rid of things in it that might be weighing you down. If you have roof storage, like a box which will increase the acceleration of your car while on the drive, therefore consider making room for those items in your vehicle or switching to a rear-mounted box to reduce drag caused by that extra stuff, With a cargo box on the back, your fuel efficiency is saved and so is your money!

Regular maintenance of your cars

Keeping your vehicle in best condition is also incredibly important. Your tires should be properly inflated and your alignment should be perfect at all times. Regular inspections of tire rotations and alignment checks are essential in maintaining good fuel economy. When your tires are properly inflated, the amount of drag that your engine has to work through is reduced. When it’s time for you to get new tires, ask for low rolling resistance tires to help your engine even more.

Some of the side hacks that might not drastically show the result but these things might be considered to increase the value of money you pay on your fuel is by buying fuel early in the morning during hot seasons because fuel is cooler and denser in the early morning. As the temperature rises during the day, the fuel expands, its density decreases, and you get less of it for the money you pay. You won’t increase your mileage from 20 to 70, but if you do these things then you’ll hopefully see an increase of a few more Kilometres per litre.

Tips to Save Petrol in Bike | Minimize Fuel Consumption

20th October 2019
"Minimizing the petrol consumption is one of the major tricks to all the bike riders."

Bike and petrol are two parts of the same coin. The bike enthusiasts purchase a bike to travel up to their destination but petrol plays a huge part in their life. Minimizing the petrol consumption is one of the major tricks to all the bike riders.

Today we shall provide you with the tips to minimize petrol consumption for the bike.

Maintain Carburetor and filter of bike

The carburetor and filter should be regularly monitored and maintained. The dirt and dust around the city seem to collect around the carburetor passing the filter which obstructs the regular flow of petrol to the engine. This results in overconsumption of petrol in the bikes.

Carburetor-and-filter

Kill your engine when the bike is stationary

There are times such as traffic jams, traffic light, and important phone calls at which your bike need to be stopped. In such situations, it is better to put your bike in neutral and kill the switch. Even the motionless bike engine consumes petrol which can now be controlled.

Clutch, Brakes, and Gear

We understand the necessity of clutch, brakes, and gear in a heavily crowded city like Kathmandu. All three parts must be used at all times. The clutch needs to be pressed to avoid the killing of the engine in a jam where you constantly need to brake and gear down to the lowest gear. Such activities consume more petrol than necessary. Hence, minimizing such usage when you can make a big difference in your consumption of petrol and a fat wallet.

Clutch-Brakes-Gear

Avoid parking your bike under direct sun

Petrol is a substance that evaporates fast even if you keep it in a vessel. When you park your bike under the direct sun, the heat evaporates the petrol at a fast rate. Therefore, try to avoid parking your bike when there is no shade above it.

Tire Pressure

The tire pressure should also be regularly monitored. The pressure must be approximate as per the bikes tire type and capacity which is mentioned in the brochures. If the pressure tends to be high or low than required, the bike cannot give its best performance and consumes more petrol to provide the optimum show.

How messaging technology is helping fuel global protests

6th June 2020
"Protesters are using a variety of technology tools to organize rallies, record police violence and communicate during the marches sweeping the U.S. and other countries following the death of George Floyd."

When a friend shared a Facebook post with Michelle Burris inviting her to protest in downtown Washington, D.C., last Saturday, she knew she had to go. So she bought a Black Lives Matter mask from a street vendor before marching the streets of the district with a “No Justice, No Peace” sign.

After that march ended, she pulled up details on Instagram for a car caravan demonstration just a few blocks away. “It was extremely powerful, not only Facebook but Instagram,” Burris said. “It was very easy to mobilize.”

Protesters are using a variety of technology tools to organize rallies, record police violence and communicate during the marches sweeping the U.S. and other countries following the death of George Floyd. Some of that involves secure messaging services like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram, which can encrypt messages to thwart spies. Those apps, along with others for listening to police scanners and recording video, are enjoying an uptick in popularity.

But experts say convenience and reach are key. “Reaching as many people as possible is the number one criterion for which platform someone is going to use,” said Steve Jones, a University of Illinois at Chicago media researcher who studies communication technology.

That means Twitter, Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram remain the easiest ways for people to organize and document the mass protests. Facebook’s tools remain popular despite a barrage of criticism over the platform’s inaction after President Donald Trump posted a message that suggested protesters in Minneapolis could be shot.

“I don’t want to support or be a part of something that is possibly supporting Trump and his racist, hate filed spew,” said Sarah Wildman, who’s been to three protests in Atlanta and has used Instagram exclusively to locate and to document the demonstrations she attended. But she said she feels that, at this point, “the benefits of Instagram outweigh not using it.”

Half a century ago during the civil rights protests, Jones said, it was almost impossible to know what was going on during a protest. “There was a lot of rumor, a lot of hearsay,” he said. “Now you can reach everyone almost instantaneously.”

Wildman said she uses Instagram’s “live” function to find out what is happening during protests, especially when protesters in the back might not know what’s happening at the front. At one, she said, people started yelling that police were using tear gas — but it wasn’t true, which she learned by checking Instagram.

Organizers are also using Telegram, an app that allows private messages to be sent to thousands of people at once, creating channels for specific cities to give updates on protest times and locations, as well as updates on where police are making arrests or staging. One New York City Telegram channel for the protests grew from just under 300 subscribers on Monday to nearly 2,500 by Friday.

During a peaceful rally in Providence, Rhode Island, on Friday, Anjel Newmann, 32, said that while she’s mostly using Instagram and Facebook to organize, younger people are using Snapchat. The main problem: It’s hard to tell which online flyers are legitimate. “That’s one of the things we haven’t figured out yet,” she said. “There was a flyer going around saying this was canceled today.”

The simplicity of shooting and sharing video has also made possible recordings of violence that can spread to millions within moments. A smartphone video of Floyd’s death helped spark the broad outrage that led to the protests.

Apps like Signal are seeing an uptick in downloads according to Apptopia, which tracks such data. Signal was downloaded 37,000 times over the weekend in the U.S., it said, more than at any other point since it launched in 2014. Other private messaging apps, such as Telegram and Wickr, have not seen a similar uptick.

One new user is Toby Anderson, 30, who also attended the Providence rally on Friday. Anderson, who is biracial, said he downloaded the encrypted Signal app several days earlier at the request of his mom. “She’s a black woman in America,” he said, worried about his safety and eager to grasp any additional measure of security she could.

Meanwhile, apps like Police Scanner and 5-0 Police Scanner, which allow anyone to listen to live police dispatch chatter — and may be illegal in some states — racked up 213,000 downloads over the weekend, Apptopia said. That is 125% more than the weekend before and a record for the category. Citizen, which sends real-time alerts and lets users post live video of protests and crime scenes, was downloaded 49,000 times.

On the down side, the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism said in a blog post this week that it has found white nationalists using Telegram to try to wreak havoc during the protests.

“Some, especially those in the accelerationist camp, are celebrating the prospect of increased violence, which they hope will lead to a long-promised ‘race war,’” the ADL said Monday. “They are extremely active online, urging other white supremacists to take full advantage of the moment.”

In one Telegram channel, the ADL found, participants suggested murdering protesters, then spreading rumors to blame the deaths on police snipers.

Others want to further exacerbate racial tensions. “Good time to stroke race relations” and “post-black live’s don’t matter stickers,” a user posted — with misspellings — to the Reformthestates Telegram channel, according to the ADL.

Petrol vs Diesel car: 5 things to look before you choose

29th August 2020
"Choosing petrol or diesel engine car is one of the first decisions you’ll have to make before buying a new car"

After being in a position to buy your own car, choosing a petrol or diesel engine car is one of the first decisions you’ll have to make before buying a new car. From a financial perspective, there’s now less and less difference between petrol and a diesel car. It is still true that if you look at pure fuel running costs, diesel will cost less. You will, though, have to have high annual mileages and use motorways more often to get the financial benefits.

This is because newer diesel vehicles now have higher tax, which can cost almost as much as the fuel savings you could make in a year, and there are also concerns over air pollution caused by diesel. That means that if most of your journeys are local and your mileage is lower, a small petrol car might be more suitable for you, especially if you’re looking to change vehicles in the next five years.

Here are some points to compare petrol vs diesel cars:

Cost of Petrol Vs Diesel Car

The diesel variant of cars cost more than the petrol variant. A diesel engine needs to maintain a higher compression ratio and handle greater vibration than the petrol engine, so the construction of the diesel engine is more rugged and are costly than the petrol engine. For example, cars which cost less than 10 Lakhs, the showroom price between diesel and petrol variants differs from 2 to 2.5 Lakhs. The difference in the on-road price of petrol and diesel car variants will be even more. This higher initial cost has a major significance in the overall economics of choosing a model and depending on the cost of the vehicle and where it is purchased.

Mileage of Petrol vs Diesel

Diesel engines tend to return more kilometres per litre than a similarly sized petrol motor.so we can say the mileage of the diesel engine is more than that of a Petrol engine. This factor tends to be the sole reason the majority of us tend to go for a diesel variant.  A diesel engine does not need a spark plug and thus has higher compression. This makes the diesel engine utilise more fuel as compared to a petrol engine. The better mileage of a diesel engine makes it easy to cover the extra cost of the car paid initially, but with the increasing cost of cars, the time required to recover this cost has increased.

Smooth Drive

Apart from a fact that diesel engines are more powerful than petrol engines, they also have higher torque and hence they give a smoother drive. On the other hand, the harshness, noise, and vibrations in diesel-driven cars are way higher than that of a petrol-driven car which is a big reason for concern. In petrol engines, the power developed is low due to compression ratio whereas, in diesel engines, the power is more.

Maintenance Cost of Petrol vs Diesel Car

The maintenance cost of diesel cars is higher than petrol cars. This is because consumables like engine oil and spares used in diesel vehicles are more expensive. Also, keep in mind that newer diesel has a special filter fitted to help prevent pollution. It’s called a diesel particulate filter (DPF). These can clog if the vehicle isn’t used regularly on a motorway, and is costly to fix or replace. This means if you don’t use motorways often, a diesel might not be for you. The resale value of a used diesel car is higher than that of a petrol car. However, the life of a petrol engine is more than a diesel engine.

The price difference between Petrol vs Diesel

Since last one year, the prices of diesel and petrol have seen a big hike in Nepal. Fluctuation in price shows that the difference between both is reducing day by day, the difference in both is about 14 Rs per litre and is further decreasing day by day. The lower diesel price is a reality, with the price difference between a litre of petrol and diesel generally hovering 14 rupees. However in the long run, if you have to drive for a longer distance in a smaller span of time choosing Diesel engine car will be more beneficial.

Choice, it’s a personal thing

In the end, it's not possible to say which is better, petrol or diesel engines, because it's very much a case-by-case, or car-by-car thing, and it also comes down to personal preference. Some people just can't stand the sound that diesel engines make, particularly under strain, so they'll never buy one. Although some high-end brands, now make diesel that are so quiet you can barely tell which engine you're driving without putting the windows down.

Besides that, there are now many alternatives to petrol and diesel cars. Technological advances are beginning to make alternative energy vehicles a realistic alternative to petrol and diesel ones. With hybrid, electric, hydrogen fuel cell and LPG powered vehicles, there’s more choice than ever, some opportunities to save money, and there are of course significant environmental advantages to using this kind of vehicles.
