What are the features of Android 12?

18th March 2021
"Easier Wi-Fi sharing, More screenshot markup options, and many more!"

Android has been running billions of mobile phones around the world as the world's most common smartphone operating system. As a result, millions of users may be affected by even the slightest of OS updates. However, it's unclear if those changes actually improve because of the way Android updates are supplied. Nevertheless, we look forward to the next new Android update with the expectation that it will bring about positive improvements.

Confirmed Android 12 features

Simple sharing of Wi-Fi

On Android 11 you can conveniently build a QR code if you would like to share your current Wi-Fi link with others. In Android 12, however, you can avoid scanning a bar code and simply press the "Nearby" button in the image below the QR code. This would use the Nearby Share function of Android to relay the Wi-Fi credentials to everyone.
These newer features help you to exchange link details with several users without handing over your phone for others to check because scanning the QR code is pretty simple.

Screenshot choices

If you take a screenshot with a pixel unit, you can easily label it with software like a paintbrush. However, with Android 12 you can apply the same tool to your Screenshots with email, Emoji, and stickers. This is not a revolutionary move, but it may keep people from having to do the same thing for the third-party application.

Themes based on the wallpaper

A developer has turned on Android 12's speculated wallpaper-based theming system. The feature, which was first speculated in late January, uses the wallpaper's dominant color to set the hue of device components. If you use an orange bokeh wallpaper, for example, UI components can take on a peach hue. The colors appear to be added to Android 12's indicator shade, configuration menus, and lock screen, according to screenshots.

Support for AVIF images

On mobile, JPEG's days as the de facto compressed image format are numbered. Android 12 adds support for AVIF, an image format that offers better image quality than JPEG without the file size penalty. The open-source video codec AV1, which was first released with Android 10, is included in the format.

Transcoding compatible media

Despite its increasing success, not all applications follow the HEVC video compression format. Today, Google is preparing to add a transcoding layer to Android 12 that will allow unsupported applications to benefit from video compression as well. Video capture apps that don't support HEVC will now insist that the file be transcoded to AVC, a more widely accessible video encoding format in Android 12.
Google stresses that this is a fix and invites developers to support HEVC in their applications. This feature's output is often heavily influenced by the device's processing ability.

Haptic-coupled audio effect

In Android 12, Google is encouraging developers to merge haptic feedback patterns with audio. The frequency and length of vibrations are dictated by audio signals, giving media replay or warnings a more immersive layer. For instance, a video chatting app could use custom ringtones to recognise the caller by haptic input, or a racing game could mimic rugged terrain,” Google describes.

Improved cookie management

WebView will now allow SameSite cookie behaviors in Android 12. The SameSite attribute helps programmers to choose whether or not a cookie should be restricted to a single website. This update can help Android 12 manage cookies better through the OS and applications. Big Android browsers, for example, also support the attribute.

Improvements in Notifications

The update mechanism in Android 12 will be revamped for improved looks, accessibility, and features. Google is making changes to the drawer and buttons, as well as the transitions and animations.
Also being targeted is responsiveness.

Other Confirmed features

  • Audio with several channels

  • Changes that can be toggled for debugging

  • Hidden selfie camera on Pixel 5

  • Improvements in system variability consistency

  • Larger display interface optimizations

  • Modifications to the immersive mode

  • Restricted access MAC address of Netlink

  • Selection of audio sources is easy.

  • Services in the forefront

  • Settings pages have been somewhat redesigned.

How to text from your computer with Android Messages

5th October 2020
"Google android messages from web."

Google has the ability to text from the web with Android Messages. The feature gives users a lot more flexibility in choosing how and where they can carry on conversations. As long as your Android smartphone is powered on, you can text from a desktop computer or even other mobile devices — including iOS products like an iPad if you just open up Safari. Aside from text, you can also send emoji, stickers, and images over the web.

Using Android Messages on the web requires using Android Messages as your main texting app on your phone. I like it just fine, and Google is clearly planning big things for the future, but if you prefer, say, Samsung’s default messages app or something else, the two don’t work together.

With that out of the way, getting started and setting things up is fairly simple.

Make sure you’ve got the latest version of Android Messages installed on your phone.

Go to messages.android.com on the computer or other device you want to text from. You’ll see a big QR code on the right side of this page.

Open up Android Messages on your smartphone. Tap the icon with three vertical dots at the top and to the far right. You should see a “Messages for web” option inside this menu.

Tap “QR code scanner” and point your phone’s camera at the QR code on your other device. In less than a second, your phone will vibrate, and the two will be linked up. You should notice your conversations show up in the left column of the browser window. Google says that “conversation threads, contacts, and other settings will be encrypted and cached on your browser.”

Note: this doesn’t mean your actual text conversations are encrypted. They’re not.

And that’s it. To make sure you don’t have to repeat the QR process, you can keep your computer paired with your phone by enabling “Remember this computer.” There will probably be a pop-up asking if you want to enable that the first time you use the web version of Messages. If you missed it, just go to the settings menu, which you can access from the web version of Android Messages by clicking on the three-dot icon to the right of “Messages.” (Of course, you shouldn’t turn this on if you’re using a public PC that other people can easily access.)

WHICH BROWSERS WORK WITH ANDROID MESSAGES ON THE WEB?

Chrome
Firefox
Microsoft Edge
Safari

REMOVE A COMPUTER’S ACCESS TO YOUR MESSAGES

If you want to revoke a web browser’s access to your conversations and messaging, you can quickly do so from your Android smartphone. Go back to the “Messages for web” area of Android Messages, and you can choose to sign out of individual computers or all of them with a click.

THERE’S A DARK MODE!

Dark themes can be handy if you find that all an app’s whites and light grays might overload your eyeballs at night. If you want to enable the Messages dark theme on mobile, tap the same icon with three vertical dots and looking for “Choose theme.” You can go with light, dark, or the system default.

On the web app, you’ll find “Enable dark theme” in the menu that you get after clicking on the three-dot icon to the right of “Messages.

KEEP YOUR PHONE POWERED ON

Android Messages on the web can’t work independently of your smartphone. So if your battery dies or if your phone shuts off for any reason, you won’t be able to send any texts from your computer.

DRAG MEDIA INTO THE ANDROID MESSAGES CONVERSATION

Sending a photo from Android Messages on the web is dead simple. You can either use the attachments icon — to the right of emoji and stickers — or just drag and drop media into the conversation window to send an MMS.

Nokia 3.1 Android 10 update now rolling out :How to update

7th October 2020
"Nokia phones should be the fastest to get the Android 10 update but the Nokia 3.1 seems late to the party."

Nokia 3.1 is the latest Android One smartphone from the house of HMD Global to get the Android 10 version. Android One programme has many perks, which nearly all Nokia-branded phones come with, including Android upgrades for about three years. Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 so it has still not hit the end of the road when it comes to Android updates. The Android 10 update is rolling out to units select countries as a part of the first wave, while more markets will be covered later.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nokia 3.1 is now getting the Android 10 update in select markets.

  • The Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 under the Android One programme.

  • HMD Global recently rolled out Android 10 to a series of Nokia phones.

If you own a Nokia 3.1 in one of these markets, you will soon receive the Android 10 update in the first wave: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, or Vietnam. The second-wave countries have not been announced yet, but they mostly will be more mature markets, the ones where Nokia is not relatively aggressive.

Android 10 was released last year so Nokia 3.1 is around a year late to the party. While the Android One programme ensures yearly Android version updates, it is not technically clear what updates these are going to be. Ideally, Nokia 3.1 should be receiving Android 11 as the final nail in the coffin for the software updates on it, but as weird as Google’s Android One programme is, it is never certain. Anyway, it is good news for Nokia 3.1 users.

To update your Nokia 3.1 to Android 10, you should:

  • Go to the Settings app
  • Now, navigate to About phone section
  • Tap on System updates and check for the new software
  • If available, you will need to manually provide authorisation for Android 10 update on your Nokia 3.1

That is all you need to do to update your phone. Make sure your phone is adequately charged and that all your data is backed up before you begin with the update process.
