Video about an AI system that can predict how proteins fold

21st October 2021
"DeepMind’s AlphaFold has succeeded at the ‘Olympics of protein-folding’"

Within any living organism, there are thousands of different proteins, each with its own unique shape. For decades, the exact formation of those shapes has been a pain for scientists to figure out. How exactly does a protein, which starts as a string of amino acids, fold itself into the funky 3D shapes you might recognize from diagrams? AlphaFold, an AI from DeepMind, may have an answer. It can predict, with heretofore unseen accuracy, the shape a protein will take.

AlphaFold was put to the test in a global competition called Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction, or CASP, which DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis calls the “Olympics of protein folding” in a video. During the competition, systems like AlphaFold are given the amino acid strings for proteins with shapes that have already been identified through previous experiments but haven’t been published yet. Judges compare the protein shapes produced by the systems with what they know the shapes should be.

At the end of the competition, AlphaFold had the most accurate predictions of any CASP participant in its 25-year history by a wide margin. Even the predictions that weren’t accurate enough to be considered “competitive” with experimental results were only a few atom-widths off. The complete data still needs to be peer-reviewed and published, but the DeepMind team is excited about the results so far, saying in a blog post that they are “optimistic about the impact AlphaFold can have on biological research and the wider world.”

It can take years in the lab for scientists to identify the shapes of individual proteins. Neural networks like AlphaFold could help speed up biological research and drug development in the future. The AI method isn’t perfect yet, and it won’t be taking over for flesh-and-blood researchers anytime soon, but it could be a major step in the everlasting marathon of scientific advancement. To learn more about AlphaFold and to see a bunch of scientists and engineers getting giddy and fist-pumping over competition results, check out the video below.

LG WASHING MACHINES WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND DIRECT DRIVE MOTOR TECHNOLOGY

22nd April 2022
"LG is expanding the availability of its innovative front-loader washing machines with ThinQ AI powered by the company’s proprietary Direct Drive technology"

LG Electronics (LG) is expanding the availability of its innovative front-loader washing machines with ThinQ AI powered by the company’s proprietary Direct Drive™(DD™) to most European markets by the end of the year. With the benefits of AI DD™ the new washers are able to deliver thorough yet gentle cleaning by determining the weight and fabric characteristics of each load to deliver faster and better laundry results.

LG's AI DD innovation use huge information on twenty thousand snippets of data identified with washer use and applies settings dependent on the volume and sensitivity of the pieces of clothing in each heap of clothing to give the most streamlined washing cycle. This ensures outstandingly clean clothing each time with the additional advantage of a 18 percent decrease in harm to the garments, dragging out the life of each wardrobe.

LG's TurboWash™ 360 feature allows a shorter laundry day without trading off neatness, requiring only 39 minutes to finish a full wash cycle. Furthermore, 3D Multi Spray additionally gets garments clean in less time by shooting planes of water in four unique ways simultaneously for more stain-battling coverage. Clients can spare considerably additional time by blending the LG AI DD clothes washer with LG MiniWash which fits legitimately underneath to make a TWINWash™ system to deal with two loads of clothing at once.

Boasting the toughness and productivity that European consumers demand, LG AI DD washing machines deliver an efficient energy rating of A+++ -50 percent in no small part due to LG’s inverter technology, guaranteed by a 10-year warranty. For additional user convenience, LG AI DD washers can be managed using voice commands from a connected AI speaker as well as controlled and monitored with the ThinQ mobile app.

“The combination of ThinQ AI with LG’s proven Direct Drive technology delivers customer benefits that are more significant than anything in the evolution of washing machines in the past century,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “It is this kind of innovation that is required to win the hearts and minds of European consumers who expect nothing but the best in their home appliances.”

Indian Scientists Develop Battery Technology To Make EVs With 1600 km Battery Range

24th August 2020
"Indian Scientists Develop Battery Technology To Make EVs With 1600 km Battery Range."

According to the research team, this tech could revolutionise the existing multi-billion dollar industries including Electric vehicles, consumer electronics, drone and other products that depend on the usage of a Lithium-Ion battery.

Indian scientists are working on next-gen battery technology to make EVs super-efficient. A joint research team from IIT Bombay and Shiv Nadar University is working on new Lithium battery cells. Researchers claim that the Lithium battery they are working on will have three times more energy density than the conventional Li-ion battery. If the claims of these scientists are valid, then it can revolutionize the electric vehicle industry.

Battery-Production-of-EVs

These new battery cells are based on Lithium-Sulphur (Li-S) chemistry. Not only this, but the Li-S batteries will also be cheaper than the current Li-ion batteries. Besides, the technology developed by scientists would allow the environment-friendly production of these battery cells.

As per the reports, the production of battery cells requires the by-products of petroleum along with agro-waste elements and copolymers such as cardanol and eugenol as cathodic materials. Cardanol is nothing but simply the by-product of cashew nut processing, whereas eugenol is the clove oil.

So basically this technology uses bio-molecules in the form of cathodes for Li-S battery cells. Though this might be a new concept, it promises some great results. If your energy density has increased by three times then it simply means more range for your electric cars.

Bimlesh Lochab, Associate Professor at Shiv Nadar University told PTI, “The capability of three times more energy density, coupled with being a significantly safer technology, holds the promise of accelerating the adoption of clean, battery-led energy across multiple domains.

Professor Lochab explained by giving an example of a car. He said a car with a 400 km range can travel 1600 km on a single charge with this battery technology.

Cars like Tesla depend on Lithium-Ion battery technology so for the future of electrification this could be an important invention.

The new battery technology synthesises a bio-based molecule, capable of commercial-scale production. The research includes a new type of cathode for Li-S batteries, which can help push the promising battery technology to higher performance levels.
