Know about the current emission norm BS-VI
"The BS6 was implemented because of the increasing traffic and deteriorating air quality in India, specifically New Delhi; which had 85 micrograms per cubic meter, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI)."
India amended its emission norms starting April 1, 2020 and announced that all the automobile manufacturers should comply with the BS6 norms and regulations. Before BS6, all the manufacturing companies complied with BS4 regulations.
What is BS?
BS is the abbreviation for the word Bharat Stage, it is the standard and timeline for implementation set by the Central Pollution Control Board under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Difference between BS4 and BS6
The main difference between BS4 and BS6 is the number of chemicals in the smoke from both standard engines. The BS-6 engine has significantly reduced the share of chemicals released after burning petroleum in the engine of the vehicle. That is why the new standards have been implemented with the aim of minimizing the spread of such elements that are directly harmful to human health.
The new pollution standards specifically measure four types of chemicals. It sets out the number of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, particulate matter, and carbon dioxide that can be emitted only up to a certain limit per kilometer.
Chemical | Nitrogen Oxide
Emission Norms | BS4 | BS6 |
Petrol | 800mg/km | 60mg/km |
Deisel | 250mg/km | 80mg/km |
Chemical | Hydrocarbon | |
Emission Norms | BS4 | BS6 |
Petrol | 100mg/km | same |
Diesel | 30mg/km | 170mg/km |
Chemical | Particulate Matter
Emission Norms | BS4 | BS6 |
Petrol | NA | 4.5mg/km |
Diesel | 25mg/km | 4.5mg/km |
Chemical | Carbon dioxide |
Emission Norms | BS4/BS6 |
Petrol | same 100mg/km |
Diesel | same 500mg/km |
The hydrocarbon in the petrol engine has been kept in the same margin as BS4, while in the diesel variants, it has been reduced from 300 mg to 170 mg. Particular materials, on the other hand, previously had no parameters in petrol engines. However, BS6 has been made to be only up to 4.5 mg per kilometer.
In diesel, it has been reduced from 25 mg to 4.5 mg like petrol. No change has been made regarding carbon dioxide. Nitrogen oxide is regarded as one of the most harmful chemicals produced by the vehicle, and with the BS6 norms into effect, it reduces the fume by 20 milligrams per kilometer.
The automobile companies are on the verge of switching their diesel variants into petrol as the petrol variants can easily be in compliance with the BS6 norms. Companies like Maruti Suzuki have already cut the Diesel Variants of Vitara Brezza and produce only petrol variants.
BS6 in Nepal
Nepal Government is currently implementing Nepal Pollution Standard-3, and since most of the cars in Nepal are manufactured in India, all the BS6 models will be available in Nepal too.
The BS6 was implemented because of the increasing traffic and deteriorating air quality in India, specifically New Delhi; which had 85 micrograms per cubic meter, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI). According to them, 85 micrograms per cubic meter is a moderate quality, which means that the air quality is acceptable, however, some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
In Kathmandu, the air quality index is 53 micrograms per cubic meter which is also moderate. However, the stats show that Kathmandu is not as polluted as Delhi.
Is switching to BS6 the ultimate solution for no environmental pollution?
The BS6 standard emission and compliance engine alone is not the solution to environmental pollution. Gasoline also plays a major factor in pollution control. Therefore, the fuel should also comply with the norms of the BS6 standard.
The petroleum and diesel products imported to Nepal have also adhered to the BS6 standard. Fuel generally contains sulfur and lead. The blending of such chemicals in BS6 standard fuel has been reduced.
