Dish Home: Strings | Music Evolution
"The emotions and ideas that music expresses, the events in which music is played and listened to, and the outlooks toward music players and composers all vary between regions and eras. "
In every known culture and religion, past and present, varying widely between times and places, music has been present. Consequently, the first music may have been invented in Africa and then evolved to become a fundamental component of human life. The emotions and ideas that music expresses, the events in which music is played and listened to, and the outlooks toward music players and composers all vary between regions and eras.
The first half of the 70s was a highly creative and virtuous age marked by the excellence in use of instruments like the guitar, drums, bass, and keyboards. Music listeners had dozens of genres to choose from and many of them rose to popularity at different points during the decade. Genres like rock and symphonic rock came up then, and they blended the complexity of classical composition with experimentalism and rock. There was Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, Van Der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd, Supertramp to name a few. The second half of the 70s saw the birth and rise of Disco Sound, as a form of musical fast food that contrasted with the virtuous Rock of the first half.
But this derived into some funk and New Wave dance bands from the early 80s. The melodies were still quite creative and experimental and music had heart. All the revivalist tendencies will keep going back to the 70s and 80s because the music simply had quality and heart. It touched and still touches the soul in a way only one can experience. The 80s themselves were perhaps the most diverse years. All genres had identical strong emphasis. There was something for everyone! As Frankie Goes to Hollywood song says: “Where everything has its place, and there’s a place for everything”.
There were Hard-Rock/Metal bands that ranged from Iron Maiden to Van Halen. Punk and post-punk bands like Discharge, Crass, Dead Kennedies, Sex Pistols, Clash, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy were going strong. Superstars like Michael Jackson, Prince, Bowie, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen were popular. New Age music also known as impressionistic music designed to help create relaxation and a meditative spirit, rose sharply in popularity in late 80s. The 80s were rich in diversity as the 70s were rich in virtuosity. It seems like almost every song ever made in the 80s had a 70s sample in it.
The 90s was a return to Rock and instruments of the 70s. There was a predominance of hard rock and a raw sound. Music was all about heavy rock and metal. But like in the 70s at the same time, there was an electronic dance scene going on and we started to see the Rave and Trance parties, DJs like Carl Cox, Sven Vath, Aphex Twin to name a few. Famous Bands like Chemical Brothers, Fat Boy Slim, The Prodigy were doing well. It was clearly not as diverse as the 80s but, the 90s also had a lot of fabulous creativity. The music got very interesting and became the basis for what most music sounds like today. By mid 90s, many music stores sold CDs.
As we see the golden era in music history, live bands and music with heart touching lyrics were most favored by everyone. Even though taste in music have changed, people still prefer listening to the old music as they have always had a simple message and really catchy because adding too much art in YouTube videos were not a thing back then, making it almost universally acclaimed.
