Next version of Windows 11 leak reveals new UI

16th June 2021
"The next version of Windows has leaked online,Microsoft has centered the app icons here, cleaned up the tray area, and included a new Start button and menu."

After screenshots were first published at Chinese site Baidu, the entire Windows 11 OS has appeared online, complete with a new user interface, Start menu, and lots more.

Microsoft had been simplifying Windows for dual-screen devices, before canceling this project in favor of Windows 11. Visually, the biggest changes can be found along the taskbar. Microsoft has centered the app icons here, cleaned up the tray area, and included a new Start button and menu.

Windows 11 OS leaks

A new icon in the Windows 11 taskbar, and it’s labeled Widgets in the operating system. Rumors have suggested Microsoft is bringing back Windows Widgets, and this early version appears to include some.

Windows 11 also includes new snap controls that you can access from the maximize button on all apps. They’re modern equivalents of the cascade windows function that has existed in the operating system for years.

Microsoft is reportedly overhauling its Windows app store to allow developers to submit any Windows application, including browsers like Chrome or Firefox. Microsoft may also be considering allowing third-party commerce platforms in apps, allowing developers to avoid the cut Microsoft usually takes from in-app purchase systems.

The Microsoft is holding a special Windows event to reveal its next OS on June 24th. The event starts at 11AM ET, and the event invite includes a window that creates a shadow with an outline that looks like the number 11.

Microsoft to retire Internet Explorer by 2022

23rd May 2021
"Microsoft announced last week that it will retire the Internet Explorer web browser on June 15, 2022. Launched in 1995"

Microsoft announced last week that it will retire the Internet Explorer web browser on June 15, 2022. Launched in 1995, Internet Explorer was the dominant browser on Windows PCs for years until options such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers came along.

The tech giant has said that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. The end of Internet Explorer has been expected for quite some time, particularly ever since Microsoft killed off the brand in 2015 with the launch of its modern web browser, Microsoft Edge.

In 2019, Microsoft labeled Internet Explorer a “compatibility solution” rather than a browser and encouraged businesses to stop using the aging browser in favor of Edge and its IE mode. Last year, the tech giant ended support for Internet Explorer 11 for the Microsoft Teams web app and announced plans to shut down Internet Explorer by August 2021.

When Windows introduced Explorer in 1995, its success killed off the once-leading Netscape Navigator. At its height in the early 2000s, Explorer controlled 95% of the browser market.

At 25 years old, the much-reviled web browser that once dominated the Internet couldn't shake its reputation as the slow, buggy net-surfing option.
