Counter Steering a Motorcycle Safely and Correctly
"Counter steering is the strategy you use to create that lean, whether intentionally or unconsciously."
The notion (ruled by physics!) that to turn a moving motorcycle in a given direction, the rider must turn the handlebar in the opposite direction of the turn is known as 'counter-steering.' Counter steering is the strategy you use to create that lean, whether intentionally or unconsciously.
To put it another way, you steer left to lean right and vice versa. To completely grasp the theory, you must first grasp the concepts of camber thrust, roll angle, and centripetal force.
To ride, though, all you need is a basic understanding of the technique.
Counter steering on a crowded highway
The problem is induced by stress in the first scenario. You find yourself in a frightening scenario, and panic sets in.
As a result, instead of your body performing what it knows naturally, your brain tries to take control.
"Turn away!" it exclaims. It then instructs your arms to turn the handlebar away from the truck, bringing your motorcycle closer to it.
Counter steering on a winding country road
If you're having difficulties getting your bike to do what you want it to do on twisting roads, it's likely because you're not counter steering effectively.
It's fairly common – 'not making the turn' and drifting off the side of the road is the cause of many accidents. So excellent technique is about having fun, being in charge, and being safe.
It's really that easy – so easy that you'll kick yourself for not figuring it out sooner: push left, go left; push right, go right.
Rather than battling the curves and attempting to muscle your way through them, go with the flow! By pushing the handlebar into the turn, you can use the natural forces of physics to your advantage.
