How to prevent air sickness on the plane

4th February 2022
"Traveling by air isn't always easy, whether you're a frequent flyer or planning your first trip."

Traveling by air isn't always easy, whether you're a frequent flyer or planning your first trip. When flying, airsickness can be a serious issue for some people. Don't let your fear of motion sickness keep you from going on the trips you've always wanted to go on.

Here are some tips for avoiding air sickness:

Choose your seat strategically

Because you'll be flying through air currents, the ride will be a little bumpy.

However, some seats may be bumpier than others. Select a seat between the plane's wings or closer to the plane's front, where the ride is more stable.

Avoid sitting in the plane's back row.

Try to relax

Anxiety and stress worsen motion sickness and extend its duration.

Consider learning meditation or deep-breathing exercises to help you relax before and during your flight if you have a fear of flying.

If you've never flown before, speak with someone who has so you can understand the normal sounds and movements of an airplane and not be scared when you hear them for the first time.

Watch What You Eat Before Your Flight

Eat light the night before and the day of your flight, and bring crackers or other bland snacks with you to the airport in case your stomach gets upset.

Avoid greasy and spicy foods, and limit your salt intake because flights can dehydrate you.

Avoid digital screens and reading

Reading, whether from a book, a magazine, or a digital device, can cause or worsen motion sickness.

If you prefer not to read, listen to an audiobook with headphones instead.

Avoiding tense thrillers, mystery novels, and anything that involves flying may also help you relax.

Use the Air Vents

When you're experiencing motion sickness in a confined space, such as an airplane seat, direct airflow can make all the difference.

In times of nausea or distress, look to the air vent above your seat for some relief.

Airbus unveils concepts for hydrogen-powered plane

21st September 2020
"It is the planemaker’s latest effort to draw public attention to its “zero-emission” ambitions"

It is the planemaker’s latest effort to draw public attention to its “zero-emission” ambitions as European governments push for cleaner technology in their post-COVID recovery plans.

Airbus AIR.PA has set itself a deadline of 2035 to put a carbon-free commercial aircraft into service, a target engine makers like Safran SAF.PA have described as ambitious.

The “ZEROe” initiative includes concepts for two conventional-looking aircraft: a turbofan jet engine able to carry 120-200 people over 2,000 nautical miles (3,700 km) and a turboprop able to carry up to 100 people for 1,000 nm.

Unlike normal planes, the engines would be adapted to burn liquid hydrogen stored in the rear fuselage.

A third proposal incorporates a revolutionary “blended wing body” design similar to one presented in February.

At the same time, Airbus is working on a demonstrator, with initial results expected in 2021.

The demonstrator will allow us to assess what the most promising architecture is,” Airbus Chief Technology Officer Grazia Vittadini said in an interview.

“We see it as applicable to all Airbus products eventually.

To meet its 2035 goal, Airbus would need to select technologies by 2025, she said. Other industry executives said such a clean break in propulsion could take until 2040.

Challenges include finding ways to safely store volatile liquid hydrogen during flight at very cold temperatures.

Airbus dismissed concerns that hydrogen would be unsafe and has called for massive investment in new energy infrastructure.

While hydrogen has been discussed since the 1970s, it remains too expensive for widespread use. Proponents say infrastructure investment and rising demand will lower the cost.

Most hydrogen used today is extracted from natural gas, which creates carbon emissions.

However, Airbus said the hydrogen used for aviation would be produced from renewable energy and extracted from water with electrolysis. That’s a carbon-free process is powered by renewable electricity, but it is currently more expensive.
