Internet bandwidth consumption rose by 30% following the prohibitory order

30th April 2021
"During the lockdown period last year, the consumption of the internet has risen to 50% and most bandwidths were dedicated to TikTok"

Internet bandwidth consumption has increased by 30% than usual in different cities of Nepal including Kathmandu.

According to ISPAN, an internet service provider due to the maximum number of people staying in homes following the prohibitory order use of internet use escalated exponentially.

The general public has had to depend mostly on the internet to kill time while they are stuck at home.

Normally on a daily basis bandwidth consumption is 900 to 1000 GBPS, currently, the consumption has risen to 1000 to 1250 GBPS.

Also, the highest internet consumption normally occurs between 6 pm to 10 pm, now the ratio is pretty much the same across the day.

During the lockdown period last year, the consumption of the internet has risen to 50% and most bandwidths were dedicated to TikTok

According to NTA's data between 2076 Chaitra to Magh of 2077; 37,67,000 internet subscribers were added.

Before the first lockdown in Falgun of 2076, the total number of internet subscribers was 2,18,52,000, now the number has reached 2,54,19,000.

The number of people choosing mobile broadband increased in the last year, according to experts 'work from home' trend due to pandemic resulted in the growing number of internet consumers.

If the internet is not repaired within 24 hours, service fee should be waived

18th July 2020
"If the internet is not repaired within 24 hours, service fee should be waived"

If the internet service provider does not repair the blocked service in time, the customer has to give a discount on the service charge. The regulator Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has implemented the new provision by issuing regulations related to the operation of internet services.

According to the new arrangement, the internet service provider company will have to enter into an agreement with its customer on the condition of providing 24-hour service. If the Internet and email services are blocked, repairs must be made within 24 hours of receiving the notification.

If the repair cannot be done within the stipulated time, the service fee waiver should be given to the customer for the period of non-repair. The company will have to bear the cost of operating the blocked service.

In addition, if the service is disrupted due to technical reasons or maintenance, the service provider has to inform the customer three days in advance. If the service provider fails to provide the service as per the condition, a complaint can be lodged with the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.

The regulations have been passed by the board meeting of the Telecommunication Authority of Nepal, which is the regulatory body of the telecommunications sector, and have been implemented.
