Nokia wins Chunghwa Telecom 5G small cells deal in Taiwan

12th October 2020
"Nokia’s innovative and cost-effective small cells solutions extend 5G coverage and add capacity to indoor residential and small enterprise networks."

Nokia today announced that it will provide Taiwanese mobile operator, Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) with a range of products from its innovative small cells portfolio to support CHT’s initiative to deliver comprehensive 5G coverage. CHT is the first operator in Taiwan to deploy a 5G non-standalone (NSA) small cells solution enabling instant 5G coverage in specific areas such as business as well as tourist districts. Nokia has already commenced deployment and has installed 140 5G small cells to date.

Nokia has been a long-term partner of CHT, since the 2G era. The deal will see Nokia supply CHT with its flexible AirScale indoor Radio (ASiR) solution for better indoor coverage and capacity, as well as its AirScale micro RRH for outdoor and urban hot spots. These will be deployed to complement the existing base of over 2,500 sets of 4G small cells.

Nokia’s 5G small cells portfolio is quick to install and enables operators to address 5G network densification and indoor coverage requirements. With enterprise being a key 5G market CHT is working closely with local small to medium-size enterprises to provide secure 5G coverage to enable industry 4.0 automation. Approximately 80 per cent of mobile sessions are initiated indoors from homes and businesses and high-quality indoor 5G coverage is pivotal to ensuring a good end-user experience.

Nokia’s industry-leading portfolio of residential and small-medium enterprise small cells caters to the full range of consumer and enterprise requirements. Several analyst companies have named Nokia as a market leader. Recently, GlobalData ranked Nokia as the leading small cells vendor in its competitive assessment, published in July 2020.

Nokia post 116 Million Euros profit in first-quarter 2020

30th April 2020
"Finland-based telecommunications company Nokia on Thursday reported a profit of 116 million euros in Q1 2020"

Finland-based telecommunications company Nokia on Thursday reported a profit of 116 million euros in Q1 2020,  reversing the 59 million loss in Q1 2019. Its turnover of 4.9 billion euros in the quarter, however, was slightly less than the same period of last year.

The company's CEO Rajeev Suri noted that Nokia did not see a decline in product demand in the first quarter. Nokia has noted a massive increase in network capacity demands. According to Suri, the reduction caused by the COVID-19 crisis in Q1 turnover was 200 million euros.

Suri said the sector is "not immune to the crisis," but believed it will endure it rather well. Finnish business daily Kauppalehti said Nokia exceeded analysts' expectations as they had been predicting 102 million profit. However, Nokia warned its 2020 total result will fall slightly behind earlier expectations.

For the whole year, Nokia now expects a profit margin of 9 percent, which is 0.5 percent less than the estimate in January. Nokia acknowledged that supply and delivery challenges in some countries may be encountered and customers could alter spending. Nokia said the improved result was attributed mainly to the mobile access business in the networks business and higher margins in Nokia Software.

Higher costs in the 5G research impacted the result. Nokia said 5G deal momentum continues, with 70 commercial deals and 21 live networks. However, Suri told Kauppalehti that Nokia is waiting for the result in a tender for China Unicom's network project."I am confident that we will win the agreement from China Unicom, although we have not received any official announcement," Suri told the media in a phone call after the company's Q1 earnings announcement. Kristian Pullola, the chief financial officer of Nokia, also said on Thursday that Nokia remains committed to China. "We are a long term actor there," he told Kauppalehti.

Nokia 3.1 Android 10 update now rolling out :How to update

7th October 2020
"Nokia phones should be the fastest to get the Android 10 update but the Nokia 3.1 seems late to the party."

Nokia 3.1 is the latest Android One smartphone from the house of HMD Global to get the Android 10 version. Android One programme has many perks, which nearly all Nokia-branded phones come with, including Android upgrades for about three years. Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 so it has still not hit the end of the road when it comes to Android updates. The Android 10 update is rolling out to units select countries as a part of the first wave, while more markets will be covered later.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nokia 3.1 is now getting the Android 10 update in select markets.

  • The Nokia 3.1 was launched in 2018 under the Android One programme.

  • HMD Global recently rolled out Android 10 to a series of Nokia phones.

If you own a Nokia 3.1 in one of these markets, you will soon receive the Android 10 update in the first wave: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, or Vietnam. The second-wave countries have not been announced yet, but they mostly will be more mature markets, the ones where Nokia is not relatively aggressive.

Android 10 was released last year so Nokia 3.1 is around a year late to the party. While the Android One programme ensures yearly Android version updates, it is not technically clear what updates these are going to be. Ideally, Nokia 3.1 should be receiving Android 11 as the final nail in the coffin for the software updates on it, but as weird as Google’s Android One programme is, it is never certain. Anyway, it is good news for Nokia 3.1 users.

To update your Nokia 3.1 to Android 10, you should:

  • Go to the Settings app
  • Now, navigate to About phone section
  • Tap on System updates and check for the new software
  • If available, you will need to manually provide authorisation for Android 10 update on your Nokia 3.1

That is all you need to do to update your phone. Make sure your phone is adequately charged and that all your data is backed up before you begin with the update process.
