Tesla Extends Supercharger Network in China to Mount Everest

3rd May 2021
"Although not on the actual summit of the world's highest peak, the Tesla supercharger is the only EV charger this close to Mt. Everest"

Although not on the actual summit of the world's highest peak, the Tesla supercharger is the only EV charger this close to Mt. Everest.

According to a recent report, Tesla has established 11 new Supercharger stations throughout China, one of which is located in Tingri, Tibet, on the route from Chengdu or Xi'an all the way to Mt Everest's base camp. The Supercharger is located in the parking lot of the Roof of the World Hotel, at an elevation of nearly 4,300 meters. The small town is about 100 kilometers from Everest base camp. According to reports, the expansion efforts now make it easier for Tesla owners to travel longer distances in China's far reaches.

The new Supercharger stations can be found on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway along two routes. Both routes are more than 2,000 kilometers long.

Furthermore, this highway is regarded as one of the most difficult in the world, as well as the "longest high-altitude road in China." In China, Tesla now has over 700 Supercharger stations. When Tesla posted updates about its expansion efforts in the country in January, it stated that the network in the area had grown by a whopping 30% in less than a month and a half. Chengdu now has 32 charging stations at the start of the new route.

Tesla Starlink beaming Internet with satellite, it is fast, expensive and little unreliable

1st November 2020
"Results of public beta testing of SpaceX’s Starlink, which provides global internet coverage from space are out."

Results of public beta testing of SpaceX’s Starlink, which provides global internet coverage from space are out. Users who took the test have confirmed blazingly fast results. To take the beta test, users had to purchase the Starlink ground equipment for $499 and along with an additional monthly fee of $99 for services.

One of the users, who took the test, posted on Reddit that he got the streaming 1440p and 4K with zero buffering on YouTube. He wrote, “Latency averages about 34ms, I'm seeing some jitter increase when obstacles are in the path. It's on the roof with the ridgeline mount. I have a couple of trees in the way, but getting steady high speeds. Noticed a couple of interruptions, probably from satellite transitions, but almost 100% steady since initial setup.

I actually uploaded this post using Starlink.”

As a few different people are looking for details on this, interruptions are about ten to fifteen seconds and seem to happen every few minutes. I haven't noticed enough repetition to determine, but I'm suspecting it may be when the satellite goes behind the few trees inside the obstruction area rather than satellite handoffs. The app claims Starlink has not been obstructed recently, though, so I'm uncertain,” it added.

Starlink had earlier sent invites to people who had signed for the beta program. A user on Reddit had shared the key points Starlink had mentioned about its Internet plan. As per the post on Reddit, the program called Better Than Nothing Beta offered estimated speeds between 50mbps to 150mbps, estimated latency of 20ms to 40ms. The phased array antenna and the router would cost a user $499 while the monthly subscription would cost around $99.

With performance that far surpasses that of traditional satellite internet, and a global network unbounded by ground infrastructure limitations, Starlink will deliver high-speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable. Starlink is targeting service in the Northern U.S. and Canada in 2020, rapidly expanding to near-global coverage of the populated world by 2021,” the Starlink website reads.

Elon Musk plans new laws for Mars

Musk had revealed his plans of creating self-sustaining cities on Mars. The reports state that future colonies created by SpaceX would use Starlink satellites to provide internet connections to people. Starlink services provided to Earth or Moon will be governed by the laws of the State of California. “For services provided on Mars, or in transit to Mars or other colonization spacecraft, the parties recognize Mars as a free planet and that no Earth-based government has authority or sovereignty over Martian activities,” the governing law states.

Elon Musk teases a Tesla Cybertruck availability update as soon as April

8th March 2021
"Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company could soon have an update about Cybertruck production"

Elon Musk on Saturday teased an update about the availability of Tesla's forthcoming Cybertruck as soon as April.

Elon Musk teases a Tesla Cybertruck availability update as soon as April

"Update probably in Q2. Cybertruck will be built at Giga Texas, so focus right now is on getting that beast built," the CEO said on Twitter in response to a question about the truck's first deliveries.

In January, Musk said the F-150 competitor's engineer was nearly finished and that Tesla would soon begin designing an assembly line to build it.

"We're no longer iterating at the design center level or design level," he said. "We've got the designs fixed. We're getting to -- we'll soon order the equipment necessary to make the Cybertruck work."

Tesla's newest factory near Austin, Texas, is currently under construction, with a completion date set for later in 2021.

The futuristic-looking truck comes at a crucial time for Tesla, which is already beginning to lose ground to competitors. Electric pickups are a crucial hurdle in mass-market battery adoption — and a key profit center for competitors like Ford.

Mercedes takes on Tesla with its flagship electric car

16th April 2021
"Mercedes sales chief Britta Seeger said the launch of the EQS coincides with demand for electric vehicles that is growing faster than company executives once forecast"

Daimler AG unveiled its electric S-Class sedan on Thursday, taking the fight to Tesla Inc as electric car sales soar.

The EQS is the first in a series of Mercedes-Benz cars to be designed entirely on an electric vehicle platform. In August, it will be available in Europe and the United States, with China following in January.

Last year, sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in the European Union nearly tripled to over 1 million, accounting for more than 10% of total sales.

"We set the bar very high," with this car, Daimler Chief Executive Ola Källenius told reporters. "Customers in this segment expect a blend of hi-tech innovation and modern luxury... and that's what we're trying to achieve with the EQS."

Daimler has not revealed pricing yet for the EQS, saying that will come in the summer closer to the launch date.

In interviews and conference calls on Thursday Källenius

avoided making any comparisons with Tesla, whose market cap of more than $700 billion dwarfs all other carmakers.

But with a range of up to 770 kilometers (478 miles) and a new display screen that will cover nearly the whole dashboard - an optional feature - analysts see an effort to seize the initiative from Tesla, which had a head start over other carmakers and boasted a longer battery range and hallmark touchscreen infotainment system.

In a client note earlier this week, Deutsche Bank referred to the EQS as "Mercedes' Tesla fighter" and said the car "will likely set the benchmark in terms of technical features, as well as design and quality," for both traditional carmakers and newer entrants like Tesla.

Källenius said he expects more than 50% of customers will pay extra to get the display screen, which Mercedes-Benz unveiled in January.

At 56 inches (142 cm) the new "Hyperscreen" - which in width dwarfs Tesla's vaunted 17-inch screen - will also feature in Mercedes-Benz's other new electric models.

Källenius said the company would not provide forecasts for how many EQS models it aims to sell, or what sort of profit margins he expected the vehicle to generate.

But he said he had high expectations for the Chinese market, where there is "tremendous demand" for the traditional combustion engine S-Class model.

Daimler now joins rival Volkswagen AG with a dedicated electric platform. BMW will launch a dedicated platform in 2025.

Mercedes sales chief Britta Seeger said the launch of the EQS coincides with demand for electric vehicles that is growing faster than company executives once forecast.

“We thought by 2030 that half of our sales will be electric vehicles” and plug-in hybrid vehicles, Seeger said during a conference call. “What we currently see... is a stronger request of customers for EVs. We are even more positive that this jump can be a little bit faster.”
