Google location-tracking troubled its own engineers

26th August 2020
"Google is seeking to dismiss the lawsuit."

Google’s own engineers were troubled by the way the company secretly tracked the movements of people who didn’t want to be followed until a 2018 Associated Press investigation uncovered the shadowy surveillance, according to unsealed documents in a consumer fraud case.

The behind-the-scenes peek stems from a three-month-old lawsuit against Google filed by Arizona’s attorney general. The files, unsealed late last week, reveal that Google knew it had a massive problem on its hands after an AP article published in August 2018 explained how the company continued to track users’ whereabouts even after they had disabled the feature Google called “location history.

The released documents include internal Google emails and a fresh version of the state’s civil complaint with fewer redactions than the original.

The same day the AP story was published, the company held what one unidentified email correspondent called an “Oh S—-” meeting to discuss its location tracking tools, according to the unsealed records in Arizona’s Maricopa County Superior Court. Google also began monitoring public reaction to the AP story, including how it was trending across Facebook, Twitter and other influential online services, the documents show.

The release of the emails is embarrassing for a company that tries to build trust with billions of users of free services such as maps and online search, which in turn provide the personal information Google can use to target ads. Those ads generated more than $130 billion in revenue last year alone.

Google is still fighting to keep many of the exhibits and key passages in the lawsuit redacted on the grounds that the contents contain confidential information.

Google is seeking to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the Arizona law only applies to goods and services that charge consumers. That would exclude free services that draw upon the tracking tools that are at the heart of the lawsuit.

The company also contends that Brnovich, a Republican, may have been prodded to pursue the investigation by Oracle, which has been involved in a long-running legal battle over the rights to some of the software code used in Google’s Android software for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Privacy controls have long been built into our services and our teams work continuously to discuss and improve them,” Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said Wednesday. “In the case of location information, we’ve heard feedback, and have worked hard to improve our privacy controls.

Google Maps update includes more detailed colorful images

18th August 2020
"Google maps to be more distinguished and detailed to help differentiate streets, crosswalk, pathways, etc."

In addition to helping you find your way, the latest Google Maps update will help you know more details about any given area at a glance. Starting this week, Google will shade maps with colors based on satellite imagery so you can easily tell the difference between forests and beaches. The update will be available worldwide and will cover a variety of natural and manmade features.

While the refined color palette is meant to help you understand regional features, a future update will offer more detail on a much smaller scale. Google says it will roll out more granular info on streets so you can see their exact size at scale in addition to the locations of sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian islands.

The more detailed street images will start rolling out in London, New York and San Francisco in the coming months.

Google announced both changes in a blog post on Tuesday, but didn't offer a timeline on a broader rollout of the more granular view.

The color mapping update will supposedly not just be for large landscape features either. Google will use computer imagery to show more coloration on areas such as cities, suburbs and rural towns.

Samsung Galaxy M51 exterior design leaked

25th August 2020
"Samsung Galaxy M51 phone’s exterior design."

No stone has been left unturned in regards to its specs but truth be told, we haven’t seen much of this phone’s exterior design. There was that unusual Galaxy M51/M41 render that emerged nearly half a year ago but that looks nothing like the Galaxy M51 in light of the recently-leaked specs.

Nevertheless, the moment of truth is finally here as one of the final puzzle pieces has fallen into place. A series of official press renders have leaked on twitter.

Here's your first look at the official press renders of Samsung Galaxy M51 in Black & White colors!
Without any watermark so guys please credit if you use or share them :)#GalaxyM51 pic.twitter.com/OkqLiRyZcw

— Sudhanshu (@Sudhanshu1414) August 24, 2020

These images have given us a complete look at the Galaxy M51 from nearly every angle. The renders depict the Galaxy M51 in two color options, black and white, and reconfirm features such as a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and an L-shaped quad-camera setup on the back panel.

The Galaxy M51 looks very much like the Galaxy A71 indeed, with a few key exceptions. Barring the latter model’s Prism color design, they look nearly identical. And the story is similar on the inside as it turns out that the Galaxy M51 will share a lot of its hardware components with the Galaxy A71, from the chipset to its memory configuration and more than a few camera characteristics.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as we find out more about the Galaxy M51’s launch date and price. An official announcement could be just around the corner, seeing how the device has taken the headlines by storm at the start of the week, so stay tuned.
