WhatsApp to press ahead with reform amid the backlash

21st February 2021
"WhatsApp is moving ahead with significant improvements to its terms of use but changing the way customers are alerted amid a backlash."

The Facebook-owned platform previously said it had been the victim of misinformation around the change. But WhatsApp now says it has reflected on how it could have explained the changes better. The phrasing of the warning in the initial push led to widespread fears that it was going to share large amounts of WhatsApp data with Facebook. In reality, very little had changed in that area. Almost all users had previously accepted the type of data sharing involved. As part of its second attempt to convince users, WhatsApp will begin displaying a banner alert within the app in the coming weeks. It encourages users to learn more about the update and what is - and is not - changing. Messages informing users of the update will also be displayed in the Status section of the app. The new terms are scheduled to come into effect on 15 May.

WhatsApp says the data it shares with its parent company does not include messages, groups, or call logs. Instead, it says the new terms focus on changes to allow users to message businesses.  WhatsApp already shares information with Facebook, such as your IP address and information about your phone, as well as purchases made via the platform.  However, this does not apply in Europe and the UK, where different privacy laws exist.  But privacy experts mention the saga highlights how unaware users are of how their data is being used. In its attempts to demonstrate that it is not doing anything wrong, Whatsapp has in turn unwittingly found out that it is actually storing massive volumes of data for Facebook. That vindicates those who decided to leave Whatsapp, he said.  "The biggest takeaway from all of this is that Whatsapp was already harvesting device level identifiers, IP addresses, and purchase info on behalf of Facebook - and that until recent media attention, the general public was largely unaware."

Whatsapp was focusing on what they could do differently here. They want you to know their experience of defending end-to-end encryption and believe that they are committed to protecting people's privacy and protection. They're still trying to do a lot better to be transparent on developments in the future. In January, government officials in India ordered the networking giant to withdraw the proposed reforms.

Reliance Jio-Facebook Pact: JioMart, WhatsApp to operate together to connect consumers with local kiranas

21st April 2020
"Reliance Jio will receive an investment of INR 43,574 crores from Facebook."

Facebook will buy a 10 per cent stake in the digital business of India's Reliance Industries for INR 43,574 crores, as the social media firm looks to leverage its highly popular WhatsApp chat service to offer digital payment services. The deal will help the Indian conglomerate cut debt that has piled up in its expensive push to secure top spot for its Jio Infocomm telecom business.

WhatsApp is trying to secure approval to roll out its digital payment service in India, which will see it compete in a crowded market with the likes of Google Pay and Paytm. The approval to expand beyond the beta launch hasn't come through yet.

"(India) is in the middle of a major digital transformation and organizations like Jio have played a big part in getting hundreds of millions of Indian people and small businesses online," Facebook founder CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post.

The messaging service has 40 crore users in India, its biggest market, reaching nearly 80 per cent of smartphone users in the country. The deal will also help the social media giant leverage WhatsApp to partner with Reliance's e-commerce marketplace JioMart, that connects small businesses to customers.

Jio has become the country's largest wireless operator within about three years of its launch, Mumbai-headquartered Reliance has also rapidly expanded its retail business, which now has over 10,000 stores selling groceries, consumer electronics and apparel.

Facebook Shops Feature to Be Launched Across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp

19th May 2020
"e-commerce offerings follows Facebook's launch last year of limited shopping options on Instagram and WhatsApp."

Facebook is launching Shops, a service that will allow businesses to display and sell products on the world's largest social network's platforms, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Tuesday.

The move to build up e-commerce offerings follows Facebook's launch last year of limited shopping options on photo-sharing app Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp. Company leaders wager making the platforms more business-friendly will generate fresh ad revenue, even as user growth slows.

Facebook Shops will tie at least some of those efforts together, enabling businesses to set up a single online store accessible via both Facebook and Instagram. A checkout feature will enable in-app purchases, while a more deeply integrated messaging feature will allow customers to chat with businesses through WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct.

Zuckerberg also said the world's largest social network would be working more closely on product integrations with Shopify and seven other online commerce platforms (BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Channel Advisor, CedCommerce, Cafe24, Tienda Nube, and Feedonomics) going forward.

As with Facebook's other e-commerce features, Shops will be free for businesses to access with the expectation it will boost consumer engagement and ad sales.

"This is the biggest step that we've taken yet to enable commerce across our family of apps," Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said.

The primary focus of Facebook Shops is to make it easy for businesses to have online storefronts to survive during the crisis and ride the online shopping trend into the future, according to Zuckerberg.

Virtual Dressing Rooms

Facebook is also working on free tools including augmented reality to let shoppers see how they will look in outfits, cosmetics or other items for sale, according to Zuckerberg.

"I hope that we can at least help build some of the infrastructures that businesses need not only in this moment but going forward as well," Zuckerberg said.

"Because even when this period and the lockdowns pass... we're going to continue living more of our lives, and doing business, online."

WhatsApp OTP scam found making rounds, here how you can prevent it

23rd October 2021
"WhatsApp has become the latest target of scammers and hackers, who are now using OTP tricks to gain illegal access to accounts."

WhatsApp has become the latest target of scammers and hackers, who are now using OTP tricks to gain illegal access to accounts. The messaging app is widely used across the globe and that makes it more susceptible to privacy issues and scams. A lot of your important data can be derived from your conversation on WhatsApp and that is exactly why the hackers have chosen WhatsApp to collect your sensitive data.

The scam which is currently doing the rounds lets scammers hack into your WhatsApp account using an OTP. You could get a message on WhatsApp from an unknown number or from a friend’s number claiming that he/she is in some sort of emergency. The hacker will then ask you for an OTP, which he will claim that he has sent to your number mistakenly. When you get messages like this, do not indulge in any further conversation or send the OTP code, which actually provides access to your WhatsApp account.

If you send the OTP code to the hacker, you will be locked out of your own WhatsApp account. This would give full control of your account to the hacker. He can then misuse the access and reach out to your other friends following the same tricks. The hacker can also collect sensitive data or conversations that are meant to be private. Similarly, even when you get a message from a known contact asking for an OTP pin, do not respond immediately or follow his request. You can first call him to verify whether the message was sent by him or was his WhatsApp account. It is even better if you do not indulge with any unknown contacts on WhatsApp.

So to keep yourself safe from such scams, you can enable two-factor authentication on WhatsApp. Here is what you can do to secure your account from fraudsters.

— Tap on the three dots on the top right corner after opening WhatsApp.

— Tap on the Settings option and then select Account.

— Then tap on Two-step verification.

— When you select the Two-step verification, you get an enable option.

— When you tap on enable, you will be asked to enter a six-digit pin.

— You will be asked to enter the pin twice, followed by your email address.

— When you confirm the email address, your two-step verification will be activated.
— You could disable or change the pin following the same step.
WhatsApp will ask you to enter your password frequently when you open the app.
