Facebook to soon link your account with news subscription

29th August 2020
"Facebook launched its revamped News tab in the US in June"

Facebook is testing a new feature that will link your account with the news subscription you have paid for so that you can read paywalled articles without hitting the paywall or required to log in again.

The aim is to help news publishers create a better experience for paying subscribers on the social networking platform, reports TechCrunch. According to the company, subscribers who linked their accounts made an average of 111 per cent more article clicks compared to those who weren't part of the test group.

Those subscribers increased their rate of following a publisher from 34 per cent to 97 per cent. When subscribers link their accounts with news publishers, it will show them more content. Some newspapers like the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Athletic and the Winnipeg Free Press in the US are testing the feature.

Calling itself a Fifth Estate, Facebook launched its revamped in the US in June that includes a dedicated local news section among other topics, including breaking news alerts.

Facebook News will soon arrive in the UK, Germany, France, India and Brazil within the next six months to a year, and will pay news publishers to ensure their content is available in the new product.

Facebook has found that over 95 per cent of the traffic Facebook News delivers to publishers "is incremental to the traffic they already get from News Feed". Before a dedicated News tab, Facebook had "Instant Articles" that restricted advertising, subscriptions and the recirculation modules publishers relied on, leading many to abandon the feature.

In 2018, the company decided to prioritise friends and family posts in its News Feed, sidelining news outlets.

Facebook removes false accounts linked to Brazil's Bolsonaro

8th July 2020
"Social media giant Facebook said Wednesday that it has removed dozens of accounts, some used by employees of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and two of his lawmaker sons."

Social media giant Facebook said Wednesday that it has removed dozens of accounts, some used by employees of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and two of his lawmaker sons. The company said its decision was based on the creation of false profiles that engaged in “coordinated inauthentic behavior.”

“We could see that there were employees of these offices engaged,” Nathaniel Gleicher, the company’s head of cybersecurity policy, said in a call with journalists. “We cannot see evidence and we do not see evidence of the politicians … or whether there is systemic coordination and direction from the leadership of those offices or not.”

Gleicher added that some of the content posted by the accounts had already been taken down for community standards violations, including hate speech.

There was no comment from Brazil’s presidential office about Facebook’s action.

Facebook’s decision comes as Brazil’s president careens from crisis to crisis, with different investigations drawing close to him, his family and allies. Bolsonaro has faced growing political isolation since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which has also affected his popularity.

He frequently denounces the media for undermining his administration, and often opts to speak directly to his supporters -- whether on Facebook or in person, as they livestream his comments to their followers.

Brazil’s Supreme Court is investigating a network of Bolsonaro supporters who have targeted justices, politicians and the media. Some of them were jailed in June and early July as the investigations moved forward. The country’s top electoral court is also looking into the accusation that the president’s 2018 campaign has illegally financed the spread of false news online.

Gleicher said in a statement that 73 Facebook and Instagram accounts, 14 pages and one group were removed. About 883,000 accounts followed one or more of the Bolsonaro-linked pages and an additional 917,000 followed one of more of the Instagram accounts that were removed.

“This network consisted of several clusters of connected activity that relied on a combination of duplicate and fake accounts — some of which had been detected and disabled by our automated systems — to evade enforcement, create fictitious personas posing as reporters, post content, and manage pages masquerading as news outlets,” Gleicher said in the statement.

He said the accounts were linked to the Social Liberal Party, which Bolsonaro left last year after winning the 2018 presidential election, and to employees of the president, two of his sons, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro and congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, and two other lawmakers.

Atlantic Council, a research firm used by Facebook, said a third son of the president, Rio de Janeiro city council member Carlos Bolsonaro, is also connected to one of the members of the network.

It said the only operator of the accounts that is directly employed by the presidency is Tercio Arnaud Tomaz, a former staffer of Carlos Bolsonaro in Rio’s city council and a member of the president’s digital team in the 2018 presidential campaign. Tomaz did not reply to a request for comment.

Bolsonaro’s allies have previously been accused by adversaries of running information operations, but this is the first time their staffers have been connected to inauthentic accounts, Atlantic Council said.

“This network steered a significant and longstanding operation, stretching back to at least the 2018 presidential campaign and having amassed an audience of millions, that fused political spin and disinformation with targeted online harassment,” the research firm said.

The Social Liberal Party’s spokesperson Luiz Passos denied any responsibility over the removed accounts. He also said the accounts belong to employees of lawmakers who are at odds with the party and are close to switching to another that is led by staunch supporters of the president.

Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro said in a statement that “it is impossible to evaluate what kind of profile was banned and if the platform crossed or not the limits of censorship.” Lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro did not comment.

Facebook suspended three other networks on Wednesday, including one it attributed Roger Stone, a longtime ally of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Facebook old web design to disappear in September

22nd August 2020
"Facebook's "classic" experience, the interface with the iconic blue navigation bar at the top, is disappearing for good in September."

Facebook's "classic" experience, the interface with the iconic blue navigation bar at the top, is disappearing for good in September.

According to The Verge, Engadget reported that a Facebook support page has been updated and everyone will soon have the new design. Although users can temporarily switch back to the old interface on Facebook's site, the button warns that "the classic Facebook will no longer be available starting in September." The new interface was announced at Facebook's developer conference last year and initially rolled out on the service's iOS and Android apps.

In March, it got a widespread release on desktop, as an opt-in feature, leaving people free to continue using the old design if they want to. However, in September, the old design will disappear.

The Verge reported that the new interface is a big change from what Facebook has used for most of its existence. The new interface is expected to be a lot cleaner and should include a lot more white space, and there's also a dark mode.

Functionally, it also places a bigger focus on the service's Groups features, as well as prominently displaying links to Facebook's Watch, Marketplace, and Gaming sections in its top navigation bar.

PUBG Mobile 1.0 Update Coming September 8, will Major Overhaul

24th August 2020
"PUBG Mobile 1.0 update includes improvements to the UI, characters, environments, and gunplay."

The massively popular battle royale game PUBG Mobile 1.0 update brings a “new era” to the game and will make its way to players on September 8, the developers announced Monday, August 24, through a press release. The 1.0 update brings a host of improvements and changes including new tech, new UX, new gameplay features, and more. Along with the new update, PUBG Mobile also announced the PUBG MOBILE Global Championship (PMGC) esports event with a prize pool of $2 million that will start late in November 2020.

PUBG Mobile will be completely overhauled to offer “the most authentic and immersive experience on mobile,” with the 1.0 update. It brings improvements to the characters, environments both in-game and lobby, and gunfights. The team has worked on particles, smoke muzzle flashes, air blasts, and scope interaction to give it a more realistic feel. Actions such as parachuting, throwing, and sprinting have been optimised as well.

The game is also getting a number of visual and design overhauls, including improvements to the main lobby screen and redesigns of parachuting, sprinting, and other in-game movements. “Particles, smoke, air blasts, muzzle flashes, and the addition of scope interaction make every shot more realistic,” the team says. “Upgrades to lighting systems and texture quality bring the vegetation, sky, and water to life. Models and texture quality are also improved to provide a more realistic feel and high-quality experience.”

Additionally, the models and texture quality, and lighting systems have been improved to add more realism to the sky, water, and vegetation. The UI for PUBG Mobile has been tweaked to make it easy on the eyes, the developers point out. This includes interactions, visuals, motions, and the quality of sound effects. A multi-screen switching mode will be added as well, as an exclusive to PUBG Mobile. Games, community, and purchases have been separated into three spaces for easier navigation.

The 1.0 update is said to improve the gameplay experience on middle and low-end hardware with up to 30 per cent improvement to FPS, and up to 76 per cent reduction in lag. The new technologies have allowed the installation pack to deliver better quality at the same size.

$2 Million Prize Pool PMGC Esports Event

The PMGC Season Zero tournament has also been announced and it will kick off in late November. Sponsored by Qualcomm Technologies, the prize pool is $2 million and players from all regions including America, Europe, Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and China, can participate.

“Due to the global pandemic, an onsite audience may not be possible for PMGC Season Zero, but if it is safe to do so, the league will begin in late November, taking place across multiple studios,” the team says.

Dota 2 The International Prize Pool Record With $34.4 Million and Counting

26th August 2020
"Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) on PC developed by Valve back in 2013."

Dota 2, one of the most popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) PC games, is known for having massive prize pools for its annual The International esports tournament. This year, the tournament has reached a prize pool of $34.4 million and counting. Dota 2 has broken its own record from last year of $34.3 million. While the tournament has been postponed indefinitely and does not have a fixed date yet due to the ongoing pandemic, its prize pool continues to grow.

The International esports tournament is at $34,409,860, which can be seen on its official website.

This prize pool is funded by Dota 2 Battle Pass purchases that start from $9.99 and go up to $44.99 — 25 per cent of all Battle Pass sales go directly to the prize pool of the tournament. This means that as players continue to buy the Battle Pass, the prize pool continues to grow.

This Battle Pass will last till September 19 which means the prize pool will increase even further.

Last year, the prize pool for The International was $34.3 million and it was won by team OG, who were the returning champions from winning the tournament the previous year. They became the first-ever repeat champions of The International.
