Ford Figo with an automatic gearbox was launched in the Indian market on Thursday and has a starting price of INR 7.75 lakh.

Ford Figo Automatic will add to the existing lineup of Figo hatchbacks.

The six-speed torque converter is the major change in the new Figo Automatic. It will be available in the mid-spec Titanium and Titanium Plus trims. The price for the Titanium Plus trim will go up to INR 8.20 lakh.

The gearbox is the same that is used in Ford’s subcompact SUV EcoSport and has been paired with the existing 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with necessary tweaks.

The engine, now mated to the automatic gearbox, will be capable of producing maximum power of 95 bhp and 119 Nm of peak torque. The Figo Automatic will also get a ‘Sports’ mode for a more peppy driving experience. The Figo Automatic promises to return a fuel economy of 16 kmpl (ARAI certified).

As far as the changes in design are concerned, there are few minor tweaks to the new automatic variant of the Figo. The new dual-tone 15-inch alloy wheels on the 2021 Figo Automatic have been redesigned with a more sporty appeal.

As far as other features are concerned, the new Figo Automatic gets 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and remote keyless entry among others. 

Among safety features, the new Figo gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control and hill launch assist.

It will compete with rivals like Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Volkswagen Polo, and Tata Altroz among others.

Ford Motor Company ended 2020 strongly, improving its automotive and credit businesses in the fourth quarter while showing and shipping must-have new vehicles designed to delight customers, expand profitability and sustain free cash flow. “The transformation of Ford is happening and so is our leadership of the EV revolution and development of autonomous driving,” said Ford President and CEO Jim Farley. “We’re now allocating a combined $29 billion in capital and tremendous talent to these two areas, and bringing customers high-volume, connected electric SUVs, commercial vans, and pickup trucks.”

Doubling Down on Connected EVs

Farley said Ford will now invest at least $22 billion in electrification through 2025, nearly twice what the company had previously committed to EVs. He said the company is “all in and will not cede ground to anyone” in developing and delivering connected electric vehicles and services in mainstream areas of strength for Ford: pickups, commercial vans, and SUVs.

“We are accelerating all our plans – breaking constraints, increasing battery capacity, improving costs, and getting more electric vehicles into our product cycle plan,” Farley said. “People are responding to what Ford is doing today, not someday.”

The Mustang Mach-E, he said, is receiving great customer and critical reviews, and will be followed by the first E-Transit commercial van (late 2021) and an all-electric F-150 pickup (mid2022). He added that EVs will be fundamental to the Lincoln luxury brand and the Transit commercial lineup, the latter across a variety of body styles and customized interiors.

Ford’s development and delivery of connected vehicles will be enhanced by a new, six-year partnership with Google announced earlier this week.

As EVs become primary in Ford’s lineup, he said, dedicated manufacturing capacity for them will expand around the world. To date, the company is producing electric vehicles or plans to in Michigan (F-150); Missouri (E-Transit); two plants in Canada (SUVs); and Mexico and China (Mach-E), with others to follow.

Ford India is preparing to expand its product lineup. The company has recently teased the Ford Figo AT on its social media channels and also announced the launch date of the automatic variant of the hatchback.

The new Ford Figo AT will be launched in India on Thursday, 22 July. Apart from that, no other information has been released by the company. It will likely come paired to a 6 speed torque converter unit.

The Figo AT would be a 1.2L 3-cylinder engine that would produce 95 horsepower and 119 Nm of peak torque.

The company is also expected to introduce the AT in the Aspire and Freestyle versions in the future.
