Hyundai AX1 micro-SUV to be called 'Casper'

18th July 2021
"The Hyundai Casper will be launched first in Korea, followed by the Indian market."

Hyundai Motor Company is gearing up to introduce the new AX1 micro-SUV later this year.

As per the international media reports, the company has now trademarked the name 'Casper' for its upcoming car which will go on sale in South Korea followed by other markets including India.

For India, the car might be launched with a different nameplate, details of which will be revealed in the later stage.

The Casper will sit below the existing Venue subcompact SUV as Hyundai's smallest SUV. It will be underpinned by Hyundai's K1 compact car platform that is also found in the cars such as the Grand i10Nios and the Santro.

The car will feature the same 1.2-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine found on the Grand i10 Nios. The same engine produces 83hp and 114Nm on the Grand i10 Nios.

The Casper span 3,595mm in length, 1,595mm in width, and 1,575mm in height. If these numbers are true, the Hyundai Casper will sit slightly shorter and narrower than the existing Santro hatchback that spans 3,610mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,560mm in height.

The trial production of the new Casper has already commenced, while the full production is slated to begin in September 2021.

There is also an electrified version of the car in the lineup that could be debuted sometime in 2023/2024.

Hyundai AX1 to make public debut possibly by early 2022

26th March 2021
"Recently, few spy shots of what is speculated to be the working model of Hyundai AX1 have surfaced online. These spy shots are taken in Korea and India."

Hyundai reportedly has been working on launching their most affordable SUV. For now, the model has been codenamed ‘AX1’.

Though there has been no official statement by Hyundai, it is expected to be the newest addition to Hyundai cars in India.

Recently, few spy shots of what is speculated to be the working model of Hyundai AX1 have surfaced online.

These spy shots are taken in Korea and India.

Although in the pictures the cars are under thick layers, so not a lot is revealed, look wise.

But we can expect the official release within 2021.

We can definitely expect entry-level trim of Ax1 to sport some basic features such as steel rims, fender-mounted turn indicators, roof antenna, etc.

It’s also likely to get LED DRLs, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, automatic climate control, keyless entry, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.

It may come with any of the three engines, i.e. 83 PS 1.2L Kappa petrol engine, 75 PS 1.2L diesel engine, and 100 PS 1.0L turbo-petrol engine.  It might be offered with a 5-speed manual transmission, as well as an optional automatic.

Hyundai AX1 will have to go head-on competition with Maruti Suzuki S Presso, Mahindra KUV100 NXT, Renault Kwid, and Tata HBX which will be available in the market in late 2021.

The price of AX1 can be expected to be INR 4,00,000 to 8,00,000.

Hyundai AX1 micro SUV teased for the first time

6th May 2021
"The all-new Hyundai micro-SUV, codenamed AX1, has been teased ahead of its global debut"

The all-new Hyundai micro-SUV, codenamed AX1, has been teased ahead of its global debut. The teaser shows the SUV's headlamp and tail-lamp designs, but it is unclear whether Hyundai will reveal the final product or a near-production concept.

Images of the Hyundai AX1 teaser

They begin with two teaser images that show the headlamps and taillights of the micro-SUV. The AX1 will follow Hyundai's SUV design language, as evidenced by previous images of the test mule, with split headlamps upfront. The headlamp teaser image shows a circular projector unit set within the bumper. The unit has an LED DRL ring, and the upper portion of the image also provides illumination.

The unit has an LED DRL ring, and the upper portion of the image shows the upper light cluster, which most likely houses the turn indicators.

The tail-lamp image shows a unit with intricate triangular patterning – most likely LED modules. The same can be seen in some spy images of the car's rear that have circulated the internet. Spy photos show that the AX1 will have split light clusters at the rear, with secondary units in the bumper housing the reverse light and indicators.

Hyundai AX1: What We Know So Far Hyundai confirmed the development of a micro-SUV in 2018, with spy shots of test mules circulating on various websites by 2020. The test mules indicate that the AX1 will have the upright proportions of an SUV, with the SUV measuring around 3.7-3.8m, making it smaller than the Hyundai Venue.

While more information is awaited, the AX1 is expected to be built on Hyundai's K1 platform, which also serves as the foundation for the Grand i10 Nios in India. The compact SUV will most likely use Santro's 1.2-litre petrol engine, though lower models may use Santro's 1.1-litre unit to save money.

Hyundai AX1: India launch and competitors

The AX1 is expected to enter series production first in Korea, with trial production already underway. The model will have its world premiere in the coming months and will be available for purchase in Korea by September of this year. The AX1 is expected to arrive in India sometime in the future as a competitor to the upcoming Tata HBX compact SUV, as well as models such as the Mahindra KUV100 and Maruti Ignis.
