Global Smartphone Q3 2019 report

13th April 2022
"The most notable growing brand this year has to be Realme taking the 7th spot in the Q3 shipment result"

Smartphones has become greater parts of our life. We rely so much on smartphones now a days from taking selfies to navigate to our destination. Smartphones has become integral part of our lives. As new technologies are arriving every day people are buying phones more and more. There is something for everyone who wants particular feature in their phones. And research from Counterpoint show that. According to Counterpoint research, Global sales of smartphones in Q3 of 2019 reached 380 million units in shipments, as compared to 379.8 million units in Q3 2018.

Leading the market share in the smartphone industry is Samsung taking 20.6% of the market where as Huawei came in second taking 17.6% of the share. Taking the third place is Apple with 11.8% market share. Top three brands Samsung, Huawei and Apple took almost half of the market share where rest of the hundreds of the brands took half of the market share.

On Huawei’s continued growth Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, said, “The US trade ban on Huawei did not affect the overall brand’s shipments and growth in Q3 2019 after the uncertainties in June. Huawei’s strategy to supplement its decline in overseas market share with domestic push paid off handsomely. The rising sense of nationalism towards Huawei amidst US-China trade war coupled with aggressive go-to-market strategy in China helped Huawei boost mindshare and marketshare domestically. Outside China, the widening gap being created in overseas markets such as Europe, Latin America & Middle East due to the lack of shipping new models with Google services gives a window of opportunity especially Samsung, Xiaomi and others to capture share away.Huawei, though will have to be careful of the inventory levels in domestic market as the market could quickly transition to the upcoming 5G wave which could affect its market share in coming quarters.”

On the other hand, Apple’s decline in shipment by 4% caused the company’s revenue to fall by 11%. But the positive response for the latest iPhone 11 series during the end of the Q3 can bring good results in the Q4 of 2019 for the company.

The most notable growing brand this year has to be Realme taking the 7th spot in the Q3 shipment result. Realme’s shipment in Q3 of 2018 was just 0.3% fast forward a year and shipment has bumped to 2.7% allowing the company to take 7th spot. Not only that Realme also remained in the top 5 brands in India list consecutively for four Quarters. Realme jumped from 14th position in Q1 to 10th postion in Q2 again jumping to 7th position in Q3 of 2019.

Lastly, BBK group which consist of four brands Vivo, OPPP, OnePlus and Realme is close to become the largest smartphone manufacturer group globally. BBK Group accounts for over 20% of the global market share with three of its four brands in top 10 position. Surprising thing about this research is that OnePlus is not in the top 10 list, even though it has become very popular and has good fanbase.
