As part of its developer conference today, Huawei has announced that updated versions of two of its laptops, the MateBook X and MateBook 14, are getting a global release following their launch in China. The MateBook X features a 13-inch 3000 x 2000 resolution display with a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio, support for Wi-Fi 6, and tops out with an Intel 10th-Gen i7-10510U CPU. The MateBook 14, meanwhile, has a 14-inch 1440p display, and its power maxes out with a Ryzen 4800H.

The MateBook X sits just below the flagship MateBook X Pro in Huawei’s laptop lineup. There’s no discreet graphics option like the X Pro, but instead, you’re getting a thin-and-light fanless design with a maximum thickness of 13.6mm, and a weight of just 1kg (a bit over 2 pounds). In terms of connectivity, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack alongside a pair of USB-C ports, either of which can be used to charge the laptop.

Huawei is introducing a new touchpad with the MateBook X. As well as having a larger surface area than its predecessor, Huawei says the “Free Touch” trackpad supports “full haptic feedback,” which makes it sound similar to the Force Touch trackpad Apple introduced to its MacBook lineup back in 2015. The NFC tag to enable Huawei Share is also located under this trackpad. If you want another way to control the laptop, then its 3:2 aspect ratio display is multitouch-enabled.

Rounding out the specs, the MateBook X comes with up to 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. There will also be a version powered by an Intel i5 CPU. There’s a power button with a built-in fingerprint reader, and the laptop has the same recessed webcam hidden under one of the keys on the keyboard that we’ve seen on Huawei’s other laptops — meaning it’s physically blocked when the camera’s off. The MateBook X will be available in silver, green, blue, and pink. Huawei says that the i7 model of the MateBook X will cost €1799, while the i5 model will cost €1599. Both will go on sale in October.

A new version of the MateBook 14 is also seeing a global launch. The big update this year is that the laptop can be maxed out with an AMD Ryzen 4800H CPU with integrated graphics, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Huawei says its 56Wh battery should be able to play 1080p video continuously for 10 hours.

The MateBook 14 is a little thicker than the MateBook X at 15.9mm, heavier at 1.49kg, and although its 3:2 screen is larger at 14-inches and still supports multitouch, its resolution is just 1440p. It’s also only available in gray, Huawei says. The MateBook 14 does provide a bigger selection of ports, including two USB-A ports, HDMI, USB-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The laptop will be available starting in October, starting at €849 for a model with a Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Stepping up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage costs €949. Finally, the model with a Ryzen 7 4800H will come with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage and will cost €1049.

Most of the people, while setting up a gaming PC, tend to prioritize the hardware and fill their computer case with expensive hardware. Besides the hardware, peripherals like keyboards and mouse are given more emphasis even though the average keyboard and mouse will do for most people. Monitors, on the other hand, are most important yet most bypassed part while setting up a gaming PC. What fun will it be if your display won’t have the specs that won’t augment your expensive hardware?

As the display or monitor shows your actions, moves, enemies and your entire game; it should obviously be considered cautiously while setting up a gaming PC. The things that should be considered while buying a Gaming monitor are:

Resolution

Resolution is the most important aspect to look for while buying a gaming monitor. Higher the resolution- higher the number of pixels, clearer the images and superior will be your gaming experience. The gaming monitors come in 3 resolutions- 1080p, 1440p and 2160p. Considering the hardware and GPU limitations 1440p can be regarded as the most suitable resolution for enhancing your gaming experience with inexpensive hardware. But, if you have advanced hardware and GPU, then you can go for 2160p resolution.

Refresh Rate

Refresh rate, simply, is the number of times the image or frame in your screen is refreshed within 1 second. A monitor with 60 Hz refresh rate will be able to refresh the image on the screen up to 60 times per second. Higher the refresh rate, smoother and less choppy images will be formed. Generally, for gaming purpose, the refresh rate should be at least 75Hz for smoother gameplay.

Response Time

Response time is the speed at which a single pixel on the screen can change its color. Lower the response time, better will be the gaming experience. If response time is higher, it will create ‘motion blur’ effect. For gaming, monitor with response time less than 8ms should be considered.

Panel Type

Basically, there are 3 different types of panels each with their own set of strengths and weaknesses- TN, VA and IPS. TN is the cheapest and offers the lowest response time though its visual quality and viewing angles are relatively not so impressive. VA panels offer best viewing angles and have the superior visual quality to TN panels; however, its response time is higher and is a bit pricey. Amongst all, IPS panels are regarded as best panels but most expensive. They have the best visual effects and contrast but have about 4ms response time which is higher than TN panel. If your budget supports, IPS panels are best for consideration or else, TN panels with their lowest response time will also do.

G-sync or Freesync

NVIDIA’s G-Sync and AMD’s Freesync are the technologies that aim to eliminate the screen tearing (a graphics distortion where multiple frames are displayed in a single screen draw that occurs when graphics processor is out of sync with the display). They help your monitor to refresh at a rate that matches your graphics card. However, you cannot use AMD’s Freesync technology with NVIDIA’s graphics card and NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology with AMD’s graphics card. Both technologies are good and you can choose among these relying upon your budget or the video card of your choice.

Honor announced that it's holding an event on September 16 in China and the start of the show would be the gaming-centric notebook - the Honor Hunter. Two new smartwatches will join the event as well.

The gaming laptop has been rumored for a while now, so it will be interesting to see how the company will expand its portfolio of notebooks whereas the smartwatches are going to be new only for China.
