Husqvarna Unveils the E-Pilen Electric Motorcycle Concept

28th April 2021
"Husqvarna presents the E-Pilen concept, Husqvarna's first entirely electric motorcycle"

Husqvarna presents the E-Pilen concept, Husqvarna's first entirely electric motorcycle. Featuring 11 bhp, a riding range of 100 km/charge, and a battery that can be swapped out, the E-Pilen concept is an electric motorcycle that will be available later this year.

The E-Pilen concept is similar to the Svartpilen and Vitpilen motorcycles from the same manufacturer. The E-Pilen is outfitted with wide handlebars, a round headlamp, a small tank, and an exposed trellis frame. The electric battery is actually housed in the fuel tank area.

The E-Pilen will not disappoint in terms of power, performance, and range. According to Husqvarna, the latest E-Pilen would have an electric powertrain with an output of 8 kW. (or 11 BHP). The bike is said to have a range of 100 kilometers on a single charge. Because of the small size of the battery, the E-Pilen is primarily aimed at city riders rather than long-distance cruisers. Husqvarna has not yet revealed the exact specifications of the on-sale battery. Despite the reduced range, there will be no issue because the E-use Pilen's swappable batteries will eliminate the range concern.

E-Pilen electric Husqvarna manufactured in India at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant

2nd September 2020
"The E-Pilen will be Pierer Mobility’s first electric street bike, set to launch in 2021 and will be manufactured in India by Bajaj."

KTM-Husqvarna’s parent company Pierer Mobility has, on a global scale, tried to stay ahead of the curve as far as electric motorcycles go. They have several motorcycles and e-cycles on sale in the global market, although most of them are focused on the off-road space. On the road to electrification, the brand has found shared goals with its partner in India, Bajaj Auto.

According to an investor presentation by Pierer Mobility, both brands are now working towards a new electric vehicle platform as well as a new electric Husqvarna. As part of this joint-operation, the “E-Pilen” will be manufactured in India at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant.

The presentation which gave us our first look at the upcoming E-Pilen says that Husqvarna has set 2022 as the date for a market launch.

While the presentation only gave a low-resolution first look at a sketch of the E-Pilen, it specifies power outputs for the two variants at 4kW and 10kW.

The presentation also talks about modular battery architecture, which indicates that there could be swappable batteries with the E-Pilen.

KTM and Bajaj have already been partnered on a new electric vehicle platform with power figures ranging from 3kW to 10kW using a 48V electric system. A platform that spawned the recently launched Bajaj Chetak electric, and is also likely to be the foundation for an electric KTM scooter set for sale in India in 2021.

The Vitpilen is a café racer-style bike, while the Svartpilen is a scrambler. Both bikes are powered by the same BS6-compliant 248.8 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that does duty in the KTM 250 Duke. The motor produces 29.5 hp at 9,000 rpm and 24 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. A gearbox is a six-speed unit, and both bikes are equipped with a slip and assist clutch.

Both the bikes share their underpinnings with the KTM 250 Duke including the drivetrain. Key highlights include a neo-retro design language, lightweight steel trellis frame, WP suspension with upside-down forks, Bosch Dual Channel ABS system, LED headlight and taillight, and 17” cast-aluminum wheels.

The Svartpilen 250’s dark color with a contrasting fuel tank, white accents, and a silver tail section give the motorcycle a rigorous look as compared to the Vitpilen 250. The Vitpilen 250, on the other hand, gets a white fuel tank with a grey tail section and silver accents.

Suspension duties on the 250 twins are taken care of by upside-down WP fork at the front and a monoshock with adjustable preload at the rear. Both ends offer 142mm of travel. In terms of braking, both the motorcycles get the same brake setup – a 320 mm disc Bybre four-piston caliper on the front wheel and a single-piston caliper on a 230 mm disc on the rear wheel, supported by a dual-channel ABS.

Both the motorcycles only hold 9.5-liters of fuel and the claimed fuel efficiency is 35 kmpl. Ground clearance stands at 145mm and the seat height is a massive 835mm.

The Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 and Vitpilen 250 are both priced at NPR 6,54,900.

The Husqvarna twins will be sold out of KTM Showrooms.
