Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, along with his brother, will take the first space trip from his rocket business Blue Origin on July 20.
A seat is allocated for the winner of an ongoing online auction in addition to Jeff Bezos and his brother. The auction ends on June 12th, with a high price of $2,800,000. Blue Origin revealed in May that its maiden journey aboard its New Shepard rocket, which can take up to six people each mission, would sell off one seat to the highest bidder.
“I've wanted to travel to space since I was five years old. I'll be traveling with my brother on July 20th. My best friend and I embarked on the greatest adventure. “#GradatimFerociter,” Bezos captioned a video on Instagram.
“Seeing the Earth from space affects you. It alters your relationship with the Earth and with people. “There is only one Earth,” Bezos declares in the video. “I want to take this flight because it's something I've always wanted to do. It's a thrilling adventure. It means a lot to me.”
Blue Origin's reusable rocket New Shepard will carry Bezos to the edge of space. According to The Verge, the rocket is topped with a gumdrop-shaped Crew Capsule with space for six passengers inside and big windows. When the rocket reaches the Kármán line, which is 100 kilometers above sea level, the capsule will disengage from the booster, allowing passengers inside to see the curvature of the Earth and feel weightlessness. The launcher and capsule will use parachutes to land in the West Texas desert.
The auction was divided into three phases, the first of which, from May 5 to May 19, permitted individuals to bid any amount on the internet.
After the bids were revealed on May 19, Blue Origin will hold a live auction to choose the winner on June 12. According to the firm, the proceeds from the auction will be donated to Blue Origin's foundation, Club for the Future, which promotes STEM education programs.
Bezos stated last month that he would resign as Chief Executive Officer of Amazon on July 5. In February, Bezos informed his staff of his intentions to step down as CEO in a letter. He will now take over as the company's executive chairman in the third quarter of this year. Andy Jassy, the director of Amazon's cloud division Amazon Web Services (AWS), will take over for Bezos.
