Xiaomi announces worlds first snapdragon 888device- Mi 11

29th December 2020
"The new Mi 11 is believed to be Xiaomis new flagship phone for 2021."

Xiaomi has announced their new flagship phone for 2021: the new Mi 11. The Chinese variant of the phone sports a modified design and upgraded specs that give a good look at the kind of high-end features top Android phones will ship within the coming year, according to AnandTech.

The new phone features a new super-high-end OLED screen that ticks off every checkmark feature that you’d expect from a 2021 design, including 1440p resolution and 120Hz refresh rates, features the new Snapdragon 888 SoC at its heart – as well as comes in a new thinner, lighter, and more stylish industrial design compared to its predecessors. There’s bound to be some changes to the European and global versions of the Mi 11, but for now, this is an early peek into what’s likely to be 2021’s first major Android flagship.

The changes to the design of the Mi 11 in comparison to the Mi 10 appear minor. From the front, the display is slightly larger at 6.81-inches in comparison to the Mi 10’s 6.67-inch screen. That extra space seems to have come from shrinking the bezels of the device (always welcome) while increasing the height and maintaining the curved sides and hole-punch camera on the front.

The 3200x1440 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate on the new OLED display, two features that have fast become must-haves on modern flagships, though of course they’re sadly missed on the latest iPhones. Mi 11 will also feature an under-display fingerprint sensor.

The back of the Mi 11 holds the more visible changes. Other features of the new design include a redesigned camera setup, which transitions from a completely vertical camera arrangement to a new rounded square element with three camera modules. The iPhone X-Esque vertical camera “pill” of the Mi 10 is gone, and in its place is a thin glass “layer cake.” The Mi 11 features three rear cameras: a 108-megapixel main sensor, a five-megapixel telephoto, and a 13 megapixel ultra-wide. The Mi 11 also has faster 50W wireless charging (previously on the Mi 10 Pro) to pair with its 4600mAh battery.

Moving from the battery to the rest of the internals, the Mi 11 is powered by the Snapdragon 888 and offers either 8GB or 12GB of RAM. Storage starts at 128GB or 256GB, which is unfortunately still generous in the smartphone world. Like most new smartphones, the Mi 11 also has Wi-Fi 6 and support for 5G. Notably missing from the Mi 11 is a charger. The CEO of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, confirmed the Mi 11 will follow in Apple and (reportedly) Samsung’s footsteps in removing the charging brick from the box for environmental and cost-saving purposes.

The Chinese version of the Xiaomi Mi 11 is available for pre-order and will start shipping on January 1st. The price for the 8GB RAM/128GB of storage model is listed at ¥3999.00 (around $611). Details on the pricing and features of the other versions of the Mi 11 will come at a later date.

Xiaomi’s Mi 11 will not include a charger in its retail box

27th December 2020
"Xiaomi’s CEO confirmed the decision on social media site Weibo"

Lei Jun, the CEO of Chinese phone maker Xiaomi, has confirmed that its upcoming Mi 11 phone will not come with a charger. Jun cited environmental protection as a reason for the removal of the charger from Mi 11's box and said that he's aware this decision may not go down well with a lot of customers on social media site Weibo.

While that’s a reasonable argument against providing yet another hunk of plastic that resembles all the other chargers people already have, Xiaomi joined other phone makers who jabbed fun at Apple a few months ago for not including chargers with the iPhone 12.

Jun revealed the design of Mi 11's retail box, which is not only thinner compared to other phones' boxes that come with a charger but also has a few features of the Mi 11 written on it: 108MP camera, Super AMOLED screen, HDR10+ certification, and audio tuning by Harman Kardon. Additionally, Jun made the remarks on Chinese social media site Weibo, saying people have many chargers which creates an environmental burden, and therefore the company was canceling the charger for the Mi 11.

Xiaomi tweeted “didn’t leave anything out of the box” for its Mi 10T Pro, adding a short video clip that shows a Mi 10T box with a charger inside shortly after iPhone 12 launched.

Apple’s decision not to include chargers with the iPhone 12 was met with some mockery, and competitors like Samsung reminded customers in an ad that charging bricks were “included with your Galaxy.” That Galaxy ad has apparently been deleted, however, as talks continue to grow that Samsung won’t include a charger with its forthcoming Galaxy S21 phones.
