ZTE announces world’s first phone with an under-display selfie camera

1st September 2020
"The Axon 20 5G turns out to be a fairly mid-range device."

ZTE Corporation, a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, ZTE Axon 20 5G smartphone was launched on 1st September 2020 in China. The phone comes with a 6.92-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080x2460 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20.5:9.ZTE Axon 20 5G comes with 6GB of RAM. The ZTE Axon 20 5G runs Android 10 and is powered by a 4220mAh battery. The ZTE Axon 20 5G supports proprietary fast charging.

The device will be the world's first mass-produced 5G smartphone featuring an under-display camera, marking another milestone in ZTE's exploration of the true full display smartphone.

ZTE has followed through on its promise to launch the world’s first commercial smartphone with a selfie camera embedded in the display. The Axon 20 5G turns out to be a fairly mid-range device.

ZTE says the under-display 32-megapixel camera has been made possible due to the use of “high transparency material that includes new organic and inorganic films” as well as optimized software algorithms to offset the impact on image quality.

The phone is based around a Snapdragon 765G processor, which is likely what allows it to be just 7.98mm thick while including 5G connectivity and a 4,220mAh battery. The screen is a 6.92-inch OLED with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The rear camera array includes a 64-megapixel primary sensor and 8-megapixel ultrawide with 2-megapixel depth and macro sensors. There are options for 6 or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, and there’s a microSD card slot.

ZTE Axon 9 Pro: Flagship specs yet competitively priced

8th September 2018
"Worth the upgrade?"

The ZTE Axon 9 Pro, announced on August at IFA Berlin, brought some major changes to the previous Axon 7’s design and specifications. The phone now sports a 6.21-inch AMOLED display, but with a downgraded display quality of Full-HD+ (1080P), in comparison to the ZTE Axon 7’s Quad-HD (1440P). But the inclusion of an RGB sensor and HDR10 compliant display makes for a well-calibrated screen. Powering the device is the latest Snapdragon 845 System-On-a-Chip (SOC) and an Adreno 630 that handles the graphics. Along with this, the phone has 6GB RAM and a 128GB ROM which is expandable through Micro-SD to up to 512GB.

The device has a large 4000 mAh battery rechargeable though Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 or Qi wireless charging along with an IP68 rating making it dust and water resistant to submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m. The specifications make for a proper flagship device that will cost you about €650 (RS 86,000).

The company has learned from its previous mistake; namely the Axon M which had a fascinating concept but was poorly executed, and hence has refrained from including a few new and experimental features such as the in-display fingerprint and popup camera. However, the company cannot be credited for originality as it follows the design cues of most phones. And of course, it contains the notch, which houses only one 20MP camera. The back has a scratch resistant glass with a fingerprint reader and 2 cameras of 20MP and 12MP. It ships with Android 8.1 Oreo and comes under Google’s Android One; which brings the latest AI-powered innovations and security features.

Huawei, ZTE lose patent appeal at UK Supreme Court

26th August 2020
"Dismissed appeals by Huawei and ZTE"

Britain’s Supreme Court has dismissed two appeals by Chinese telecoms firms Huawei and ZTE over mobile data patent disputes.

The disputes center on the licensing of patented technology considered essential to mobile telecoms. The patents are meant to ensure fair competition and access to technology like 4G.

In the first case, Unwired Planet, an intellectual property company that licenses patents, had brought legal action against Huawei for infringement of five U.K. patents that Unwired acquired from Ericsson.

The second appeal concerned legal action brought by another patent licensing company, Conversant Wireless, against Huawei and ZTE for infringement of four of its U.K. patents.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld lower court rulings on the cases and dismissed appeals by Huawei and ZTE.

In a statement, Conversant said the ruling was a landmark judgment that will have “significant implications worldwide” for telecommunications patent licensing.

The ruling meant that companies like Huawei cannot insist that patent holders like Conversant prove their patents in every jurisdiction of the world, which would be “both practically and economically prohibitive,” the company added.

Samsung new opportunities as pandemic ignites demand for home appliances

1st September 2020
"consumers have been willing to splurge on products that make their homes cleaner."

From sanitizing closets to customizable fridges, the coronavirus pandemic has fanned demand for home appliances - so much so that Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) is adding warehouses and bringing popular products to more markets.

In particular, consumers have been willing to splurge on products that make their homes cleaner.

In Brazil and other emerging economies, households which once relied on maids are now investing in dishwashers and robot vacuum cleaners, while Samsung says its overseas sales of air purifiers jumped more than five times in January-July compared to the same period last year.

Samsung’s AirDresser, a closet that steam cleans clothes and kills bacteria, has seen a spike in sales with British furniture firm Lux Group ordering 1,000 earlier this year. Big fridges have also climbed in popularity as people cooking more often at home seek more freezer space.

“Sales are doing well in all but a few countries,” Lee Jae-Seung, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ digital appliance business, told Reuters in an interview.

He said factories for Samsung’s appliances business in the United States, Mexico, Poland, India and other countries were running at full capacity and the company was seeking more warehouse space in the United States, South Korea and Europe.

“There was a lot of pent-up demand in the U.S and elsewhere,” Lee said. He added that many consumers seemed willing to spend money they might have otherwise used on trips and outdoor activities to upgrade their household interiors.

In its home market, Samsung’s “Bespokerefrigerators drove its fridge sales up 30% in the first half from the same period a year ago. The fridges, which come in a wide range of compartment sizes, panel types and colors that can be mixed and matched, were launched in China and Russia this year and will be sold in northern Europe from October.

Samsung does not disclose home appliance earnings, but according to UBS, it's home appliance business made an operating profit of 337 billion won ($284.48 million) in the April-June quarter, up about 30% from a year earlier according to Seoul-based KTB Securities.
