As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer support Windows 10

14th June 2021
"Support for Windows 10 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations will cease in October 2025, according to Microsoft"

Microsoft has revealed that support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, with a new version of Windows, possibly called Windows 11, expected to be released by the end of the month.

Microsoft has announced the EOL (End of Life) for both the Home and Pro editions of the Windows 10 operating system on its website. As the firm moves forward with its newer OS (operating systems) offerings, it means that the most recent updated version of Windows 10 will no longer be maintained for updates and security.

When a firm ceases updating its operating system, this is referred to as End of Life (EOL), and users are encouraged to migrate to a successor.

Microsoft has not yet officially announced the name of the next edition of the operating system, though they have hinted that it would be called Windows 11. On June 24, Microsoft is organizing a special event where the successor to Windows 10 is expected to be officially announced.

On June 24, 2021, at 8:30 p.m. IST, the event will begin. Microsoft's official Twitter account confirmed the news. Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, revealed at the company's Build 2021 event that the next-generation Windows upgrade will be the most significant in decades.

I've been self-hosting it for a few months now, and I'm really looking forward to the next version of Windows.”

The user interface for Windows 11 is likely to be completely overhauled. Microsoft has reportedly been working on a new app store for Windows in recent months, with rumors circulating that the company will open its store to all apps and payment platforms.

In terms of the Windows 10 retirement, it is expected that the operating system will last longer than 2025, as consumers frequently take a long time to move from one Windows operating system to the next. Microsoft is likely to give people more time to transition to the new operating system.

Microsoft weathers pandemic, beats Wall Street expectations

22nd July 2020
"Microsoft weathers pandemic, beats Wall Street expectations"

Microsoft said the coronavirus pandemic has increased demand for its flagship products, reporting quarterly earnings Wednesday that beat Wall Street expectations.

The software giant said an ongoing trend of working and learning from home has fueled increased demand for its cloud computing services and workplace productivity products, such as email and video conferencing.

But the pandemic has also slowed sales of those products to smaller businesses, and eaten into the advertising revenue that powers its LinkedIn career networking service.

Microsoft on Wednesday reported a fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $11.2 billion, or $1.46 per share, beating Wall Street expectations of $1.34 a share.

It posted revenue of $38 billion in the April-June period, up 13% from last year. Analysts had been looking for revenue of $36.5 billion, according to FactSet.

The company said its commercial cloud business surpassed $50 billion in annual revenue for the first time. But its LinkedIn service was hit by a weak job market and less money being spent on advertising.

LinkedIn announced Tuesday, it is laying off nearly 1,000 employees, approximately 6% of its workforce globally. The job cuts take effect in August and will hit global sales and hiring sections of the company.

The pandemic has made other parts of Microsoft’s business more appealing, including Xbox games and its workplace videoconferencing service known as Teams. One of its rivals, workplace chatting service Slack, filed a complaint against Microsoft on Wednesday in the European Union, accusing the software giant of anti-competitive behavior.

Slack said Wednesday that Microsoft illegally bundles its Microsoft Teams messaging product, which is similar to Slack, into Office 365, its package of email and other widely used business software. Slack says Microsoft forces companies to install it and blocks its removal.

Microsoft has said its competitive advantage over Slack stems from Teams capabilities for connecting people using video. Microsoft said Wednesday that it looks forward to providing the European Commission with more information and answering its questions about the Slack complaint.

Russian hackers targeting U.S. campaigns, Microsoft says

10th September 2020
"Trying to breach computers at more than 200 organizations including political campaigns and their consultants, Microsoft said Thursday."

The same Russian military intelligence outfit that hacked the Democrats in 2016 has renewed vigorous U.S. election-related targeting, trying to breach computers at more than 200 organizations including political campaigns and their consultants, Microsoft said Thursday.

The intrusion attempts reflect a stepped-up effort to infiltrate the U.S. political establishment, the company said. “What we’ve seen is consistent with previous attack patterns that not only target candidates and campaign staffers but also those who they consult on key issues,” Tom Burt, a Microsoft vice president, said in a blog post. The U.K. and European political groups were also probed, he added.

Most of the hacking attempts by Russian, Chinese and Iranian agents were halted by Microsoft security software and the targets notified, he said. The company would not comment on who may have been successfully hacked or the impact.

Although U.S. intelligence officials said last month that the Russians favor President Donald Trump and the Chinese prefer his Democratic challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, Microsoft noted Thursday that Chinese state-backed hackers have targeted “high profile individuals associated with the election,” including people associated with the Biden campaign.

China’s hackers largely gather intelligence for economic and political advantage, while Russia tends to weaponize stolen data to destabilize other governments.

Microsoft did not assess which foreign adversary poses a greater threat to the integrity of the November presidential election. The consensus among cybersecurity experts is that Russian interference is the gravest. Senior Trump administration officials have disputed that, although without offering any evidence.

This is the actor from 2016, potentially conducting business as usual,” said John Hultquist, director of intelligence analysis at the cybersecurity firm FireEye. “We believe that Russian military intelligence continues to pose the greatest threat to the democratic process.”

Graham Brookie, director of digital forensic research at The Atlantic Council, disputes Barr and O’Brien’s claim that China poses a greater threat to this year’s election. His lab is at the forefront of unearthing and publicizing Russian disinformation campaigns.

Brookie confirmed that his employer was among the targets of Hurricane Panda but said there was no evidence the hacking attempts, which he said were unsuccessful, had anything to do with the 2020 election.

“We have every indication that this was an instance of cyber-espionage, information gathering, as opposed to electoral interference,” he said.

By contrast, Brookie said, “it’s pretty evident that the Russian attempts (Microsoft disclosed) were focused on electoral processes and groups working on that.”

Microsoft noted a shift toward greater automation in Fancy Bear methods for trying to steal people’s log-in credentials, which previously largely relied on phishing. In recent months, the group has employed so-called brute-force attacks that barrage an account log in with short rapid bursts of potential passwords. It has also used a different method that makes only intermittent login attempts to avoid detection.

Fancy Bear has also stepped up its use of the Tor anonymizing service to hide its hacking, Microsoft said.

Microsoft and Google Join Forces to Fix Compatibility Issues Across Browsers

25th March 2021
"Microsoft and Google are jointly working together to make things easier for Web developers while building a website."

Chrome Developers tweeted on Monday that Microsoft and Google jointly announced #Compat2021 to resolve major issues faced by Web developers regarding compatibility across browsers. Google listed the five main issues on its Google Developers blog that Web developers face while building a website.

The information for the same was gathered through a Google project called Web Developer Satisfaction, or DevSAT.

The project will also invite the Web developer community to report for bugs or missing items that they encounter.

Microsoft and Google are jointly working together to make things easier for Web developers while building a website. The main issue faced by Web developers is the compatibility of their website across browsers.

The partnership is dubbed #Compat2021 and is aimed at resolving five main issues for browser compatibility issues. These five areas are CSS Flexbox, CSS Grid, position: sticky, aspect-ratio, and CSS transforms. The project is also inviting Web developers to contribute.

CSS Flexbox is a tool that helps developers align images on their webpage. The issue here is with the auto-align function that malfunctions due to which images are incorrectly proportioned across different browsers.

If you're interested in keeping tabs on the update of the developments, it can be done on the Compat 2021 dashboard.
