Microsoft has updated its Windows 11 minimum system requirements to include more Intel CPUs. The minimum system requirements now include additional older Intel CPUs that will be compatible with Windows 11.

Microsoft announced there were a few key minimum requirements for running Windows 11. These include a compatible 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, UEFI secure boot, certain graphics requirements, and TPM 2.0. This caused a bit of a stir as CPUs older than late 2017 was not supported; and to run Windows 11, users would have to upgrade their still fairly capable CPUs.

The new additions to the compatible CPU list include Intel Core X-series and Xeon W-series. Intel Core 7820HQ CPUs are also new to the list but only selected devices running this CPU that shipped with modern drivers based on Declarative, Componentised, Hardware Support Apps (DCH) design principles such as the Surface Studio 2 are compatible.

MacBook users will not be able to install Windows 11 at least officially due to the TPM 2.0 requirement. Apple has never offered support for the TPM 2.0 on its Intel Macs, which makes them all incompatible with the newest version of Windows.

Microsoft announced Windows 11 in June and is currently testing the latest OS in beta. It brings a visual overhaul to the Windows platform along with several deeper changes.

When Microsoft’s Panos Panay took to the stage late last year to introduce the world to the Surface Duo, ‘the holidays 2020’ was announced as the retail launch. For many, including myself, that suggested a fourth quarter appearance for the dual-screened Android-powered device.

Now it looks like we’ll be seeing the revolutionary device in the next few weeks. Let’s look at the clues that are building up towards a surprising release date.

Lets start with the paperwork. The Surface Duo has picked up a number of certifications in the last few weeks, including from the US FCC and variants for Canada and Japan. As well as the regulatory details, you also have Google’s all-important Android Compatibility Test Suite that opens up a number of critically important features:

"Arguably this is a formality for an Android device, but the certification is vital for another part of the Android ecosystem that the public is familiar. Google Mobile Services - which is required to have the Google Play Store (and other associated services such as Youtube) - has ‘Android Compatibility’ as part of its requirements.”

Then there’s the visuals, because we also have new images from the device. The PR materials have leaked via a US carrier - the Surface team may have pushed the line that the Surface Duo is not a phone heavily, but it still has a cellular data connection. Jon Fingas for Engadget:

“Well-known leaker Evan Blass has shared …a batch of renders for the Surface Duo while claiming the dual-screen Android device will launch with AT&T. He didn’t provide release details or pricing, but it’s safe to say that monthly payments could make it easier to justify the unique clamshell device.”

Finally, perhaps the biggest signal comes from long-term Microsoft commentator Paul Thurrott. As well as noting the leaked press material, he also highlighted the briefings that will be taking place in the next week:

"As I noted on Twitter myself, Microsoft MVPs were invited to attend a virtual Surface briefing, presumably for Duo, on August 12."

There’s a lot of information out there, and none of them have a specific date that says ‘The Surface Duo will launch on this date’, but the momentum is building and the moment is close.

Microsoft has revealed that support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, with a new version of Windows, possibly called Windows 11, expected to be released by the end of the month.

Microsoft has announced the EOL (End of Life) for both the Home and Pro editions of the Windows 10 operating system on its website. As the firm moves forward with its newer OS (operating systems) offerings, it means that the most recent updated version of Windows 10 will no longer be maintained for updates and security.

When a firm ceases updating its operating system, this is referred to as End of Life (EOL), and users are encouraged to migrate to a successor.

Microsoft has not yet officially announced the name of the next edition of the operating system, though they have hinted that it would be called Windows 11. On June 24, Microsoft is organizing a special event where the successor to Windows 10 is expected to be officially announced.

On June 24, 2021, at 8:30 p.m. IST, the event will begin. Microsoft's official Twitter account confirmed the news. Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, revealed at the company's Build 2021 event that the next-generation Windows upgrade will be the most significant in decades.

I've been self-hosting it for a few months now, and I'm really looking forward to the next version of Windows.”

The user interface for Windows 11 is likely to be completely overhauled. Microsoft has reportedly been working on a new app store for Windows in recent months, with rumors circulating that the company will open its store to all apps and payment platforms.

In terms of the Windows 10 retirement, it is expected that the operating system will last longer than 2025, as consumers frequently take a long time to move from one Windows operating system to the next. Microsoft is likely to give people more time to transition to the new operating system.
