What happens when you over-exfoliate?
"If your skin has some breakouts or redness, treat them immediately."
Exfoliation is an essential part of skincare as it aids to get rid of any sort of dead skin cells or flakiness. Moreover, exfoliation cleanses your skin deeply digging out the impurities and dirt hidden inside your pores.
As they say, even medicine can be harmful if used unnecessarily- your skin might suffer if you over-exfoliate. It's best to exfoliate once to twice a week but not more than that. If you do, you might suffer from skin burns and many more problems. Let's get to know what happens when you over-exfoliate.
Dry and flaky skin
If you over-exfoliate, your skin becomes more dry, rough, waxy, and flaky. You'll have some rough patches on your skin. At times it may look like your skin has a radiant glow but it's not.
Burning skin, Redness, and inflammation
Your skin gets a burning sensation and starts having rash-like-patches around your skin. It sometimes may even be intolerable.
Breakouts
You'll have breakouts on your skin. Small pimples appear on your skin. Over exfoliation takes away all the moisture and oil from your skin which makes your skin unhealthier and vulnerable.
Increased sensitivity
Your skin will react to almost every product you apply, especially the one with extra chemicals and fragrances. It'll burn even to put on some moisturizer.
What to do?
Once you start facing such problems, it's best to stop exfoliating for the time being. You can resume exfoliating after your skin heals. Here are a few things you must do to heal your skin and prevent further damage.
Stop exfoliating and using retinol products
You'll need to readjust your skincare routine. Eliminate the cleansers that dry out your skin from your routine and avoid both physical and chemical exfoliation for the time being. Also, stop using retinol products as they are harsh on compromised skin.
Switch to a mild cleanser
Avoid all sorts of foam cleansers and switch yourself to mild cleansers. Avoid any skincare product with fragrance. Be more gentle with your skin and do not use any unnecessary products on your skin. Best if you stop using makeup products for a while.
Treat your skin with soothing products
As soon as you notice some red patches or you feel a burning sensation on your skin, apply soothing products like aloe gel, hydrocortisone cream, or Aquaphor. Treat the red and raw areas with soothing products and cold compress as soon as possible.
